Title: Cape question
Post by: Demor Kodiko on Feb 07, 2021, 10:27 AM
Iím looking to do a cape for my mando but am not sure what fabric to use. The pattern I got says wool, but when I go to my fabric stores I donít see wool other than felt.

I am absolutely no expert, so take all this with a grain of salt!

I would have thought a wool cape would be very similar to the material used for the capes in lord of the rings - probably pretty hot and heavy.

I have used an old pair of cheap curtains before to make a (non star wars) cape, and just used some binding to hem the edges. It was.. Okay. You could use a decent curtain fabric to do both sides of the cape, with some interfacing in between to add a bit of bulk?

Wool doesn't have to be hot or heavy. Try looking in the suiting section for more lightweight wool and wool blends.

Really, you can make your cape out of anything, but it does need to have some weight to it so it will drape and flow nicely. Thin cotton, for example, will just look like you're wearing a sad bedsheet.

I like to use upholstery weight fabrics for these. Made a lovely linen Jedi robe that drapes beautifully from this type of fabric.
