Title: Dívash Tracinya Build WIP
Post by: Starling on Feb 07, 2021, 01:54 PM
Hereís my plans, character intro, and all that stuff! http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=199627.msg2197901#msg2197901

Current progress:
(2/7/21) Iíve drawn out my armor plan, tested a pattern for a belt pouch, and have boots to use. I have a plan for my flight suit and flak vest.
Update: turns out the pattern I have is too baggy for a flight suit, and I stink at patterning. Iím going to look for somewhere I can buy scrubs.
Update 2: I have a belt and boots! And I might be returning to the idea of making my own flight suit to avoid accidental inside out sleeves. Iíll need to buy a LOT of stuff for it (material, 1Ē elastic, a new iron, and ironing board, tags so I donít put the pants on backwards...) but itís all stuff Iíd be getting at some point anyways.
(2/19/21) I have patterns for the shirt and pants!

Your concepts look good!

As for what you said in your concept thread about your gloves, it's possible that the gloves you have might work. I've ripped logos off of glove straps before. Show us some pics before you go buy some new gloves.

Scrubs will work well and give you a two piece flight suit. I've used coveralls so far but I'm thinking of switching to two piece, honestly.

Alright, Iíll take some glove photos later. I do use the gloves for riding, so any modifications would need to still be fully functional, which is why Iím considering just getting a pair of plain black gloves.

And a general question: can I do armor on my outer forearm and just a fabric/leather/vinyl wrap on my inner arm, to avoid the insanity that is hinges and sizing a cylinder?
Title: Re: Dívash Tracinya Build WIP
Post by: trashcanmando on Feb 08, 2021, 04:42 PM
In that case, yes, you should probably get gloves specifically for your kit. But if you like that pair, you might be able to just get a second pair.

CRLs state: 'Full or half/bracer-style hard shell gauntlets that cover at least 2/3 of the length of the forearm from wrist to elbow and at least half of the circumference.' and then, 'If half bracers are used, they must display a permanent, in-universe method of securing them to the forearm, such as leather or nylon straps.' So, yes, you should be alright with a plate strapped to the back of your forearm, so long as it covers at least the specified area of your arm and the straps look in universe. But the hinge really isn't so bad- I bought a piano hinge off amazon and glued it to a toilet brush holder, lol. If you want 3D printed gauntlets, the math isn't so hard to do and there are a lot of people willing to help you. I'm not trying to talk you out of a half bracer- but don't feel limited or intimidated.

Since this is my first build, and also doesnít need to be approvable for a few years, I think Iím going to go half bracers. There a good chance Iíd grow out of full gauntlets anyway.

Iím a bit lost with ordering scrubs. Is there a good quality pair someoneís bought from Amazon? Itís hard to tell anything from the photos.

óóóóóóóó-
My plan, as of right now: buy scrubs. Buy or make a neck seal. Buy a custom flak vest from the forums. Depending on cost, maybe get one with fancy upgrades. Make paper or cardboard patterns for all non-torso armor and start testing sizes and shapes. Find a girth belt. Repurpose tail belt for an ammo/gun belt. Buy or make pouches and holsters. Probably buy holsters. Start figuring out how gauntlets will fit.

Personally I would go thrift them. Or walmart sells scrubs. I don't know of any good online places or good brands to buy directly from.

In case I canít find scrubs/a flight suit in the right color, how do I dye it? Is there a kind of fabric I should use? A type of dye? How does dying even work? (Iíve never done it before)
Title: Re: Dívash Tracinya Build WIP
Post by: Aratris on Feb 11, 2021, 10:13 AM
I've used Rit Dye to great effect.
As far as I know, there isn't really a limit to what fabrics you can dye, buy you should probably check their website.
Bassically, you take your fabric or whatever, then dump it into either a washing machine and add dye, or a really hot bucket of water and add dye, and stir the pot. Wait an hour, or a wash cycle, and it comes out. Voila.

Ok, that doesnít seem too hard! Thanks!

Update: I have a belt! Dark brown leather, fits me well + has room, decent quality. Iíll have to find a way to cover the logo on the buckle but I think other than that itís fine. Maybe I can glue/screw/other method of attachment a small piece of sintra onto it? This is also my tail belt when Iím fursuiting so I want it to still be usable for that.

Iím using discord and sta.sh to host my images. I might have to start linking instead of embedding?

Hereís the belt pics again in the meantime https://sta.sh/0l33l7i31e4 and https://sta.sh/21n9enj2h8cz?edit=1

Note to self- add boot pics

Imgur is the reccomended pic hosting site

That belt should do fine. I've filled in logos on metal objects with bondo before, after some paint and weathering you can barely tell.

Aaaaaaaand hereís the boots I plan to use! https://sta.sh/21grns8juemk?edit=1
These are my riding boots, so theyíre nice and weathered already! Iíll have some shin armor and a fabric/leather wrap to cover the zipper and logos.

Stash is being a pain so Iíll go back to using discord tomorrow for images.

Those look good, the zipper should be pretty easy to cover.

Yep, thatís what Iím hoping!

Question: is Amazon an ok place to get sintra? Also can I get away with using a scrub jacket for the shirt of my flight suit?
Title: Re: Dívash Tracinya Build WIP
Post by: trashcanmando on Feb 14, 2021, 10:40 AM
The one time I got sintra I had my alor'ad pick some up for me, but Amazon should be fine. And yes, a scrub jacket should work, it will probably need a few modifications but it should be doable.
Title: Re: Dívash Tracinya Build WIP
Post by: Starling on Feb 14, 2021, 12:36 PM
Ok. Just wanted to check, since Amazon can be... less than good quality sometimes XD
For the jacket, what kind of modifications would be needed? never mind, Iím making my own flight suit! Iíve ordered the shirt pattern and I have the pattern for the pants already. Iíll be making a Joanneís run next weekend, once I know what kind of fabric I need and how much.
Title: Re: Dívash Tracinya Build WIP
Post by: Starling on Feb 16, 2021, 12:56 PM
Plan for this week: (and the next few)
- buy fabric for flight suit
- buy fabric for girth sash, bracer attachment, and boot wraps
- ask about various flak vest styles and the benefits of each (material and quilted vs unquilted, specifically)
- find material for kama
- buy some belt pouches
- figure out the method Iím going to use for prop-making (especially blasters)

Long-term plans:
- figure out what type of helmet (material, finish, etc)
- find a paint brand and start figuring out which colors I want
- order sintra
- get plain black gloves
- make or print or whatever armor templates
- holsters???
- big olí staff weapon (plan)
- big olí staff weapon (make)

Thatís all for now, I think!

How hard would it be to modify gaiters/half chaps to hold armor (as opposed to making my own wraps)?

Bump for my last question, since Iím going fabric shopping today and donít want to buy things if Iím not going to use them!

Edit: ended up not buying fabric today.

Built a mock up chest plate instead! Iíll add the side prong thingies and the ab plate tomorrow. Itís a bit wide, but at least Iím figuring this stuff out now! (https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/806653685840478219/813245236280295444/image0.jpg)

Added a chest diamond to the cardboard mock-up today! Hoping to also do the prongy things and ab plate this afternoon. Making slow but steady progress!
Soft parts update: I have patterns but have not yet gone fabric shopping.

Edit: I have mostly completed the cardboard chest plate v1! (https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/803747866928742400/813898759241990185/image0.jpg)
Sizing is wonky, it relies heavily on tape, and my shirt looks really weird because of it, but I can move! And it looks decent!

Edit 2: did some glue fixes and a bit of trimming so it looks better, but itís not enough to be worth another pic.

Does anyone know what post-imperial backplates look like???

Loving your cardboard mockups!

The backplate question is something Iíll have to look into, tooÖ I found this post (http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=196155.msg2172849#msg2172849) with a few references, but theyíre all covered by capes or jetpacks. I'll be checking out Din Djarin and Armorer builds to see what theyíve done, and keeping an eye out for reference shots during another watch of the show. Does anyone else have more references?
Title: Re: Dívash Tracinya Build WIP
Post by: Starling on Feb 26, 2021, 10:39 PM
Thanks!
Yeah, reference images seem hard to come by, and the CRLs donít say much about back plates. I havenít had time to do a lot of digging, but Iíll post any decent reference images here!

Iím considering doing a full cardboard practice build while Iím waiting on my soft parts? Itíll be good to start figuring out stuff, I think. Backplate aside, I think I can do it! Although the shoulders will be interesting since... cardboard isnít rounded
Title: Re: Dívash Tracinya Build WIP
Post by: Arco'thyel Wyshla on Feb 27, 2021, 10:06 PM
The cardboard sounds like a good idea to get a feel for sizing! Though putting a bunch of darts in the cardboard shoulder should prove to be interestingÖ

Oh, about the backplate! Iíve been looking around and found that Yadsmood put together a great research thread (http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=181623.0) for his Din Djarin build, including an impressive set of V1 and V2 references. There is a screenshot of the beskar backplate in the V2 references under the flightsuit category, and there is a good handful of durasteel backplate screenshots in the V1 references. Also, Rayne did a great build (http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=181960.0) with the Armorer, showing some reference photos as well as the final backplate she made. Good stuff!

Post by: Starling on Feb 27, 2021, 11:05 PM
Hmm... so it looks like any vaguely back-shaped plate thatís the right size works? XD
Iíll probably try going more Armorer-style for my backplate, it looks more comfortable.
Title: Re: Dívash Tracinya Build WIP
Post by: trashcanmando on Feb 28, 2021, 09:40 PM
I'm a huge fan of segmented back plates, but I know they are not approvable with legacy style armor. I assume the same would follow with post-imperial. But they're very comfortable and great for mobility, instead of turning you into a turtle.
Title: Re: Dívash Tracinya Build WIP
Post by: Starling on Mar 01, 2021, 11:11 AM
Being a not-turtle would be great! XD
Iím planning to do a few cardboard back plates for testing, Iíll see how it goes. If I really just canít move, Iíll go segmented backplate for this build since it doesnít actually need to meet the CRLs.

I want to do some cardboard back plates, but the structure is really stumping me. How do I curve cardboard??? Or do I just do a flat cardboard backplate? Do I use multiple pieces to get a bit of shape???
Title: Re: Dívash Tracinya Build WIP
Post by: trashcanmando on Mar 04, 2021, 07:49 PM
The cardboard plates are just a mock up, right? I wouldn't worry so much about having the perfect shape. But yes, if I wanted a really detailed cardboard set, I would go with multiple layers. Sort of like pad stitching in sewing.
Title: Re: Dívash Tracinya Build WIP
Post by: Starling on Mar 05, 2021, 12:32 PM
Ye, this is just a mock-up! Iíve never worked with plastic before (or built armor... or any sort of cosplay) so Iím trying to figure out what Iím doing now. My plan is for the cardboard to be something of a template for the plastic, since itís rigid enough to give a decent idea of how the plastic will work.

I was at a toy store and found some really nice wooden toy guns... when I start on my blasters I think thatís what Iíll use. A few coats of paint, a few greeblies, and itís done!

It hit me last night that I donít know how to do the real chest and backplates. What materials should I use? I think gluing prices of sintra together wonít work as well for the chestplate as it did with cardboard....
Title: Re: Dívash Tracinya Build WIP
Post by: Rhue_Shofytt on Apr 08, 2021, 11:03 AM
If you cut your cardboard pattern along some of the major angles until you can make it lay flat you'll end up with a single piece that you can trace onto your sintra. You should be able to use a heat gun (or your oven if it's set to a low temp) to warm up the plastic and bend it along the lines from the original cardboard pattern to get the shape you're going for. And then use a little bit of bondo to fill in the gaps where the edges didn't quite meet up.

You can also cut separate pieces and use bondo to join them but that's messier and not quite as structurally sound.
Title: Re: Dívash Tracinya Build WIP
Post by: Starling on Apr 08, 2021, 12:55 PM
I didnít even think of that! Do you think it would work to do a ďniceĒ version of the cardboard and the heat the full sheet of sintra, drape it over, let it cool, then trace and cut? I think for the backplate I can maybe just shape one piece to my back so thatís less ďaaaaaaĒ
Title: Re: Dívash Tracinya Build WIP
Post by: Rhue_Shofytt on Apr 08, 2021, 01:21 PM
You could, the only problem you might run into is the cardboard warping out of proper position from the weight of the sintra kinda squishing it down. If you flatten the cardboard out after you've done all your shaping and pattern altering and then put it on top of the sintra, you'll get a pretty good shape since you're just copying the outline you used to get the cardboard shaping onto the sintra.
Title: Re: Dívash Tracinya Build WIP
Post by: Starling on Apr 08, 2021, 02:08 PM
Ok! So if I understand correctly, make a nice cardboard one but keep it flat w/ the correct shapes, then heat the sintra in portions to bend it into the correct shape?

Made progress, finally! I have a cardboard backplate, bracers, and thigh plates! Knees and shins will be some other time. So far itís not too hard to move, so Iím excited to get to work on the real thing this summer!
Edit: Iíll probably be doing knees, shins, and shoulders tomorrow! I should probably also do nice versions but like... Iím gonna outgrow it within a few years and it canít even get approved for a while anyways? Sooo might just have it not be perfect and just run with it. Besides, itís supposed to be crafted by Dívash themself, so itís hand made by someone whoís not an expert. I can play it off as part of the story!

Not sure whatís been taking me so long! The school year is almost over though, and I will hopefully have lot of time to work this summer! Iím hoping that once I start my flight suit, progress will snowball and Iíll order a flak vest (getting it custom made bc Iím lazy XD), get some sintra, pattern my armor pieces, get paint, learn to use said paint, and all the other things. Fingers crossed that thatís what happens!
