Title: If You Build Him, Novoc Will Come... HUGE UPDATE 1/7/19!!
Post by: Novoc Mereel on Nov 16, 2011, 09:49 PM
Well, vode, here I am.  I've got my first rough concept sketch more or less finished.  My character, Novoc Mereel, is an expert Mandalorian sniper.  I've started a scratchbuild WoF helmet from posterboard, and have begun planning out a paint scheme.  Here's my first full-body concept art!

As you can see, I borrowed heavily from Thaxos's Legacy Era chest armor.  I did ask him permission via Facebook to base some of my kit on his, and he agreed.  If needed, I can modify the design so that nobody feels like my kit is a knock-off.   ;D  Features I wanted feedback on include:

- The kama--I decided that, instead of thigh armor with a kama around the waist, I borrowed a concept I saw on the completed kit thread and decided to make one harness belt that would have my cod piece and some basic, shaped thigh armor attached directly to the kama, for ease of use.  Being a sniper, flexibility will be a key component of this kit, as a sniper must always have high mobility to quickly change locations.  I am planning on somehow affixing the holster for my sidearm to the right piece of thigh armor, possibly integrating it directly into my armor, and attaching a strap across the top to hold the weapon in place.

- The knees/shins--Playing into the idea of high mobility/flexibility, I wanted to give a more simplistic (read: inexpensive... I AM a college kid, after all...  ;) ) look to my lower legs.  I decided to use the rectangular knees and shin/calf wrapping style seen on the Montross action figure, and I reasoned that it would be impractical for a sniper to have shin armor, again, weight cuts down on mobility.  Plus, theoretically, different colors/styles of wrappings can be substituted for different mission environments (i.e. plains, forest, mountain, etc).

- The rangefinder--I've been lurking around the site and asking questions for about a month now.  I liked the idea of having an integrated rangefinder/macrobinoculars on my buy'ce, and have seen a few approved kits with them.  I somehow (I'm still not sure how this idea came to me) thought of using two (heavily) modified drink lids, one on each side of my bucket, to allow the RF to easily go over my visor, or rest on my forehead, being that the lids will naturally stop at a certain point!  I also have a small antenna planned, that will be placed on an earcap underneath the right side's lid, and be facing out at a slight diagonal angle (I'm thinking 30 degrees would look about correct, IMHO).

- Bullets (not shown)--I wanted to add a twist to my character, and make him have a preference for "slugthrowers" as they are called in the Star Wars universe.  There are canon slugthrowers in SW KotOR and KotOR II (Sidenote: two of my favorite games of all time!), however, I wondered if this would be at all acceptable in the era I am placing my character.  (As for the weapon I drew, I was really just doodling a random gun.  I haven't picked the weapon I will modify yet, for my main sniper rifle.)  Here's what I would like to do with the bullets, if this idea is potentially approvable:

Keep in mind that this may not necessarily be on my left arm.  I haven't decided on placement, yet.

Whoa.  Sorry for the wall of text, everyone!  A little information about myself that will be relevant in building this kit:

I am about 6'2"-3", and weigh in at about 195 pounds, though I am about to start working out regularly with a friend to get in better shape (partially so that my armor looks good on me, not that I am grossly overweight.)  I have an OM in one of my classes, and we will probably be having a planning/armor party in the next couple months, while I save money to begin this kit.  I wanted to slowly post ideas and concept drawings, as well as refining my overall look to make a high-quality kit.

Hopefully, the community will find that I have put significant thought into the building of my character, as well as trying to make the kit as "practical" as possible.  I will humbly accept any constructive criticisms, comments, pats on the back, etc. and look forward to hearing from you all!  Oya!

Also, I would like to apologize.  My artwork is nowhere near where some of the amazing stuff I've seen on here is.  I tried, though!  Feel free to request close-up drawings of specific pieces, and I will see what I can do.   :D

Love the concept art vod! What are you thinking for back armor - are you looking at making a backplate or using a cape/half-cape? Looking forward to seeing this as it develops! :>

I'm still trying to decide on that, actually.  I want to have a back plate, but I also would like to have a roman-style cape hanging from my shoulders.  I actually just realized (with your comment) that I have been meaning to draw up a concept of that.  I'll work on that now.  :D

Alrighty!  Here's a quick concept of the back armor, sans cape...

http://i.imgur.com/UHuWQ.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/UHuWQ.jpg)

...and with the cape!  (Note, the dotted lines indicate where the fasteners on the front will be--about on my clavicle bones.)

http://i.imgur.com/I1pCg.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/I1pCg.jpg)

For color scheme, I'm thinking a dark gray armor (like gunmetal gray, maybe?) with yellow highlights, a black or navy blue flight suit, and a blood-red cape, just for show, and a black cape for any mission that Novoc may be embarking on.  The cape will also have an attached hood, for when his buy'ce is not on his head.

Sorry for the URLs instead.  It won't let me post pictures, for some strange reason.

Nice concepts. :> I do have one question on the back armor - do you have a separate plate that covers your spine or is that going to be open space in the armor? I can't quite tell from the drawing. I really like the idea of a blood red cape. Can't go wrong with blood red!

It'll be open, and my vest will be showing in the gap between the plates.  Logically, I figured if there wasn't a plate directly on my spine, you would have maximum flexibility.

That's the key.  Hopefully everything'll work out when we build this!  My helmet is coming along fairly well.  I don't have a camera, so I haven't posted a WIP.

I think that's what I'll do.  I'll probably just ask my roommate.

Edit: Quick question, you planning on having the abdomen plates so slender in comparison to your torso?

Not quite sure yet, actually.  It was partially artistic license.  I spent a good deal of time on the main picture, as opposed to the quickly-drawn back pictures.  What would you suggest would work best?

I would advocate more coverage which both looks better from an armor standpoint, and also looks better aesthetically.

After all the whole reason for going the overlapping plate method was to be able to cover more in armor without losing mobility.

I have seen (as have most members I believe) the extreme ease in which Thaxos can bend and move with the armor. I personally won't be going with that look, but it certainly is genious. ;D

I've been thinking the same thing.  Is there a particular template you have used?  I can't decide the best way to do this without creating awkward parts under the overlapping segments.

Updates!  I finally took some pictures with my webcam.  This first bucket will be a bit small, so I may end up using it as just a prototype, however, I thought I'd share, just to show progress.  Since I took these, more work has been completed, so I will try to again get updates up soon.

For templates I simply mocked them up with cardboard to scale it to my body proportionately.

As for the setup for wearing, it really depends if you want to mount it stationary, to the vest, or to a rigging system independent of the vest.

Mainly I meant if you had a specific pattern you used, or if you just kinda eye-balled it.  I was thinking of creating like half the pattern on paper, folding it in half to create the full, individual piece of armor.  If that makes any semblance of sense whatsoever.   :P

I created the pattern  ;)

Yes that makes sense in order to preserve symmetry, make sure to take measurements of dimensions and angles if you're worried about precision. (I certainly did hehe)

Bump.

Life has gotten in the way of this.  College paper deadlines and finals week are incoming.  I'll have a good, solid month over Christmas break to plan and work on my kit.  I've got boxes of old broken and semi-working airsoft parts and bodies at home, so I've roughly got a couple weapons more or less planned out.  I need to buy a Dremel tool and some form of bonding agent (not Bondo, yet).  I'm also slowly continuing on working on my helmet prototype.

Hahaaaaa, life. Mmyep. College papers are so fun, right? >> As for Dremels, if you're gonna be in town over break (depending on which month, though) I have a Dremel tool, so if you need to cut or sand things with it, I might be able to help. As for bonding agents... I'm drawing a blank atm. I blame school. But good to hear that your helmet prototype is coming along slowly but surely!

I won't be in town, except for the KSU game.  I wouldn't miss THAT.   ;)  But I likely won't be able to be in town much.  I'll probably end up buying my own so I can work in my basement, though!   ;D

Definately! I haven't had trouble with it, I would suggest bondo instead though... easier to sand ;)

From what I've seen on here, most people recommend bondo as a final step, as bondo will easily crack, and is not as tough if you drop something.

I thought that you were using it as the final step (Sorry!) but yes, glue, then bondo for a good look 8)

Another bump, but this comes with a question:  My prototype helmet is basically, for all intents and purposes, ready to be fiberglassed.  I've seen in some other threads that people used resin first and then done fiberglass, while others haven't mentioned it, but due to budget restraints, I wanted to know if this is at all necessary.  Since this will just be a prototype, it'll more than likely just end up as a nice display piece.

A second question:  If I don't have a dremel tool, what are some reliable ways of cutting hard plastics (i.e. airsoft gun parts and the like.)?
Title: Re: If You Build Him, Novoc Will Come...

Novoc Im new so feel free to take this as friendly advice which I assure is whats its meant as.

As far as a dremel goes...looking back I have tried everything from hand saws to power tools and there really is no substitute, the tools are what make alot of this possible, after screwing up on about $100.00 worth of materials I bought my dremel and never looked back, and then I did fine.

But if I had just bought that dremel I could have saved that $100.00 and had it 2 months sooner. So realisticly the dremel is used on about 75% of your stuff as far as mandos go, Weapons, armor , bucket, leather, even some soft pieces. I would say find room in your budget even if it takes you a few months to get there, you wont regret it, and trying to substitute something for it is just gonna cost you more in the long run.

Okay.  I'm still formulating ideas, etc, and I finally found a picture of how I want my cape to look.  Obviously it won't be so pristine, and have some nice weathering to it, but this is the general idea.  Does anyone know where I can find a template for something like this, or whether anyone could make one for me, if I can't do it myself?

It's basically a rectangular sheet of fabric, and starting at either top corner you fold up the material about a quarter to a third of the way in on either side and affix that to you shoulders.

Basically, just take a blanket/sheet of fabric/whatever and grab two corners and pin them to your shoulders.

Sorry, thought I had already replied to this.

Basically, just lay out your rectangle of fabric, then figure out what central portion needs to remain untouched which will be the width of your cape at the shoulder attachment points.

Mark out those points, and then starting from the outer edge on each side of the fabric, taking the top two inches of fabric, make a vertical fold about 1-2 inches inward along the top of the cape fabric. Repeat folding, alternating direction of the fold, either under or over the fabric, until you reach the points you marked off.

Sew the folded fabric into tabs, affix some sort of covering piece to the top, and then add velcro to the underside.
Attach to armor, and voila, your cape now looks awesome!

Cool.  Now that I'm back from camp and have some new sketches, I'm ready to get working again.  I'll have up pics in the next week or so of my progress so far.  I've got a helmet half-way fiberglassed, a gun that needs a scope and some Bondo work, and a set of chest plates.  This fall, I intend to get working on my kit much harder, though I'll have to use my limited money carefully.  Oya!

It's time to REALLY get crackin'!

I know I've promised tangible updates for so long, but NOW is the time that actual work is getting done, and I am SUPER excited for it!!!!  I don't have a camera, currently, so I'm working on a way to get pictures up.  This weekend, I'm hoping to have the COMPLETELY revised look for my kit up on here for review, including specific plans for everything.  OYA!

Had a mini armor party with Akiva Tal'korel yesterday.  I have a Pre-Viszla Season 4-5 that I got from Falin, and I got it (roughly) trimmed with a dremel.  I also have my flight suit fitted, and a set of chest plates.  That said, here's everything I have/have begun work on:
Aaaaand here's what I still need:
Also, I hope to have pics up in the next day or two.  I'll borrow my roommate's camera, and have pics up for you all to see if everything I have fits okay.

Alrighty!  Here's my paint scheme as it stands.  The Blue will actually be a yellow, but for some reason the image editor I was using derped, and made it a puke color.  No matter the shade, it looked like puke.  So it's blue in the image, but will be yellow, IRL.

I feel like the shoulders need some yellow, too, but I wasn't sure how I wanted them to look just yet, so I left it blank for the time being.  Plenty of time to paint on and re-weather them if need be.

I don't have fitted pics of the plates on my body because the person who took them (hint:  Akiva  ;) ) hasn't sent them to me yet.  Rest assured, she is convinced everything fits properly.  I've also started to paint the earcaps of my Pre-Viszla (The helmet itself is still in my dorm room... oops...), and I'll post up some pics of them, when I get access to a camera.  See you soon!

Post by: Novoc Mereel on Jan 28, 2013, 09:03 AM
FINALLY!  I've got some pics to show everyone!  I don't have a camera, so pics come when I can find a friend or OM to take a couple of my progress, or let me borrow one (sorry!).  Anyway, here's some pics to make sure my flight suit does, in fact, fit properly.

Flight suit (Back) - ignore how awkward it looks, once again...   :P

All that said, I've done a bit more work on the helmet, and have begun painting my sidearm and my chest plates.  Feedback would be appreciated!

How did your pre-vizla helmet come out? I ask, because that's the one that I ordered.

I love mine!  I'm actually getting ready, after a long hiatus, to sit down and get some work done on it today!  I highly recommend picking one up.  PJ/Hondo/Falin/Whatever you want to call him does phenomenal work.

The legs of your flight suit will most likely need to be taken in. ;)

Sweet.  I've got a friend who does stuff like that fairly regularly, so I'll have her give me a hand when I get back to school.  :)

Hellooooooooo, Mercs!

I could make a bunch of definitely-hilarious jokes about things that are long overdue, but the truth is that nearly six years ago, I was pretty much broke, under a load of stress from my senior year of college, had a pretty nutty schedule, and a real lack of commitment. I want to own the fact that maybe at that time I wasn't as good at deadlines as I thought I was, and maybe bit off a lot more than I could chew at the time.

But that was then.

I've been toying with the idea of starting my kit back up for a couple months, but when I discovered my only remaining local Mercs (BedlamX and his wife) were moving away and that Tommy was selling some of his old kit, I knew it was the big sign I needed to jump back in. So I picked it up, and have been working on my kit most evenings after work. Now that I'm older, wiser, and have a stable career, I can really crack down on this project. Below, you will find my progress and some commentary.

This helmet has been staring at me for a long time on my shelf. I really just need to do some detail on the interior and reset the visor in place. I've got some visor clips I found out about on a forum thread coming in the mail. I'll update my helmet thread (http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=66546.msg996499#msg996499) as soon as those arrive and I have some updates to share.

Here's pretty much everything else I have.

I acquired the clone trooper shins and thighs as b-pulls from KWDesigns a few years back. I've rough-trimmed them and will hopefully be attending an armor party in the near future with some Kansas City-area MMCC and 501st folks to help me with putting them together. I'm aware that per the CRL's pieces from other Star Wars costumes must be modified in some way as to not immediately give away what they are. The shins/greaves will have kneecaps built into them, and I'm planning to have calf-mounted jump jets of some sort. At this moment, I'm still kinda part hunting for something that feels right for them, but am confident I'll figure something out soon. The thighs won't change a whole lot other than being cut down a bit, because even on my 6'3" frame, they're a bit long. I suppose it's always easier to cut away material as opposed to add material! My main plan is to have attachments on the outside of the thighs to put my blasters on. More on that soon!

I got this backplate from what Tommy sold me. It had an ammo pack mounted to it with an ammo chute that attached to the gauntlets I bought from him (below).

Said gauntlets as mentioned above. The minigun is the left side. I'm looking to clean them up a bit, add a greeblie or two to the right gauntlet (I'm currently thinking a vibroblace and/or a comm pad), and of course repaint them. I'm going to re-use the ammo chute pictured, but I've got a different idea in mind for the ammo pack on my back plate.

Also pictured with my back plate was my chest armor I've started on. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why it came out sideways. I removed and re-uploaded it probably four times. There's also the gloves I'm trying to decide on. They're actually from my marching band days, and had only really been worn once. For now they'll do, but I may end up replacing them. Thought if nothing else, they'd be a cool way to give my kit a personal flair and tie to other parts of my life that wouldn't ever be noticed by the public. Also, didn't mean to glare, it had been a long day. I promise I'm a lot more friendly-looking!

Here's a pic of the chest plate and a collar for sizing purposes. Didn't have a second person on hand, and it's sitting a little weird, but I think I got pretty close. I made a cardboard template out of an old pizza box and triple-checked everything. I think I did ok, but am open to constructive criticism as always

Better pic of the chest plate. I cut out the diamond shape and made a chest diamond below.

Thanks for reading! Oya! (Seriously, why does the forum uploader randomly rotate my pictures?!)

P.S. Please feel free to check in on my WIP for my blasters (http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=163551.0), if you feel so inclined. Thanks again for reading!
