Title: Ivven Oyre, femmando (Update Oct 2015)
Post by: RoboEmma on Jul 27, 2010, 10:30 PM
UPDATE 1/30/2018

So, Photobucket is dead. That sure did a number on this forum. This is me trying to start the tedious process of rebuilding my build threads! :D

Here's a few photos of my Ivven Oyre kit. I first debuted Version 1 of this kit back in 2010, and Version 2, which is still pretty true to what it looks like these days, came along back in 2011. She was inspired by a few things. 1) Can I make a kit with pink in it that doesn't read like a "pink kit"? 2) I wanted the colors to come from the OT trilogy palette, namely, black and white for stormtroopers, and khaki/tans for Luke/Tatooine, and 3) I wanted her to look like a gunslinger and for her profession to be a high risk smuggler.

HELMET: MDS-B (size medium)
ARMOR: 18 gauge aluminum. Drafted, dished, and planished by me.
GAUNTLETS: Cups and Sintra.
FLIGHTSUIT: 96% cotton 4% spandex twill. Designed, patterned, and sewn by me.
VEST: Sewn by Shak-ti 4 Him, modified by me.
GEARBELT/HOLSTERS: By lonewolf1183.
EE-1 BLASTER: By Jare Hasan.
Q2 Blasters: Toys, modifed by me.

EDIT: Below is my old thread, broken photobucket links and all. Preserving it as is for now, in case I go through and fix it one day.

UPDATE 6/17/2011

Debuting Ivven v2, with all her many upgrades. Have to say, this is the first time I’ve ever personally liked my own kit, so I’m quite happy with it. I added knees finally and replaced various armor pieces (the helmet included). I’ve replaced most of the soft parts, including the vest, flightsuit (which I heavily modified from purchase), and boots, hoping to give the kit a more natural look while still keeping with the design schedule of the previous one. Real leather gear belt by lonewolf1183. Vest by Shak-ti 4 Him, modified slightly by myself. EE-1 blaster by Jare Hasan. Helmet base by M-DSB.

This suit is made of metal (18 gauge aluminum), hand-hammered and shaped by myself. Gauntlets are currently plastic, though I plan to upgrade to a metal and plastic hybrid.

Upgrades still left to do, hopefully before Dragon*Con:
-get a second blaster (possibly)
-obtain/make holsters
-add collar space to the vest and add a collar plate (ran out of time)
-get new gloves (possibly)
-the new gauntlets are currently made of plastic, but my goal is to upgrade them to a metal/plastic hybrid

These photos are from Animazement, ConCarolinas, and HeroesCon, where v2 was debuted over a two week period. ‘Zeherfoto’ pictures are by Riv.

Hoping to possibly do a more legitimate photoshoot of the costume once the aforementioned upgrades are finished.

UPDATE 9/10/2011

Here’s the inevitable picture drop from this year’s Dragon*Con. Ivven’s had a number of small-but-important upgrades (including adding a collar plate, some paint touch ups/new weathering, and the addition of two Q2 pistols that I modified from the basic toy version)! Thanks to the photographers who took these.

UPDATE 1/2013

Been several months since convention season, but I never posted any pictures. No new updates since last year, but these are some pretty nice shots of the costume, anyways. I figure this summer I'll start work on some upgrades and new interchangeable pieces for this kit.

ORIGINAL POST (7/27/2010):

Ivven Oyre, version 1

This suit is made from metal (aluminum), hand-hammered and shaped by myself. Most of the soft parts were purchased from various places online and then modified. Real leather gear belt by lonewolf1183. Vest by Shak-ti 4 Him, modified slightly by myself. Blaster by Jare Hasan. The helmet is currently a Rubies one piece that I plan on upgrading out of ASAP.

Ivven was debuted at Celebration V.

Planned Upgrades, when time permits:
- Purchase a better helmet ASAP.
- Possibly switch the white half-vest out for a black one, so the plates pop more.
- More foot armor. The plate I had for the upper foot felt fine, but rubbed on the boots. I don’t want to wear a hole through them, so for now, I’m going without.
- Properly paint and weather the gauntlets.
- Knees, when I can figure out how to make some that aren't impeding.

What they said ;D. Spectacular work, as always.

As for knees, you could always just go with simple stylized plates over the front of the knees, rather than the wraparound Fett-style knees. Of course, with knees, shin and boot armor, your thighs will end up looking bare; maybe just a pair of smallish, 'light' thigh plates?

This came together beautifully, and it looks almost exactly like your concept art. :)

I agree that a black vest would be a nice contrast to the the light colour of the chest pieces. Right now they seem to blend in, and the contrast of a darker colour would really show them off.

Have you looked at standard vacuform fett knees with a simple elastic strap on the back?  That's what I wear for knees and have never had any issues with them impeding my movement.  Unless you're looking for something that you can actually kneel on?

I add in another comment for the black vest. When you moved around in some of the pictures, the ab plate would cross over the bottom of the vest. Just looked a bit off. I think the chest plates would also def stand out more.

Otherwise good job! I look forward to seeing it at C5.

If I can throw in my own two cents, I like the thought of a darker vest to pop the plates more- I agree that would be good.  I feel like maybe instead of going to black, you should use a very desaturated color vest, something like a warm brown or a ruddy earth tone.  It would fit in with the sort of 'fall colors' you have with the salmon and beige color.  And it introduces a little bit of subtle color variation to the suit to keep it from becoming too monochromatic.

Oh, wow.  This looks fantastic!  I can only hope that my own armor will end up looking half as good.  This is definitely an example of a great kit, and an awesome femmando kit!  I agree with your idea for a darker vest, though, that'd definitely make the torso plates pop more.

Ooh, I like this idea.  It might end up matching the ammo belt a little more, too, so it's not the only darker brown you've got going on.

Whatever you end up going with, it'll look amazing, I'm sure.  :)

Yeah, I want knees I can actually kneel on, along with not having to constantly readjust them from walking if they're held by elastic. Not having to worry about them falling down is my biggest concern.

I like this idea; I'll certainly toss it around when it comes to choosing to replace the vest.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. :) After seeing this suit at every stage of construction, it's hard for me to see it as a whole. All I see are the flaws, but I suppose that's how everyone feels about their armor. :P

Like the idea you had for the legs. Gives the whole set a heavier look without restricting your movements too much.

Great work. I like the simplicity and clean lines of this kit. You did a great job in the making of all of it and good job by those that built pieces that you acquired for it.

You've put together a geat kit and I agree with the suggestions made above about adding in a darker color vest whether black or some kind of dark accenting color to go along with your overall color scheme.

Yes, we are all our own worst critics and it is nice to hear some feedback from others.

Again, great work and can't wait to see more pics.

Keep up the great work.

YAY!!! I love this kit!! You look AMAZING... ;D And it is true that we are our own worst critique because to me it looks perfect!

i wish i could see it in person... LOL!

But as far as the vest goes, i personally think that it really ties in the color of the armor plates with the rest of kit, but i do agree that if you want them to really pop then either darkening that vest with like a fabric paint (just getting it into the 'grain' of the leather and making it look darker and dirty) or just replacing it... (which if you ever need help with that again just let me know... but whatev... lol  ;) ;D)

Anyway, again, great job and i look forward to seeing more pics!

I feel it lacks the "walked off the set" look.  It looks very well made but aside from the helmet and shape of the armor plates, it doesn't say "Mando" to me.

If you're talking "walked off the set," I think that's where it excels. It's very "Movie Mando" to me, and that's the thing that I like about it. I think if Hollywood were going to make a Mando movie for the masses, this is totally what the female lead(s) would look like. Kudos, Vhe!   ;D

Good looking set, love the color choices and the "chaps" Only suggestion I could come up with is maybe add something bright colored to the thighs, not anything big, just a little something to break up the black a bit.

Clean and simple lines, easily recognizable helmet, customized armor plates that retain the feel of Boba's. Leather ammo belt, decent blaster, good integration into a body suit.

You're right Kantis, it doesn't say "mando"; it frakkin SCREAMS MANDO when I see it.

Love seeing all of this together!  I've been flipping back and forth between these pictures and your concept art, and I think you captured your vision spot on!  The shots of your back look amazing; you have just enough going on aesthetically to look interesting but not so much that it looks too busy.  All in all your lines are very clean.  And I LOVE the blaster.

I don't think you'll need anything on the thighs once you find some knees you like, but that's my personal opinion.  And I can't remember; what material is your vest made of?  Would it be possible to try to "stain" it so that you have a black or brown color but still have some white highlights?  I normally don't like the idea of black and brown together, but when you upgrade a deep brown vest might look amazing.

And, as always, the armor looks stunning.  Your mad skillz are making me ashamed of my lack of progress this summer.  :-[  Well done!   ;D

I have to agree with Kantis and I am going to be brutally honest, this is my opinion and they are not mandates. First of all, the piece looks very good for metal armor and  many areas that I can see must have had some difficulty so congrats on that aspect.
Now here are just a few of the areas where I can see Kantis's point of view:
-Lack of knees
-I think some elbows wouldn't hurt
-The pauldrons look too rigidly placed, loosen them up a bit and help them rest more on your shoulder
-The drastic changes in color. It goes from light to black then back to light to black then back to white, it's very mesmerizing and it's hard to focus on the detail.
-From the back, it looks a little plain. Maybe add a kama or a cape of some sort.
-Bulk up your gauntlets a little more. Girls with big gauntlets that could rip stuff in half are hot.

Yeah, ok. I'm sorry I had my opinion.

I don't mind your opinion, it's just that, "It doesn't look Mando," is pretty much the most unconstructive criticism one can give in this club. :P

But, if the kit isn't your personal cup of tea, just avoid standing next to me when the cameras are around.  :D

I'm usually very critical of kits, especially female kits. This one however I find myself really liking. Great job! Love the kit. You can come troop with us any time.

The only problem I see with this kit is that I thought the Mandos weren't supposed to distract from the Slave Leias at CV, and with her wearing this armor, I think there will be a LOT of distraction going on!  Great job, hope mine turns out half as nice as this one!

kneepads is important for groin kickin
My Broski said he didn't want a cod piece on his armor so I told him I'd make him regret it.
But back on topic, nice kit. I'm loving the colors especially.

The new pics, just continue to show the greatness of a clean build, and again, you did a fantastic job.

Very cool!

One of these days, when I have money and time, I'm going to have to schedule a trip where I travel around to a few different areas and conduct some photo shoots of the kickin' kits that are out there. Love the look of this and would have so much fun doing a shoot with ya.

Keep up the great work.

Still think this is one of the best female kits I've seen in a while. I did notice in the last set of pictures that the belly plate seems like its riding a bit low. If it is you may need to add something "girthy" to fill in the space between the bottom of it and your waist/hips.

Still, absolutely awesome!

This kit looks even better in person, though, yeah, it could use a little more leg armor ;).  I'd say take a couple weeks off of costuming to chill, but we all know you probably won't make it that long before you start fiddling with something or another :P.

And what, pray tell would be wrong with that?

I've said it before and I will say it again: These are FEMmandos, girls, women, etc who wear the 'gam same as guys. Just because they are warriors doesn't mean they can't be girly. The point is to make a kit that shows off the FEMmando aspect so that the ladies here aren't stuck with making their costumes to look like they're dudes with boobs. LOL

That might be the point for some ladies, not all, mind.  There are those on the boards who like surprising people when they take off their helmets, there are those who want obvious femininity, and there are still others who populate the area between the extremes.  No one is "stuck" making anything they don't like!  (otherwise they wouldn't)

Me, I'm more of a grey-area gal, myself.  Finding a happy medium and the like.   :)

Its a welding visor. They are darker so its harder for people to see your face. Frost and I both use welding visors in our kits as well. I works out pretty good I'd guess.

Great work Ivven! You make good stuff and always wear it better.

Dark green welding visors are actually one of the three standard models for mando visors. Essentially people use self-tinted saftey shields, dark green welding visors, and then t-visor.com acetate t-visors.

Blaster by Jare Hasan.

This was a very nice kit to see in person. My one suggestion would be to perhaps add a rope girth belt or some velcro to hold up the leather belt because it was slouching a bit, in turn exposing the top of the cod piece. Not a huge deal but would add more "polish" I suppose. No kit is perfect, I have a few fitting issues of my own that need correcting. ^^;

I actually slouch the belt on purpose; gives me the illusion of a longer torso, lol. It could sit flat and higher up if I wanted it to, because it seals with velcro. I don't seal it the same way every time, so sometimes it slouches more than others and shows a bit of the top of the cod. Honestly, I think the issue may be that my cod piece is sitting a little high; eh, what can you do when you're sewing at 4 a.m. the night before an event. :P I'll probably try to reposition it.

I think the one thing it could really use to finish it off is a holster for the blaster, then it'd be (even more) Gold standard. ;)

I like to think Ivven's heard of washing machines.

LOL, Maybe femmando's dont get that dirty. Or get roughed up in combat  ;D

?

The suit isn't quite as clean looking in person  (the photos tend to naturally 'airbrush' the light weathering away), but I do prefer to keep it on the well-kept side when it comes to soft parts. I figure, in universe, that she'd be washing her suit after work, and if something stained, she'd get it replaced. No reason to look sloppy for employers. It's just my preference to let the soft parts weather naturally with wear.

Anyways. I hope to get started on making a 'medium' alternative to this kit this year, with detachable parts so I can wear it either way. The added soft parts on that one will likely end up being more stained, given the way I see her using that armor spec.

I know you're only giving me a hard time; the cleanliness of the soft parts is a pretty fair thing to point out, anyways. :D I'll probably work on giving it a liiiiittle bit more dirt; not too much, but some.

Not so much dirt, but wear. Slight roughing of edges etc, but still clean. That's what I think anyway.

I think your helmet could benefit from painting the inside black. This shot
(http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af20/em_memory/Ivven%20Oyre%20v2/12.jpg)
shows the need best. I would have said a helmet skirt, but I don't think that'd work with your hair :P
Title: Re: Ivven Oyre v.2, femmando (Update 9/2011)
Post by: RoboEmma on Sep 11, 2011, 12:38 PM
Eh, I really don't see the point of painting the inside of the helmet black? The color of the inside of the helmet really doesn't matter to me, as long as it isn't facilitating for visor show-through, which I haven't had issues with. I'm 5'2", so good luck trying to peer under the helmet, lol. :P As for helmet skirts, they are really unnecessary in my mind. All it does is act as a sauna, and from any other angle ever, you aren't going to be seeing into the bucket. So, that probably isn't in the immediate plans.

Thanks! It's just attached to the black vest with four snaps, in a square pattern. I don't have it attached at the direct top or the direct bottom of the plate, which makes it way more comfortable with having to move my arms. I'd say the snaps don't start until below those in-cuts I have by my arms, and the plate just stays flush to me because I shaped it to do so. It's comfy! I don't even feel it when I wear it.

There is so much I love about your whole set-up, definitely one of my favorites. I have to say, and hoping this doesn't come off as creepy, but your chest plates are just amazing. Your metal craftsmanship is just simply inspiring, something I'm hoping to try my hand at soon.
I have a question on your vest, did Shak-ti 4 Him make it for you as well or is this something you did? I just LOVE it and would like to pick someone's brains about it!  :D ;)

Thank you! Given your pretty obvious talent, I'm sure the beginning processes of learning metal work won't scare you off.  :D It's very rewarding.

While I purchased and heavily modified my flightsuit, the black vest is made by Shak-Ti. I know how to take things in, but I have very little actual sewing construction sense. I had a very specific look in mind for my vest, so I drew up the design for her of what I wanted, and she translated it to fabric beautifully. I took in the sides a bit and added the straps and attachments on the sides once I got it (just doing the refining touches to fit. The attachment method I used included elastic straps and swimsuit hooks), and I also added more fabric to the collar space to make room for a plate there, but she gets all the credit for the actual working product. She is very good, and really awesome to work with!

Whenever I finally get my armor here I may have to try that.  I was going to use velcro, but snaps would be much easier!

And, again, your kit is AMAZING.  I had to educate my students on what a Mandalorian is, and when they wanted to see pictures I showed them a couple of you!

Wow! That is one sweet suit you've got yourself there! My only piece of constructive criticism would be that it needs a bit more dirt (though it may just be the photo's don't show it up well). The scratches you've got going on look good but as white in particular tends to show up dust and other crud I fell it could perhaps benefit from a light black-wash etc in some areas.
Other than that, you have an extremely good looking kit there and should be extremely proud of it!

This piece by Grant Gould (my favorite artist) was commissioned as a gift for me of a bucketless Ivven. Just to give an idea of what I picture the lady under the helmet looking like when she hasn't dyed her hair. ;) She's a near-human mutt, but I figure the human side is mostly Hapan.

Amazing kit! You said the vest is... "Vest by Shak-ti 4 Him" but I can't seem to find a "Shak-ti 4 him". Could you point me in the right direction? I like its style.

It's doubtful she can be found on the forums anymore, as that was several years ago, and I can't give out her personal contact info (she's very private). I have done modifications to the vest since receiving it from her (the side straps/closure method and cap sleeves were my doing), and she originally created it from my design sketches, so the style was my doing. She just helped me out with the making of it back when I was not as proficient of a patternmaker as I am now!

Oh, I didn't know it was that custom. I guess your armor will always be quite unique then.

Yep, they're 18 gauge hammered aluminum. You can find my build thread here: http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=19125.345

I'm a newbie working on my very first kit.  We are working with Sintra, and I'm okay with not having a super feminine kit for my initial build.
Is aluminum better to work with when crafting and shaping the armor, especially the curved and cupped areas on a female breast plate?

Definitely going to check out your build thread.

I'm of the mind that with the right amount of practice and patience, you can achieve any shape with any material. I personally prefer metal because it is a slow and deliberate process that can turn out really beautiful curves, and I find plastic to be finicky and more difficult to do the ergonomic stuff, but I also wouldn't recommend metal as a starting point, unless you're willing to invest several months and $ in practicing. It isn't a quick skill to pick up.

See above post for the "standard" loadout of my kit.

I've been referring to the below version by a couple names; "Western Ivven,"   "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Ivven,"   "Ivven Goes to Tatooine..."

I've lately been working on an idea I've had for a couple years; the concept of "modular" upgrades, or pieces of the kit I can wear some times, but not other times (ala Sabine) and not permanently change my kit. I've always liked my armor being a light set, but I wanted to experiment with some other layouts. I figure Mandalorians have different sets and plates for different occasions, so here's a Dune Sea look.

Pieces I added include: thigh plates, leather strapping to support the thigh plates, shin plates, spats to support the shin plates, and a poncho. I need to rearrange the placement a bit, but I can't get over these on-location photos. :o Went to Vegas this past week and got photos in the sand dunes outside the city.
