Title: Mav'runi's (Angela's) WIP - Repairs/upgrades/all of the things
Post by: Mav runi on Oct 07, 2011, 09:28 PM
I originally wanted to make this whole kit myself, from scratch, almost without help. Then I realized that it would be darn near impossible to do that and get official in this year. My boyfriend, Daniel, aka Kiyanu Terras, offered to give me his old plates once he upgraded to Legacy plates. Me being the stubborn noob that I am, I wasn't too fond the idea, thinking I was just going to be a hand-me-down Mando for my first kit.

But as he explained to me, it is a tradition in the Mandalorians for parents to pass on their armor to their children. This made me think very differently about it. So in honor of said tradition, I will be using his old plates, as pictured below :)

The colors are going to be very different, my plan is the profile pic I have for the moment, which is this:

Hard parts, received very graciously :) Soft parts....still need to get. Minus one... I was kindly given a flak vest by Anabel Martinez (Inya Motir) when I went to Star Wars day at Chase Field, wrangling for my boyfriend.
It is lined with a soft yet sturdy fabric and needs no altering to fit me, which is a big deal because I'm on the rather petite side  ;D
(http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr152/_Frangie_/Mandalorian%20Armor/1007011436.jpg)

Now I just need to figure out what to do for the rest of my stuff....oh well, it's a start for now. Any comments, suggestions, or pointing in the right direction will be greatly appreciated! More to come later

Title: Re: Mav'runi's (Angela's) WIP Transgender plates, help?
Post by: Mav runi on Oct 21, 2011, 02:52 PM
So ladies of the Mercs, I have a question for you all. As you see in the pics above, I am using my boyfriend's old plates for my own. The question is, how would you propose I transgender them from regular guy plates to female plates?

Some molding has been done already, although I don't have pics up yet, but it's just basic adjustments for the time being. I only ask because I see that the plate design is quite different between the kinds of plates and not just because of the curves added into them.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Keeping in mind we have many female vode who use traditional plates. most of the more radically curved plates are in attempts to provide comfort. You mentioned that you run to the petite end of the scale. you should not have much of an issue with standard plates.

Sorry in advance if I missed this: but what are those plates made from? (And how much adjustment would they need?)

I am one of those female vode. All I had to do was give them more of a curve and trim a little off the chest and collar plates.

The plates are out of sterilite plastic, I believe. Some shaping has been done to them although i have no pics of it actually on me for example. I do i have some where they are placed on the vest i have, which hopefully fits right.

As you can see, the stomach plate was molded a little more too.

Hopefully I can get more of this done to show some actual progress, thanks for your ongoing help!

Yeah they are sterilite plastic, (walmart bins). In all honesty I don't really like how this turned out on her so I may look into getting her some actual femmando plates.

Wow it's been awhile since I had anything worth posting about!

I finally have my helmet ordered, and it should be here on Wed. the 30th at the earliest. Pics to follow when I get it, and posted in it's proper place.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/410WNqLxakL._SY445_.jpg

Also, there is debate between Kiyanu (Dan my bf) and I concerning whether or not to stay with regular canon plates, or to attempt making Legacy plates for me since they're more form fitting. I haven't seen much in this forum of females doing this, but if anyone has, thoughts, suggestions, or opinions would be greatly appreciated!

More to come later!

i would say run with the legacy kit it seems to be very hot on the boards right now and you might be one of the first girls doing it... so you have my vote on legacy      ;D

Finally got my helmet!!!! I know I need to post this in another section, but I might as well start here.

I know it's a Rubie's 2 piece, but I intend to mod the haran out of it and make it awesome!!!
It's the only solid piece I have for the time being so I'm happy :)

More when it happens......I need to survive Finals first, modding later XD

PS Putting it together was kinda hard, i was worried about breaking the dang thing!

easiest way to build your armor is using the half mannequin torso and drawing out the design then using a dremmel to cut it out. That's how I did mine in a weeks rush.

Yay Rubies 2 piece!  I love my helmet and I tell people with some work, the helmet can be fantastic.  When I show my helmet to some, they are amazed it is a 2 piece. I bondoed the top and sanded that crap out of it so it is crazy smooth.  I filled in the ear gaps so they sit flush.  I bond glassed the inside for added stability, durability and weight.  I have had it for 2 years and even dropped it and it has survived without any issues.

Happy new years!!! I started back to school today (boo, short winter break ><"), but not without some awesome news first.  My amazing boyfriend worked it out with another mando in the area, that in exchange for doing a pepakura helmet build, that he would start working on my armor!!! And it's going to be out of 6mm sintra too!

So I'll be working on that this weekend and whenever I find time between classes and online homework. I'll post pics along the way, which should be very soon :)

So I FINALLY have some progress to report, and finally found time to tell about it!

The pep helmet that my boyfriend did was awesome, and got me a mannequin for my chest and ab plates and the cod piece too. I didn't get pics before he did a lot of the sanding down the pointy bits of the boobs, but here are the afters.

Daniel tried his best to trace them out, although i wish he used pencil first rather than sharpie for the sake of clear lines, but hey it's getting painted later.

And might I also add...mannequins are overly idealistic of the human shape...aka I felt kinda fat after holding that in front of me  >:(
(http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr152/_Frangie_/P1000210.jpg)

So the work is at least traced out for the moment, and the nipple area needs to get fixed. Hopefully I can find a weekend to have a time to work on this stuff at Daniel's house soon. College makes it not easy to find spare time for hobbies of any sort. I will post again when I have more to show! Comments are always welcome :)

Using the half mannequin like that to get the armor shape is a really cool idea.  I'm pretty sure I'll be building a kit for my wife after I finish mine, so I'll be following your build.

Are you going to actually cut the plates from the mannequin or just use it as a base to shape over?

We're going to cut the plates from the mannequin. Though we're scrapping the ab part of it and throwing in the segmented legacy plates.

Yeah, I've seen some designs by others of mixing plate styles and so we figured the Legacy abs would be better...although I'm rather short, i wonder how that will turn out. He's doing a lot of the grunt work...not for long though, I'm going to make sure he's not doing the whole thing  :P

HEY! I finally have some progress to report! no pics yet, but progress nonetheless.

With the help of my amazing bf, I got my boob plates traced and cut out! Still need to fix the holes where the nips got sanded, and over all trimmed (my slight "OCD" kicked in when I realized how off they were in some places). I decided that instead of making them one solid piece like Legacy style, to go ahead and cut them in two like regular plates to allow me room to breathe. Hopefully i can get pics posted tonight or in the coming days when i work on them again :)

If you kept the chest pieces you could have had some cool legacy style plates like Ni'ka.  Her WIP thread is pretty awesome.  You can check it out HERE (http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=36385.0)

She used a mannequin I believe and turned it into some really cool plates

Well, Danny and I talked about it, they only were cut apart because they were just too small on my chest, so we're going to attach them and the chest diamond to a small plate behind it to give me more rib space. Although I am planning to do a small version of the Legacy abs, maybe even shins too. I just haven't had much time to work on them as of late.

Post by: Mav runi on Apr 22, 2012, 09:49 PM
Well whatdya know I have pics i haven't posted yet!!!

I was able to get some major work done on the chest plates, like getting them traced out using a method i saw on the boards:

Then with a little help from the boyfriend, got them cut out. I did most of it, here he's just finishing it up
(http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr152/_Frangie_/Mandalorian%20Armor/0403121542.jpg)

And here they are cut out! He later went back and cut out the marked off parts for the chest diamond
(http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr152/_Frangie_/Mandalorian%20Armor/0403121650b.jpg)

Now for a test fit. The only reason i cut them apart is because the rib size of the mannequin is not realistic in any way so it did not work with me. We're going to attach them to another piece of plastic, maybe sintra, and the chest diamond to make it one solid piece.

Finals are almost over, and with that hopefully more progress will be made!

Yay, progress! (I'm the one who was creepin' on your gaunts :)) Sadly enough... I never would have thought of that method for tracing, or even thought of looking for a method at all. Nice find!
Title: Re: Mav'runi's (Angela's) WIP
Post by: Mav runi on Apr 22, 2012, 11:34 PM
Haha, it's ok. When you find a good source of info, you tend to get the most you can from it. this is certainly the case for my boyfriend XD

Anyhoo, I had seen this method in another femmando's posting, but i don't remember exactly who it was...i don't think i saved the book mark, dang it. But from what i can recalled, she made them too long so she ended up having the boob right in the middle of a long section of body. it looked weird. I had to tape down the pieces and trace with a marker to get it right then see what was uneven and trim some more. I'm slightly meticulous  ;D

AHA Found it!

http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=43700.0

As you can see, the ends seem really long, but it could just be the way the picture is sized. It all depends on your mannequin

Post by: Tassone Phoenix on Apr 23, 2012, 12:27 AM
That is a pretty awesome technique.  I know you said you didn't invent it, but it is smart to try that tracing method out. I know so many people have trouble when making female styled armor.  Very cool.

So Phx Comicon is only two days away and thus my boyfriend and i have made major progress on my armor, sadly with no pics to post at the moment. Thanks Remo, those are almost the exact words my boyfriend told me yesterday  I at the very least want to *try* and get something done. But yes, like a quote from toy story 2 "You can't rush art".

Very true, you can't rush art. But, the last thing you want is to go to a convention and find things falling off or paint rubbing off quicly because it hasn't had time to cure, all because you've rushed. So, just slow down, take your time and get it right. And trust me, there's always another convention ;) .

Yes, we decided yesterday there's no point in rushing. But I will at the very least have my helmet done to display in our Star Wars Neighborhood...mostly so i can try and get it signed by Jeremy Bulloch on sunday  ;D Besides in AZ there are PLENTY of other troops coming this year, this i know. So more pics will come after con when i have something to show.

Wow, has it been that long already? Geez.

Well, I have amazing news. 1) Got to meet Jeremy Bulloch, he's so sweet! He signed my helmet :) I'll put up better pics on my bucket wip.

2) I got the chance to kit up!!! One of Hammer's daughters let me borrow her kit, and OMG it was amazing!!! needless to say I was fangirling the whole time I wore it. It was a good way to practice how to act at events, and motivate me to get my own kit done. I even surprised Danny when he was in line to meet Jeremy! And I got the bucket I was borrowing signed too. win-win!!!

3) FINALLY I have my armor cut out, shaped and primed!!! I got as much as i could out of the lid of the tote, all I needed was the shins from the main bin.
I got way more pieces out of it then shown here, but just to give an idea of space.
There's a small crack in one of the shoulder bells as well as some melt damage I sanded off. I trimmed off about 1/2" off the sides of the shins, cus they seemed too big on my legs.
Next step, colors and strapping/attaching!

I still need to figure that part out, Daniel had the idea of connecting the chestplates with another piece of sintra, but I don't think it'll be necessary. I do have his old chest diamond, but I'll have that somewhere on my belt as a memoir for my persona. I'll see if i can get a good one from either the sterilite or the sintra pieces he has left.

So I have pictures to post, but for some reason Photobucket is not cooperating with me for the time being. I will post them once it decides to work, for now here are the updates!

First, I received my new coveralls in the mail a week ago, tried them on in a geeky joyful frenzy and found they are a bit big...I need to hem the sleeves and legs, but how short should they be?

Second, I have FINALLY started to paint my armor! Some pieces still need to get shaped or remade (stupid shoulder bell broke), but the collar and breastplates are painted the base coat of blue. Then I realized I have to paint the white on next...that will take a few coats to do, then the black. Hopefully I can get the rest of the things painted this week.

I want to be close to official before I go back to school....which is on 8/23...CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

w00t! Awesome work! If you want, take in your flightsuit. I took mine in on the limbs and I am so happy with it. All I did was put on my flightsuit inside out, had my mom pin in where I wanted it, then sewed it and it was done!

I tapered it in from the ends. See my last post on my thread: http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=11127.165

Like I said, turn it inside out, have someone pin it, and then sew. :) On the legs, we pinned the outside seam. On the arms, we pinned the under arm seam. Make sure you leave room to bend your knees and elbows. ;) Oh! Also, use a seam ripper to remove the pockets that you can. That helps too. I removed the back pockets and the chest pockets.

That is genius! Thanks for the pointers :)

Now i need to see if i can do that without having to bother my amazing seamstress sister....we shall see! And yes i will definitely remove the chest pockets, the fewer layers the better

I have pictures!!! Most of my armor is now painted, just need to get knees and shoulders done and I'm one step closer to applying!

(http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr152/_Frangie_/Mandalorian%20Armor/P1010628.jpg)(http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr152/_Frangie_/Mandalorian%20Armor/P1010627.jpg)
For the shins I left that little are of blue on purpose. I might continue on that pattern for the knees. Shoulders, Dan gave me his old ones, I plan to paint all black and with white paint a mythosaur skull on one, the clan logo on the other :)

Hopefully this can all get done soon! Let me know what you think!

Yay armor is painted! I know you are using cups as gaunts and you said knees and shoulders will come next, but don't forget the chest diamond. There clearly is a spot for one and I personally think if you have that cut of armor, then the diamond is needed. Also what are you doing for boots? If those are not lace less, then you might need boot armor to go with the shin armor to cover up the laces. It all depends. You are making great progress. I can't wait until you are finished :)

Oh yeah, can't forget that little piece. Daniel bought some sintra the other day, so I'll get one out of it. Once everything is painted, then comes the task of attaching and weathering...let's hope i can get that done in the next few days.

Wow, has it been that long since i posted anything in here?

Well contrary to my quiet thread, this is the silence before the storm of new progress that will be posted soon!
On my list is to find and assemble buckles and straping for my armor as well as placing and attaching it to the vest after some alterations. I need to alter my flight suit so it's not a bag on me, and work on finding the odds and ends i need too. It's a lot of work, but hopefully I can find enough time to get some of this and all of it done in time to become official *knock on wood* for PHXCC!!!

I'll post when i have something :)

For buckles and straps, I recommend going to Tempe Sales. They have strapping  in like every color, every material, and every width. Their prices and selection for straps/buckles puts JoAnnes to shame. You can buy all sorts of Velcro too.

Nothing more fun than finally getting paint on your plates. :) I would suggest, though, that you clean up the edges. I know its hard with tape to make a curve, but what you can do is use a paint brush! Spray some spray paint into a container (a plastic cup or tupperware) with a tiny bit of water in it--and I mean it when I say tiny bit. Then, using as small a brush as you can manage, touch up the edges of your colors. Paint the blue and black over the white because they are darker and it will be way easier than trying to do it the other way around.

And sorry if you already addressed this, but will you be weathering your armor or going clean?

Keep up the good work, Mav! You are doing great.  :D

Post by: Mav runi on Feb 06, 2013, 08:29 PM
Ordeyn you have just proven a big point! Daniel keeps saying there's no need to hand paint anything on my kit, but me being the somewhat artsy type am stubborn to do some of the details by hand. For now there is already some weathering, merely by accident but yes more will be added. As for my flight suit, i know i probably need to weather the heck out of that thing and make it not look so huge on me.

All i need is time....and being in college means i don't get much of that.
And V thanks for the idea, i'll look up the place :) Danny's also done some looking on ebay and such for cheap finds.

Was on the fence on actually using my mannequin for my chest plates, but now I see you have the same one as I do.  Now I'm back on board!

Yeah, trying to make flat plates into boob plates...good on paper, but not in reality. My only suggestion would be to be careful when sanding down the nipple area, some mannequins are really pointy and thus require a lot of sanding. When daniel worked on mine, he accidently made a hole in one of them, the other was pretty close.

Anyhoo, i have progress to report!!!
I FINALLY got to work on some of my stuff yesterday.
-Flight suit hems = Done
-Helmet = Visor cut out, still has to be mounted, areas on helmet trimmed
-Armor = chest plates touched up, shoulder bell designs painted, weathering on some pieces

Still got a ways to go, but i'm a little bit closer now :) I'll post pics if the ones i took were ok. Hopefully i'll have more to discuss this week!

Finally got some pics to show!!!
 First the bucket

I had Daniel take off some of the point on the visor so it didn't look too much like a beak, and to give me better field of view while wearing it.
I also got to do some hand painting of details on my shoulders and touched up my chestplates some.
Clan Logo on the left one, Mythosaur on the Right
(http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr152/_Frangie_/0312131835b.jpg)
This one ^ was partially sketched directly on the plate, which was the upper half of the skull. The pointier bits at the bottom I free handed.
This one ^ was the first one I worked on....not as pretty as I wanted it or at pretty as the mytho skull, but not bad.
You can barely tell, but i touched up some spots on the lines between the black and white to make it look cleaner, and to do some weathering around the corners and edges.
That's all for the moment! Hopefully i can come across another chunk of time to get some of it mounted soon. Till next time! Let me know what ya'll think :3

I have some progress! Well, it's more like detail work, but it's something!

I bought a pack of paint brushes, not bad for being cheap, thanks to walmart, and did some touch up work on my shoulder designs, mainly the clan logo.
I know it's still kinda fuzzy, but Daniel suggested i leave it alone lest i make it look worse.

But here's something new I thought of...
On the right one, i hand painted my mando name in Mando'a. Yes i know i could have used tape, but i didn't want to risk it coming off when i removed it. After putting the blue down, i went back with white to clean up the edges, and somewhat making a stripe like a name tape on a military uniform. I can always dirty it up later, don't fret.

For the left one, I plan to paint my OM catalog number, and beneath that my OM number for the Dune Sea clan, in Mando'a of course.

Oh and another creative epiphany i had while at wally world, involving the below items...

So i don't have good pics just yet, but let me report my massive progress i got done this last week

Velcro is now on my vest, hand sewing it sucks btw, the rest was with a sewing machine
Helmet now has padding!
Kama is traced out, just needs to get cut/sewn
Chest/belly/shoulders have velcro - though that might change since placing them is being difficult to do
The vest itself i might try to take in from the back since it wasn't made for me and is a bit bigger.

I had a friend get some pics the other day, so i'll post them when he does. either way I"M SO EXCITED :D

I has armor!!!

And before you say anything, the armor itself is not crooked, *I* am crooked. I have a little bit of scoliosis, so that is about as straight as i can stand at times. I was able to get the vest a bit more fitted with the help of Voraktee's girlfriend, and hopefully tomorrow i can get gaunts painted and straps on knees and shins!

let me know what you think :)

looks great... theres one thing that looks a little off to me though  :-\ - the area just above and below the diamond. you might consider making the diamond a little smaller and pushing the chest plates together a little to close the empty space.

Just something to consider. It not, it still looks awesome!

Thanks, i know, my boyfriend hates velcro for the reason of spacing doesn't always line up right. I'll be make some adjustments in the next week or so to make everything look right, or close to it.

Sorry for the lack of up dates, it is now crunch time before con so i've been busy!

Things done so far:
Kama - DONE, by my awesome sister in exchange for ironing
straps for codpiece, shins, knees - pretty much done, just have to test fit everything
Backplate - cut out, possibly primed, will be painting this weekend
Gloves - logo attempted to scrape off, painted over for now
Blasters....still need to get modded and painted.

So at this point i think i've given up on getting official before phoenix comicon since it's next week, but OMG i'm so close i can smell it :D I'll post pics when i get everything together.

I was able to get my backplate on yesterday, as well as find a belt that would work for my pouches. The ones pictured here as well as to holsters are Dan's, just to test fit how the whole kit would look together. I do have a kama there, shown below, i am circled in red, yes i know i am short and my hair is really long.

(http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr152/_Frangie_/a75a3a5c-985f-47e0-b5d8-e0d544a27d21.jpg) (http://s479.photobucket.com/user/_Frangie_/media/a75a3a5c-985f-47e0-b5d8-e0d544a27d21.jpg.html)

The kama was made by my wonderful sister, who also called them "butt flaps" like from george of the jungle, i say they're more like mud flaps XD

With PHXCC tomorrow, hopefully there will be more pics to post! Wish me luck!

Let me know what ya'll think!

I was too lazy to try and just post the pics again, so here is the whole post. I have already been told what things could use adjustment, and  to remind those on the App team who might see this, I have scoliosis, so if i am leaning to one side, it's just me, not the armor. That's the best i can do to stand straight, well at the time, i was tired right after trooping. I will take better pics at another time after i get some work done on the little things.

Title: Re: Mav'runi's (Angela's) WIP
Post by: Mav runi on Jun 08, 2013, 07:00 PM
So now that i have recovered from PCC, here's what i learned:

-Anything with strapping needs to be much tighter than anticipated
-Trying to hold a rifle the proper way is not so easy when boob plates are in the way, and if you normally hold a rifle lefthanded, but the rifle itself is right handed = awkward!
-Running around in kit to collect freebies when you agree to let your handler run around without you, not so easy to do.
-Two piece flightsuit is uber important if you need to use the bathroom....thankfully no accidents happened
-NEED new insoles in boots before next event, and to fix boot armor, kept digging into the toes on my boots.
-Don't take app pics right after trooping unless you take the time to adjust everything.

So needless to say, i still have work to do before i can apply to become official. Hopefully with the next armor party i will have better app pics to show you all :)

-The shoulder tabs on the back plate need to be heated so they sit flush with the body. We should not be able to see those tabs sticking up from the front.
-The bottom of your back plate needs to end above the belts. When it hangs past the belts that means it's too long for your body. It also looks like it may be floating away from the body on the bottom half.

Only other thing I have to add is to try to take your pictures outside in the natural light so we can see everything clearly. The lower body is so dark it's hard to make everything out. ;)

Your almost there. :D

OYA! One shot one kill! Congrats!

It's thanks to you guys :) and Daniel for building the majority of my kit. When i start upgrades later though, i will definitely do more myself. Until then, i get to rest my brain some, get ready for my first troop on sunday, then hit the books to study for grad school tests. yay  :-\

Howdy ladies and gents!

I have not forgotten about this, life has just decided "hey you're done with your mando for now, let's throw all this at you".
I've been studying for my grad school exams for the last month or so and as the date gets closer, the more prone i am to freaking out about it. But with my bucket sitting on my desk or next to me, i can feel her cheering me on  :P

Just wanted to check in here and say as soon as my test is done, which is after august 7th if ya'll will send good vibes my way, much appreciated, THEN i will start thinking of upgrades for my kit.

Thanks for your support!!! *dives back into study books*

So i have emerged from my test books to bring an update: I finally has a voice for my bucket!

What i mean is, i finally ordered and received an Aker voice amp for my mando, so now people can hear me.
(And NO hunter, there is not a chipmunk setting on it...only if you bug me)  :P

And i put the head set on my droid for giggles

I tested it out with my phone music as well as talking to my bro in the next room and i love it already!

Back to work i go!
And thanks ordeyn :)

Wow, it's been too long since i posted anything here. oopsie

Anyhoo, i kicked serious shebs on my tests btw  :P Got to have a little break, then school started *sigh*

So not much has changed with my kit as of yet, but i do have some new little toys to add soon. I'll post pics when i can.
For a carnival i was at, they had squirt guns for prizes (which given to college students is not always a good plan, one freshman got me right in the eye while in kit...i was too tired to be mad at him though)
The squirt guns are just tiny enough to fit into the empty space in my gaunts, i just have to be mindful how my arms are placed or they slide out.

I still have a pair of wooden daggers i painted up that still need a home, and some wrapping on the handles.

I'll post pics when i have them, but if you have any suggestions for how i should have my daggers or tiny pistols mounted, go ahead and drop a line.

Very true, you can't rush art. But, the last thing you want is to go to a convention and find things falling off or paint rubbing off quicly because it hasn't had time to cure, all because you've rushed. So, just slow down, take your time and get it right. And trust me, there's always another convention ;) .

Wise words that will always ring true :) If this man said to do something, it was in your best interest to follow it.

And now with the passing of our brother, i want to find a way to honor him on my armor somehow. I know there is going to be a lot of ideas people will post in the coming days, but i just wanted to post my own little musings here

I want to make something solid that won't rub off or get chipped like a simple paint job. The chest diamond is the center of a mandos armor, and thus the heart. To honor his strong dedicated heart, i want to inscribe his name on maybe a piece of sintra in mando'a. For paint, i might also inscribe a design like he had on his armor and paint it a similar way.

And like he told me, i will take my time and get it right  ;D

I'll post some sketches when i get the chance, hopefully soon. For now, i will reflect as i do my homework.

I finally have updates!!! They've been a long time coming, but i've had to wait because school says NOPE to any extra time i might have.

So I picked up these little beauties from a carnival that i was helping table for at school *btw squirt guns in the hands of freshman college students...never again* ???

I had worn my mando to this event to promote our costuming club, and i found that there is space in my gauntlets for these to hide. Of course they fall out if i have my hands up, but i'll find a way to remedy that later.
The grips are painted to see how well it holds. And i also learned that nail files are not always a good substitute for sand paper.  :-[  ???

My question is, do these need to be modded to be acceptable, if so how much?
Any suggestions for holsters if gauntlet idea doesn't work?

Till next time vode!

Wow, has it really been this long since i posted anything?  :o

I apologize for the necro post, but being out of the armoring loop is not cool!

Anyhoo, school is done for the semester for me and now it's time for fixes and upgrades before PHXCC...i just need to find the space and tools to do so.

For now, here's my list of potential but not too critical things that i need to fix: (Just so i have it for reference)

- Gauntlet- trim up length so it doesn't dig into my elbow, or start building up new ones with the yellow plastic cups as before (if i can find the darn things)

- Boots/armor - shaping to avoid cutting into my boots, ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO PREVENT ARMOR FROM EATING MY SHOES or even repairing my boots?

-Knees - padding needs replaced, straps probably there and on shins

- RIVETS- the ends of the pop-rivets on parts of my armor are not cleaned up and still have the sharp edge to them in the middle (i've sliced my hand on them on a few occasions) Any idea how to go about getting that part out?

- Girth belt/sash - need to find/make a new one that won't bunch up and hide under my ab plate (which needs additional shaping)

-Weapons/holsters - i did get official with a blaster rifle, but it wasn't working for me, now i have nothing to go pewpew at people with. I do have a couple of wooden daggers from the renn fair in AZ i got a couple years ago, but no place to hide them on my kit. I do want to build a verpine at some point....just need to find money to do so.

Geez, i've given myself a lot to do....Any suggestions/hints/tips would be greatly appreciated :)

So my cat decided to be a jerk last night and knock my bucket off of my desk resulting in an earcap falling off and part of the visor becoming detached. It is still structurally ok, but i have no hot glue in which to fix it.

Suggestions?

For things I want glued on, I tend to avoid hot glue and stick with more permanent bonding glues.  I would still put visors in with hot glue, as it makes them slightly easier to replace if needed...but for earcaps and other greeblies, try using plastic epoxy or superglue.  Just remember to remove any paint from the surfaces being glued and rough up the area with something so the glue has something to hold onto.

Ok, i'll have to dig around and see what i have here. should i remove and re attach the other earcap while i'm at it? It's still pretty stable otherwise.

Thank you to all who gave advice on my kit, and who were able to help me in person. Can't wait to meet more of you at Celebration next year :) if i can try to not be broke soon and get my tix

I am well aware that i am necro posting, but it has been a long time since i have had any real reason to do upgrades...UNTIL NOW.

By the grace of whatever higher power was listening i am able to go to SW C7 next month, and i have a LOT to do before then. I had wanted to make a whole new mando that was mulan based, but i will be happy with upgrading what i have.

Updates for my kit:
-Blaster - i finally have a drawable weapon and a holster for said blaster, and another shotgun type weapon that is available for modding
- Plates - I have what i hope is enough sintra to do new chest plates that will hopefully be less pointy than my current ones. i call them my madonna boobs for now.
- Vest - my amazing seamstress sister is offering to make a new flak vest for me that will fit and close a lot better than the one i have. Maybe i can request a neck seal of sorts, we shall have to see.
- Belts/pouches - i have a good belt, i just need to figure out a better pouch system so there isn't so much sliding around. Girth/sash, i just need a new one all together. Kama is still fine, updated the belt so that it is less cumbersome on my hip bones.
- Gauntlets - i want to either buy or make even very simple clamshell gaunts that won't try to dig into my elbow crease and actually stay closed.

Now that i think of this and other ideas in mind, i pretty much am aiming to rebuild my mando entirely. it's been a long time coming, what can i say. Let's see what happens, shall we?

i have updates to report!!!

Monday i talked with my sister about working on my new vest, and she cranked it out in a matter of hours!
She drafted each of the pattern sections, using my old vest as a guide. My old vest wasn't made for me, so the sewing on it made things weird when i wear my armor.
But now I have a vest that looks and feels great!

My sister is Adrienne Gonzales or look for Createable Lady Sewing & Designs to see more of her epic work :)

Now to see about new chest plates....i'll start drafting armor bits later today, we'll see how that goes!

Side note, i know the sewing doesn't look uber symmetrical, but that's because my ribs/back are still a little tilted from my previous spinal surgeries. She did what she had to to make it fit for me  ;D

I know i am necro posting, don't yell at me

Today is my mandos 2nd birthday as i call it :)

I got new plates in time for celebration, but somehow i didn't post anything about it. so i am going to do so now
(https://scontent.fphx1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xtf1/v/t1.0-9/11150869_10204187594586353_1503929334808216170_n.jpg?oh=fafe7fcea7e16c7fecfd049ce59cdfa5&oe=56281023)
Here is the first pic of them at celebration as taken by Ru'dar :)

The collar/chest plates/ab plate are 6ml sintra/expanded pvc board, and with the help of josh dipietro, formerly retired mando, he nudged me along so i designed the plates myself, he cut them, shaped them and helped with painting.

And being at celebration, i was able to be in the massive mando family photo as i call it  ;D I also met with Jeremy Bulloch again at a photo op, and he remembered me from Phoenix Comicon when he was there a few years ago! he said my kit looked great ^^ When i went for his signature, i had to buy the tickets that they wanted so to not make anyone mad. He signed my bucket, and his wife said "she already bought the tickets, get her a picture too" so 2 sigs for the price of one! and i hugged him when we were done.

(https://scontent.fphx1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/v/t1.0-9/11351169_831918350222230_6337158216769991677_n.jpg?oh=8d300ffd76998fff6fa3f1bbbd95de17&oe=562DBAF9)
This was at Phoenix Comicon 2015 during a panel. I upgraded my gauntlets some as well, going for a more conical design than the fins i was sporting before. I still want to trade them out for a better set soon, but of course money any time say NOPE.

There are a few more things but i will post those when i have proper pics :)

Hello Mav'runi
A quick question:  what  did you & your boyfriend find to be the best ways to cut and shape the sterilite plastic panels you used to make your armor?
Please advise, thank you!
Title: Re: Mav'runi's (Angela's) WIP - Repairs/upgrades/all of the things
Post by: Mav runi on Dec 22, 2015, 01:05 AM
Well, we ended up not using those plates, the effort to make them work for my figure just didn't work. Sterilite is better for plates that don't need a whole lot of shaping, but otherwise a heat gun would do well. I would advise against sterilite though because it doesn't hold a curve.

For my newer plates, i have 6mm sintra aka expanded pvc board and it works quite nicely. Gives a bulky armored look without a lot of weight.

and on a personal thing, him and i aren't dating anymore. just for future reference

-Mav'runi

FABULOUS SUIT OF ARMOR!
Is that a saguaro cactus worked into the Mandalorian graphic on one of your plates there?  Ingenious!!

it kinda works really well for the overall environment that one would think of when you hear Arizona. aka America's sandbox  as i call it.

I'll hopefully get some new pics that i can use for a proper trading card this coming weekend. I will post when they get to me!
