Title: Double Barrel Heavy Pistols WIP
Post by: Larmos Vikarr on Mar 29, 2011, 12:03 AM
I got some advice on what to do with these guns in this thread here:
http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=36291.0

Basically, I got two of these guns a while back in a yard sale for a quarter. Time to put them to good use.

This is the basic cuts I plan on making.

I've taken it apart tonight and this is where I stand currently.

This image shows this guns double trigger feature. I would like to use the bottom trigger to light up the dome on top and the top trigger to light up the barrels.

I have next to no electrical knowledge and would love for some advice on this last part here. Currently the barrels have IR lights in them I believe, as this was a laser tag game gun. I would like to replace those and get the top trigger running into the barrels. The dome might be a bit harder than that though I think. Currently the dome lights go back into the screen's circuit board that is shown above.  I don't need the screen to be functional, it will act as my advanced scope =D. Also, the battery cover that was suppose to go on this has gone missing, it had part of the battery connections on it so I will need an alternative power source. I think a 9 volt, or something that I can just use a single battery for would be best for me. Any help with this, be it what items I need to purchase to get it going to how I should wire it, would be greatly appreciated.

I have removed some buttons and switches, along with their wiring, from the gun that aren't needed. This should make the cover up process a bit easier too. I would maybe like to use these switches to power something else on my suit somewhere, maybe LED's on my helmet or gauntlets? Any ideas for that? Here's an image of what I removed.

The next step will be making the cuts, and then getting my lighting in place so I can put it back together. I might do some sanding of logos and other lettering while I wait to figure out how to do my electronics in this bad boy.

I like where you're going with this. As far as all your electronics go, you could rig some LED's to where you've to the IR bulbs now and connect them to a switch activated by the trigger. As for the "targeting screen", you can dummy a set of crosshairs on it (or whatever) by drawing them onto some acetate or other clear stuff and just stick it on. Or you could get rid of the actual screen and put some blinking lights there activated by a switch, kinda like a "targeting computer".

You could remove the red ball and install a tube for a sight that falls into the rear section.  Possibly replace the screen in the back with a keychain digital picture viewer that has some sight-like information on it.

I love all of those ideas... I'll have to see what I have around to work with. The key chain idea sounds like a great modification, a little unsure as to if it would fit for sure, and how I would go about changing batteries and turning it off and on. I'll look into it though. If not I like the idea of adding a few lights to the panel to make it into the "targeting computer". Thanks guys!

Anyone with experience wiring this type of stuff, should I just remove all the electronics that are in here currently and start from scratch? How would you guys do it?

I'd start fresh. Maybe salvage the longer pieces of wire in case you need them but otherwise ditch most of it.

That's what I thought too. Have any suggestions as to where I can get the type of LED's this project would need? And of course which ones they are. As I have no experience with this type of thing I thought I would try and draw on everyone else's.

Going on the idea of using the photo frame, this is what I've come up with thus far.

http://www.amazon.com/iCoto-DPF-K15A-Digital-Photo-Keychain/dp/B0033DOQ4W/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1301433312&sr=1-5

And here are the measurements on the screen currently

Think this would fit. If it leaves room around the edged thats not a big deal. I would be able to fill that in. Note that the different color orange in these images that surrounds the screen, actually comes off with the screen. But I figure when I pull the screen out of the key chain it will also have a boarder. What do you all think?

Before you make the plunge in getting the photo frame, do you know what you're gonna put on it?

As for the LED's, visit your local Radio Shack, etc... and you'll find all sorts of stuff there. The nice thing is, it's all low voltage so if you get a battery, some gator clips and a few switches and LED's to play with, you can figure out what you wanna do. Generally, you'll probably find LED's that are 3-5 volt, so you can either power them with a few AA or AAA batteries or a 3v button cell battery.

Let the people at the store know what you're doing and maybe they can give you some advice.

I have two buddies that do graphic design stuff. They are both going to work on a few different designs to put into it that are similar to this one. I told them that they didn't have to worry too much about what is in the line of the cross hairs, but if they wanted to put something in make it star wars related, or like a group of people at a con.

As far as updates go I'm sanding down the logos now, I'll post pics later tonight.

I've made my cuts, and sanded off any lettering. Also finished taking it apart entirely. Here's what I have now.

Is there anything else that I should be sanding off? I tried to round all the edges of my cuts as well. I might need to take the dremel tool to a small piece that sand paper isn't making a dent in.
I left more of the handle on than I had pictured, but I think I like it better this way.

The barrels are taken apart currently as I was checking out what all needs to be done to add the LED's. Here is what is inside the barrels.

I think it should be pretty easy to place the LED's in here. The only thing I'm not sure I will know how to do is run them to where the trigger activates it. In my first post it shows the buttons behind the triggers. Anyone have experience with these? If they can be used that would be nice. But if someone has an idea to replace them and still get the triggers to work that would be awesome.

Here's the dome taken apart. I think I will use the dome piece, but replace what the lights are on. Seeing as that board does more then just light up via a trigger, I figure it's not usable.

I think that I will want to drill a hole in the side of the gun so that it can be used to plug the photo frame in to charge. Would that be something that would allow the gun to be acceptable?

Any other ideas for this project?

How does the trigger move? (slide or pivot)  What I'm planning on my pistols is to put a micro switch in a position where the trigger activates it and the LEDs when pulled. It's actually pretty simple to rig up. You could put an LED in each barrel, wire them in series and connect them both to the same power source and switch.

Nice crosshairs. Looks very cool.

Funny thing about the triggers. One slides, the other pivots. The micro switches you mentioned sound to be the same type of thing I have pictured above yeah? Or are they more like the tiny switch in the RF on the Hasbro helmet? I'll have to go into radioshack and talk to someone about this stuff a bit more. Is that really the best place to get the LED's and such? They always seem to be a bit over priced on their stuff to me. Thats just my opinion though.

As for the cross hairs, I cant take credit for them. I found them with a simple google search for star wars scope sight, I believe. I might still use that in my supply with their images if I end up going that way. I'm thinking that the screen might actually come out to be too much work for my first gun. Might use this, or one of their images printed out with a piece of plexiglass over it. We'll see what happens.

That is kinda funny (the triggers). The micro switches I'm talking about look something like this... (http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/1852/te044000.jpg)

If you can figure out where best to mount them so that the trigger pull hits and activates the switch, it's probably one of the easier ways to do this. You don't need to go to Radio Shack. If you've got a store that sells hobby electronics kits, they might have parts. Do some searching and maybe you'll find a better alternative. ;)

As far as sanding, I would recommend at least a high grit sanding all over the gun to prep it for painting later, and to even out the spots you had to sand off stuff.  Other than that, looking good!   ;D

Thanks! I'll give that a go at some point this weekend. I'm also working on my bucket right now so thats taken up a lot of my time =D

You know the shape is starting to remind me of a Flechette Smart Pistol from the RPG book "Galladinium's Fantastic Technology: Guns and Gear for any Occasion".

I can totally see that. Maybe I can find a small magazine to mount to the side.

Awesome job so far!
I was gonna say it looked pretty similar to the Flechette pistol.
Thanks for the picture that'll help me, Woodchuck and the anyone else trying to build it from scratch.

Here is a side view of the Flechette Smart Pistol (this picture shows the other side of the pistol from the first picture).

Hey Larmos, would you be willing to measure that pistol of your's?

Since it looks so similar to the Flechette pistol, it would be a great model.

Yeah I can for sure. You want the barrels on or off for measurement?

On please, and could you not include the giant orange and red pieces on the top of the pistol near the butt of it?

Sorry to take forever on this, I hope these are still usable for you. Not sure how far along you had gotten on the planning of your gun with the Woodchuck.

As for progress on my end, none so far. I'm currently waiting on LEDs to get here in the mail, then I also need to see about getting those switches as I haven't ordered them yet either. Most of my time has been spent on my bucket lately.

Awesome thanks man. ^_^

I'll compare it to the other measurements I have.
I can't wait to see those LEDs working.
You should totally do a vid showing it off.  ;D

Once everything is in place I will =D

I think I need to find something I can rip the 9v battery connection out of for this. I think the 9v would be the easiest thing to hid in the hilt. Figure I'll need to leave the screw holes on the bottom uncovered so that I can change the battery when needed.

Older walkie talkies and baby monitors tend to have the 9V connectors. Try Craigslist, sometimes people just toss them for free.
