Title: I Hate Backpacks - Finally Complete!
Post by: MandalorianEwok on Dec 17, 2010, 10:49 PM
Yeah, bet that got your attention.  It isn't that I hate backpacks its more that I thought they would be too hard or not worth my time as everyone was doing them.  And then Ol McQuarrie got me inspired.  Though my kit will not be an exact replica of the Proto-Fett, it will be heavily inspired.  And, I might add, it should be a fun build.  I've already mapped out in my cranium what I will use for the various pieces.  Of course, your input would be most appreciated.

So, I no longer hate backpacks and am very excited to get this one started.  Where it will be in my process, I don't know, but I'll build up while I can.

Here's my inspiration!

Great mind's think alike , I was thinking about a Weapon pack (Missiles etc) cos i dont like Rocket packs (M.A.J.I.C.) They get you into trouble LOL , I thought along the same lines , multiple missiles and maybe grenades . Ejection grenades for near use etc etc , nice concept ner'vod  ;)

I have that bust  :D  But seriously like you it's inspired me as well to make a "heavy hitter" pack thats gone through several attempts but nothing good enough to even post pics of.  Glad to see someone else likes this design.  ;D

I've spent all my latest free time on my helmet.  Now that it is complete as I can make it until my tint comes in, I'm looking at my next project.  Unfortunately, I'm not sure what one is next.  I see a lot of PVC piping in my future though.  As I think I can make a lot from that.  The weapons rack will be the easiest.  (And by easiest I should say, the least difficult.  That is to say hard but not as hard as the rest.)  :)

I'm sure I could go the sintra (sp) route, but I'm hoping to come across something at a thrift store or Goodwill Superstore that screams "Use me!"  We'll see.  And, I will most definitely keep ya'll posted as I progress.

OK, so here's my shopping list and plan for my back pack.  My exciting new project in my quest for a Mandalorian suit.

First, I give you the plan:

Now, the PVC sizes are approximate and may change as I start the build.  But this is what I have planned to start.  The additions will most likely be sintra strips.  But like everyone knows, plans can and may change.

Secondly, I have plans to make the back pack semi working.  The plan is to incorporate a fan into the back pack and have it blow cool air into the helmet using #1.  Also, if you notice above #8, there is another small box as well as another hose.  (Sorry, didn't have a # added to this one.)  The plan for that one is to have it be the power for the voice box.  That is, if I have one.  But it will open so I can add it at a later date if need be.  Also, if you look at the picture below, you'll see what looks like a speaker box.  If I make the armor similar to the McQuarrie Concept Fett, I may use this as the speaker.

The rest of the back pack will be mainly cosmetic and aesthetic.  Though it is possible I may decide to also incorporate a water bladder into it as well.  (Just thought of that as I was typing this.) :)

So, that's where I'm at.  Still at the planning, but moving ever forward.  Input would be appreciated if someone feels the need.

It's a tiny, tiny piece of input, but I think the bottom horizontal tube should be 3" not 2". It appears to me to be half the width of the piece you said to be 6".

Seems you do have it well thought out for your shopping list.  I can't wait to see what you come up with for the fans to push air into your helmet.  Some others have had that type of concept but I have yet to see anyone actually do it.  I hope it works out for you!  Good luck!!   ;D

That's the kind of input I need.  A second or... many eyes never hurt.

As for pushing the air...  I've got a few ideas rattling, but gonna wait until I have the parts.

Ditto!

Although, I would suggest looking at your plan again. It looks like you have #3 and #5 pointing to the same thing. You probably could do that with the 5in pipe and an end cap. Other than that, it looks like you've got it pretty well in hand.

David.

3's arrow should be pointing to the part between 2 and 5... But I see what you are saying.

Title: Re: I Hate Backpacks

So, I've been doing some research into the backpack.  I've realized, the pack itself makes little sense.  You know, like what are the rockets for?  Do they launch or must you take them out?  Are those missiles on the outside or what?  Then I realized, it just didn't matter because it looked cool.  So, I have my drawing program up and I'm deconstructing the McQuarrie bust and some McQuarrie drawings.  The bust backpack is much larger than the McQuarrie drawing.  So, I've opted to go for something in between.  I've got the PVC pipe for the large "missile" holder.  Its a four inch.  And it has an end cap so I should be good there.  (Pictures will be coming later.)  The other PVC pipe is fairly inexpensive and my brother has some down the street.  My current hang up is the pack base.  I've got some ideas, but after studying the pictures, it is gonna be a bit more difficult.  But that makes the challenge even more fun to attempt.

So, here's my blueprints.  I'm heading out to cut the larger pipe and work on getting the prepped.

(Yeah, I have too much time.  My Paintbrush version is much simpler and easier to study.)

Post by: MandalorianEwok on Feb 02, 2011, 03:27 AM
I got lucky on some PVC pipe I had from several years ago.  So all I need now is the 3/4 or 1" for the "outer rocket" looking things.  Still don't get what that's about.  I've also decided to create my own box out of 6mm and 3mm Sintra using some wood working techniques.  I'm just not finding the kind of base I need.  And, I'm not too keen on fiberglass.  But we'll see.

Would you mind putting them up here?

My biggest hurdle is my own pride and vanity.  I have the McQuarrie bust but haven't had it out of the box.  I just can't bring myself to do so.  I could and then study it....  Oh the agony!

Title: Re: I Hate Backpacks
Post by: MandalorianEwok on Feb 04, 2011, 03:32 AM
My best guess is that it is a missile launch system or a perhaps even a quiver of sorts.  Not really sure.  I don't know if McQuarrie even knew...

What I'm using is 4" pvc.  I happened to have some lying around from a previous home improvement project.  And, I forgot it had an end cap.  Score!  My other option wasn't looking to promising monetarily wise.  It won't like identical, but it will be close.  My next step is to use 3/4" or 1" pvc  for the outside "missile looking things".

Here's the "quiver" as it is now.  It is cut to length and will be adding a sentra cover to it.

Hmm, I guess that works. Now that you mention it, I could have it me a... Ammo storage compartement... and the top will pop off. Back to the drawing board for me. Oh and since I can't upload, here's how I thought about making the main part hold things. Picture it motly as a shield if you will. Then make it so that some way it'll lock into place, and you can easily remove it, and put as many things in there as you'd like.
After I posted it, I realized how hard it would be to come up with a possible object for that "quiver" So in my new sketch, I'm going to remove it totally.. making it more unique.
(My concept, might as well be called a marine pack from swg.)

Sounds good.  I think mine's going to be as close as possible but with my own spin on it.  It is definitely a good inspiration.  Now, had I decided to go with an actual McQuarrie Proto-Fett, then I definitely would.  And who knows, maybe someday I will.

Well, I got it installed and everything... This took me maybe 30 minuits to do... It's just a rough sketch. I used wood as the materials so that people would be able to determine the difference between the cover and the base.

When I finish the new one, I'll be sure to post it up here.
PS: Its a 3-D modeling program... I could make guns.. but probably not armor, due to the curve in it.

Title: Re: I Hate Backpacks
Post by: Bariikas Talgal on Feb 05, 2011, 10:49 PM
And here we go! Here is the one that I've spent my almost entire saturday working on!
Notice the three Tier drill holes. There'll be a mechanism that'll allow me to lock and I can just twist it. Also notice the glass with holes drilled into it. This'll allow the items on the bottom shelf (see below) to stay airated, while the top will be "vacuum" sealed.
Ok, So you've got the tank down at the bottom holding the oxygen or whatever, And then you've got the Top "thing" That will have tubing running from the oxygen pack, into there, and into my helmet
Also, The almost triangular thing at the bottom is to support the pack, keeping it more sturdy then just a plain square.
Ok, in this notice how well they fit together? The whole point of the shield is to cover all of the internal contents.

Hope this'll give you an idea as to how make it hold items! And if you can, lemme know what you think.

I bought my house around 8 years ago.  I bought it "as is".  In doing so, A LOT of junk was left on the property.  Its a nice piece of property and I am very happy in our nearly 100 year old farm house.  Well, as I was walking around looking for scrap metal, I came across this old Craftsman lawnmower.  And when I mean old, I mean....

OLD

Needless to say, I finally found my base for my back pack.  Tell me I'm wrong... YOU CAN'T!  It is exactly what I need.  Just some TLC, sanding, bondo, epoxy and voila my back pack!  Yes, it is still in the beginning, but my plans are finally coming to fruition!

Here's some points of view for reference.

Phase I has begun.  Sorry no pictures of this phase.  It's merely sanding down to make it smooth.  This is going to be a long process.  Using 60 grit to really knock it down.  Will be gradually working up to 250 and then priming.  Will take pictures prior to priming.

Things are working progressively on this build.  I'm really only able to devote about 30 to 45 min a day on this as swing shift doesn't lend itself well to projects like this.  However, I have taken the plunge and did the main cut.  I wasn't sure, but after I did, I was happy.  I've added a couple of the greeblies I was able to scrounge up to give you an idea of the progress.  There will be more of course.  Lots of tubes and such.

Feedback?

What kind of plastic is that originally on the engine part? Make sure you get the right paint for that when you are ready for it. I'd hate to see all this work be ruined by flaky paint. :o

David.
Title: Re: I Hate Backpacks
Post by: MandalorianEwok on Apr 25, 2011, 04:27 PM
I believe it is PVC.  And the first primer coat took pretty well.  I did that to see what needed more sanding to get it past the bumps of the plastic.  I'm confident it'll do very well!

After a side by side comparison to the McQuarrie pack, it looks as though I may need to move the tube over a bit more and make it even with the pack itself.  What do you think?

I probably missed it, but did you flip the design? The large tube on the MQ is on the right side and you have your on the left. But, yes I would agree that it could move over just a little. Not too much though, maybe 1".

David.
Title: Re: I Hate Backpacks
Post by: MandalorianEwok on Apr 25, 2011, 06:18 PM
Yes, the design is flipped.  Basically, their was a crack on the right side and putting the tube their fixed that.  And, since it is only "based" on the McQuarrie, I wanted to keep it different enough.  And yeah, I think an inch would work.  Though it will bring it closer to the round opening.  Which, I do intend to cover.  Though I haven't figured out what yet.  Then again, the way this has been going, I'll probably find it at Goodwill or while cleaning my garage!

As stated, this is still the rough draft.  The chestbox is going to be modded, but only slightly.  My goal is to make one of the buttons turn on a light in the black circle.  Just haven't figured that part out yet.  Been a busy week, not a lot of time for my project.  We'll see what this weekend brings, but I foresee a date with the wife before anything else... :D

I felt exactly the same way!  But when I saw the McQuarrie pack, it kinda changed my mind.  I know this isn't an exact replica of the McQuarrie version, but I'll say it is from the same family of "Utility Packs".  :D

I have a plan to explain the large tube, but not the small ones... As Kel said, greeblies just make things look good.  The large tube itself is going to be a interchangeable barrel holder.  Or quiver if you will.  I have, in the works, a rifle that will take several types of barrels that are mission specific.  And, needing a place to keep them which is readily accessible, I am going to house them in that.  That portion of the pack will be functioning.

Post by: MandalorianEwok on May 04, 2011, 01:36 PM
Dude!!!  Just reading that gave my an apostrophe, like a bolt of lightning struck my brain. (Name the movie that is from!)  Anyway...  Since the e-clip is universal, the utility pack needs to be powered somehow, so... ipso facto, presto chango and other latin sounding words...  I'm going to add a place for the e-clip to go.  Probably wear I have that black ring... since I won't need to cut it.  Well, that's my idea currently.  The pack is an ever changing creature...

Thanks for the inspiration!

*Finishing the quote*

"Cap'n, I think I just had an Apostrophe. . ."
"I think you mean 'Epiphany'. . ."
"Yes. . . it hit me. . . just now. . . like lightning. . . ."
"Oh that must've hurt. . . ."

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Sorry, couldn't help it. ;)

Backpack looks great so far! Looking forward to more pics!

Never be sorry for quoting a movie... it what makes us who we are...

And pics may be a bit slow as once I get into it, I can't stop to take pics.  Maybe I'll have my wife come out and take one of me while I'm working on it.  There's a lot of bondo and sanding right now... and 3 or 4 different things I'm working on for the pack.  Apply bondo here, glue that, sand this... etc...

Thanks for the encouragement!

OK, so minor conundrum.  And I mean very minor as I'm not even close to this part of the build... Anyway... I'm going to be putting letters and numbers on the pack.  So, do I go Mandalorian Font or do I go with Galactic Basic Font.  The pack was made by I'm gonna say Merr-Sonn company as the pack is powered by the Merr-Sonn MA-35 Powercell.

So... Mandalorian Font or Galactic Basic Font?
Title: Re: I Hate Backpacks
Post by: Dar'manda on May 06, 2011, 03:18 PM
Both!

I have some Basic and some Mando'a on my armor.  I figured the Basic is easier to recognize over the Mando'a for most SW fans.  Plus Basic, in my opinion, looks a lot cooler on parts, ships, and speeders.  Mando'a is cool..but reminds me more of ancient runes.
Title: Re: I Hate Backpacks
Post by: Dralkote on May 06, 2011, 03:20 PM
I say just Mando'a but it's your armor.
Title: Re: I Hate Backpacks
Post by: Squirrel on May 06, 2011, 05:16 PM
Take Taglar's advice. Galactic basic is great for widespread fan recognition. Use Mando'a for personal markings on the pack. Basic for the "Tech" info.

Yeah, I think Taglar and you both confirmed my original plan.  It's always nice to get solid input to confirm one's idea.  I think I'm also going to add kill markings or such.  But again, that's in the future.

I just did a test coat of bondo and it seems to hold very well.  I was concerned because the original case was textured and not smooth like I wanted and sanding yielded only minor success.  I hope to have some pics up by the end of the weekend.

To add further to Tag's advice, I'd say anything that's not made by say MandalMotors, and hasn't been repainted, would have Arubesh rather than Mando'a. So if the idea is that it's been bought straight from Merr-Sonn and hasn't been repainted by you, yes, it'd have Arubesh on it, but not Mando'a. I like the idea of then adding kill marks to it, or adding some Mando'a in there somewhere as well.
Title: Re: I Hate Backpacks
Post by: MandalorianEwok on May 07, 2011, 03:33 AM
Here's the basic concept behind the pack.  The pack itself is based on a standard utility pack. The "barrel" quiver was a design concept by Merr-Sonn to go along with the Multi-integrated Armament line of weapons and energy clips.  The idea was sound, but couldn't compete with Sorosuub and Blastech and other such companies.  And, after only a few years, the production line was halted.  Del Duroon found a lot of success with the MA line and has personally modified all his MA line of equipment as well as buying any and all he comes across.  Kind of like the story line that had Boba Fett scrounging up Mandalorian armor for his suit.

So, some of the parts are original, while others are new.  So, I will be painting it to match my armor and also add some personal touches.  Kill marks (as previously mentioned) and perhaps a symbol or two.  Every time I go into my work shop to work on it, I get hit with a new idea.  So, I just hope I can fit everything on it!

Lot of progress!  Got some primer down and some things started on the paint.  Still not 100% sure what the base color will be, but I am leaning toward my primary color of khaki.

Whatcha think?  (There a bit smaller than usual to allow for room.)

I definitely need another coat... Yeah, the white looks good, but up close, as its primer, you can see ALL the problems.  I still need to add straps, paint the buttons and add a few other greeblies.  Not to mention the 3 or 4 barrel attachments in the "quiver".

But thanks for the compliment!

Title: Re: I Hate Backpacks
Post by: MandalorianEwok on May 18, 2011, 01:30 AM
Not sure if you are referring to the silver/grey parts on the pack currently.  But those are actually a combination of silver with bronze over spray.

But, I don't think I'm gonna go with hammered steel as I'd like to keep it smooth.  Then again, it could help to hide some imperfections... hmmmm...

Krylon makes some very good "Hammered Metal" paints. Check those out. They have a darker steel color that's just perfect for raw steel. You can also use it with a paint brush to create "brushed" metal effects.

I applaud you, that has turned out amazing an it isn't even done yet. Honestly, I'd never have believed the base of that was from a push mower if I hadn't seen it for myself. I love to watch builds like this.  8)

Post by: MandalorianEwok on May 19, 2011, 12:26 AM
Well, put several coats of khaki on and have to say, I'm very pleased.  Gonna let it "cook" for a few days while I work on some greeblie attachments, and some barrels for the "quiver" and such, then I'll start to add lettering/numbers and things of that nature.  Eventually, will be adding some LED components, but those will wait a bit.

Well, the finish draws ever closer!  I have but a few more things to paint and attach via glue and then straps.  Then onto the barrel quiver and I am complete.  Lights will come later as I have some spots for them to go.

Sorry I only have two update pics.  My camera ran out of batteries and I was lucky to get these!!

Thanks!  I've still some ways to go, but what you see is, for the most part, what It is going to be.  That hose is going to attach to my helmet, though I've yet to decide the location.  Either back right side, back middle above the grate or on the right front...

Whats the diamiter on the hose? If it's not to big I'd do something like this

I think I'd put the attachment points off center, closer to the earcaps myself.

Have a good one,

This looks absolutely fantastic, man!
As for hose placement, think about how stiff the hose is. If it's too stiff, putting it on the front is gonna limit how far you can turn your head, 'cause the hose will be pulling on your helmet.
So, I'd go for back right side, or back left.

The hose is very flexible.  I agree w/ you though

Well, after a brief hiatus due to potential loss of home owners insurance, I have finally finished my backpack.  After a search and a lucky find I was able to fill in the necessary gaps.  Though I must admit, I'm not 100% complete as I need to add the straps to wear it, but that is semantics.

Here she is!

Here she is with the helmet attached via hose.  I did a test and it works very well.  (At least until my first troop at which point I am sure something will fail!)
