Title: Allee's WIP
Post by: Allee on May 25, 2011, 10:44 PM
Ello. I finally got to making a WIP thread. :P So far I have my boots, two piece flightsuit (still need to have it fitted), I'm working on the belt, I have my material for my cape and vest, I have the paint with the color scheme I want, and the plastic sterilite bins. Right now I'm trying to figure out what to do for the chest pieces. I'm only 14, so no boob armor. :P Would it be fine to just cut out the Boba Fett templates and shape them a bit? Something like this:

A lovely (/sarcasm) very blurry picture for all of you where you can't even really see it... I'll try and get a better picture tomorrow. I just quickly cut out a piece of cardboard and shaped it in the basic idea. Hopefully you get the point. :P

Here's the basic plan:

Boots:

Which pair do you think would work better?

Any questions/comments/suggestions are appreciated. :)

Anyone, please correct me if I'm wrong. But I seem to remember a 'no heels' in the CRL's. But platforms are allowed. If I am wrong please let me know.

On a more social note: Now I don't feel so young being only 16 :D

These are basically platform boots. They're certainly not stilettos. Then again, I could be wrong and these might not be acceptable. We'll see, eh?

And yeah, always good to see more young people around. :)

Boots:
Combat/Utility boots are considered the primary accepted boot for armor.

Labels and brand names should be removed or covered.

Shoe-laces MUST be covered with armor or some sort of boot/ankle spat.

High heels/stiletto female boots are not acceptable mandalorian armor attire. Platform boots are acceptable.

That is straight from the Modern Era CRL's, found here... http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?action=ezportal;sa=page;p=14 (http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?action=ezportal;sa=page;p=14)

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure these count as platform boots...

I think they are.... but an App team member would make the final call. If not, you could still use them for now and then get better ones when you are old enough to become official.

Those boots should be fine. Although, if you have any that are a tad lower, that would be better...
And as for the body armor, the template you cut out looks very very small on you, you would want to increase the size by a bit.
For printing out of the boba templates, go for it! Just cuz your female, does not mean that you have to have boob armor, some femmandos like to be easily seen as a girl (Aka, boob armor usually) and some don't, so don't worry about it, just make sure the plates are big enough
BTW, im only 16  ;)

Either of those boots should be fine per CRL's. If you notice Vyri Toldreyn's boots are very similar to yours, heel wise, it's the tapered heals and stiletto style heels that aren't acceptable as stated by Novall himself in her thread.

I'm not sure you'd want to go bigger on the plates, it looks like you have a pretty small torso and once you add the other chest plate, diamond and ab I think you'll be fine at that current size template. If your in doubt, tape the rest out on you and snap another pic.  ;)

Nevermind then. Sorry :p

It's a bit hard to tell with that pic, but it actually looks like your plate is a little too far to the outside, so not only is it not too small, it may actually be just a bit too big, or at least too wide.

As for going with just the standard Fett plates shaped to you, yes, that's absolutely acceptable. It can get  a little tricky to adjust them to fit a feminine form, but it can be and has been done. It's even canon; in the RC novels, Kal Skirata notes that it's not always possible to tell if it's a man or woman under the armor, and Boba's daughter masqueraded as him from quite some time, wearing Spar's armor. One thing you may have to do is make the chest plates slightly longer, though, to account for the length lost by shaping them around your chest. Alternately, you could just do a wider (from top-to-bottom, not side-to-side) than normal collar plate.

On the topic of the boots, those are just fine. As other folks pointed out, it's really only stiletto and other narrow heels that aren't allowed.

And then the colors; I approve ;D. I use Rustoleum's color-shift Galaxy Blue as one of my primary colors, which changes from purple to blue depending on the light, so you won't see me knocking purple armor.

Yeah... The plate is a bit too wide and a little bit short so I'll have to figure out how to adjust the pattern. Thank you for all the advice!

Best advice i could give is , Get all the body plates together on a vest etc and take a better pic . Try for a decent spacing then that will show everyone if they need a trim . Go for it  ;)

Don't we have quite a few lady Mandos in CK? Then, of course, there can never be too many.  :D

Quick update: been a busy weekend, and still have a couple more busy days ahead of me, but I got my sewing machine back in working order so I'll be able to sew my cape and fit my flightsuit. :)

You're welcome; if there's one thing I can be expected to do on here it's give my fifty cents ;). If you hit any snags or have any questions, definitely pipe up and I'm sure I (and plenty of others) will chime in.

It's nice to see another girl around my age into something like this. I only have one thing to add to the rest of the comments. Yes, you're 14, but if you plan on keeping this set for a while and wearing it, I would leave yourself a little bit of room in the chest (if your still growing). I'm 15 and have grown alot since last year, so I know how much your gonna change. But other than that, I look forward to seeing the rest of this!

Another thing you can do to make the chest plates fit your form a bit more nicely would be to round the outside edge, instead of leaving it as that hard, straight line. That will help it to fit your more feminine form, as female chests (with boobs or without) are still not square like a male's, and you still don't have to shape them to be "boob plates" that way (i.e. you can leave them flat). I always try to make the suggestion to feminize chest plates for smaller females, even in as slight a way as rounding the outside edge of the plates, as we tend to look like very diminuative or scrawny men if we don't accent the fact that we are female in some way in armor.

I definitely wouldn't size the plates any larger than you already have; as some people already suggested, I would actually trim MORE off the outside edge (rounded as I suggested, or otherwise). One thing I noticed very early on when I started making armor a few years ago (I was only about 16 at the time) is how very thin female chest plates actually have to be if you're making them for a slighter female form.

As for the boots, either should work. My personal preference is for the shorter brown ones. I feel the shaft of the taller black ones would get in the way of various leg armor.

That's a good idea, thanks! We'll see how it works out because it needs to fit right as well.

Wow talking about 14, 15 and 16 makes me feel like an old man at 17 haha. cool to see some younger people like me interested, especially teen girls, most girls i know are NOT big on Star Wars, *shakes head* they are missing out.

As for what everyone is saying, yea its all great adviced, glad you got your boot thing straigtend out. Im currently on my first armor build and i wish you all the luck. im at the point of trying to make a vest and im a little worried how it turns out haha, hope yours comes out well. As for plate sizing, it did look a little short, just experiment a bit and see what works.

and as many have already said, there is no reason a girl cant where regular plates. and with or without boobs, it can be made to work. just go with what you like best.
 anyway...good luck!

Glued the helmet together, and had my first run-in with bondo. It doesn't like me. xP I will start the sanding tomorrow. Flightsuit fitting, the cape, and the vest are on hold for the time being because my sewing machine is being a pain. :/

Ah the joy of bondo :P. If it hasn't already been said, make sure to sand in a well-ventilated area, and wear a dust mask of some sort.

Surprise thread revive!  :P

Anyway, disregard pretty much all of the previous information. I'll post a more in-depth update tomorrow, but for now here's my belt and ammo pouches. I think I spent an inappropriate amount of time making the pouches... oh well.

The different stages of ammo pouch making. Picture does not include the large amount of caffeine consumed to keep on task with this for almost 8 hours today.

Finally finished. Pretty happy with how these turned out! :D

If these dates are correct, I'd say that's a lot of time spent on pouches! Four years??
They do look good though! :D

Nice belt pouches!  I always like when they're hollow, instead of being formed around a solid block.

And I agree, 4 years on pouches is a little long

Well I had to get them perfect, ya know? I figure if I spend a couple years on each costume part I'll finish the costume by the time I'm 30.

Anyway, I went to an armor party a few weeks ago and basically re-started my project after setting it aside a very long time ago. None of the stuff I'd made so far was really use-able, so I remade the flightsuit, and I have to re-make the vest. Once I sew the new sleeves into my flight suit, I'll post a picture with all my soft parts minus the vest. Here's a couple progress pictures from the last few days!  ;D

My helmet is ready and pretty much all sanded. I just have to get the left ear cap glued/bondo'd.

Pepakura back plate courtesy of Peregrinus. Finished gluing it all together today. The completely unmodified files fit me perfectly, so apparently I have the body of a cartoon character...?  :o

FInishing up the last bits of sanding for my blaster before the paint.
