Title: Ref's ESB Fett
Post by: Ref Al'drann on Dec 15, 2012, 04:56 PM
Alright! I'm ready to jump right in!

Here's where I'm at so far:
(http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/472074_457449614313191_704754458_o.jpg)(http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/382020_457449624313190_397287699_n.jpg)

The blaster isn't finished, obviously. I've got all the necessary parts in a bag of greeblies that came with it. Except for a few parts which I'll have to buy.
The flightsuit fits me like a glove. I was really amazed when I put it on how precise the fit was even though it wasn't made for me and bought through a third party.

One thing that concerns me is that the thigh pouches are very close together.

When looking at this reference it loos like I might have to re-position them to the outside of my leg

Wow. That flightsuit fits great. I made some thigh pouches, and made them as close to Boba's as possible, but yours do seem a bit close. Where did you get the gun?

On a more negative note, I believe those are the boots that went up in the supply depot that you beat me to a month or so ago.

I got everything in one fell swoop through a guy who was selling off his ESB stuff on TDH. The blaster is made by Sidewinder and is upgraded with an authentic Heiland flash tube.

Nah the ones I have on are Man of War boots I bought off of TDH. Do you mean these boots?

You've certainly acquired some top quality stuff to start out with!  The thigh pouches do indeed look like they are placed too close to where the cod armor would be.  But I personally wouldn't make an adjustment until you have the cod and knee armor.

If you have any questions along the way, I'd be happy to help you!

i expect the cod will push them apart a bit, so worry about that later :D

looking great so far!

From my experiences here, I've learned if you're going to do something, you should try to do it right the first time.

Yeah I'm definitely going to wait on adjustments. I mostly just wanted to know if this was a fluke or if the LadySewForUs suits were always made that way.

Having seen the build threads and continued upgrades of your Ref and custom suit, I can say that without out a doubt, this shall be one of the most sheb-kicking Boba suits in Mercs.

Wow, thank you! I'll try not to disappoint

Updates: I assembled my cape and tore it all up. I'm going to send it through the wash a few more times and then weather it with my airbrush. I'm also working on my gauntlets. Originally I had tried to scratchbuild them out of card stock, but they got pretty warped during the resin and fiberglass stage for some reason. I'm going to start them over with sintra and pvc.

I'll have some updates coming up. My Asok Boba was shipped today and I've ordered a Jetpack kit from Fettseven. My gauntlets are in the works. I have to redo them out of sintra before I even think about creating a mold. The ones I did out of card are too flimsy to cast.

Need some feedback on my flight suit. What does everyone thing about the color?
Inside lighting

Outside lighting
(http://i46.tinypic.com/330s4xt.jpg)

I'm shooting to mimic the Jeremy Bulloch suit
(http://bobafettcostuming.wikispaces.com/file/view/Jeremy_Bulloch.png)

It seems very blue to me, but I can't determine whether it's too blue or not. My hope is that it will dull down somewhat with weathering.
If necessary I'll run it through a diluted color remover bath to fade it out.

If lady made it then the color is most likely  correct. She has been on the Dented Helmet for years and has always made a strive for screen accuracy.

Remember weathering makes a world of differance! ;)

It was originally white though. I'm not sure why. I did research and found out she uses evening blue so I used evening blue with pearl grey in a 2:1 ratio.

I thought it looked white in your first pic  :D
Head scratcher.
Years ago I was sourcing parts and came across her work. She trys to get everything correct from stitching to fabric. Its seems strange that she would not have the right color. Unless its her early work.

Its research time!

Honestly, for ESB, it looks about right. Once it's weathered up it will be perfect. The vest should be nearly white and the flightsuit more blue. It was ROTJ that went to more greys.
Title: Re: Ref's ESB Fett
Post by: Ref Al'drann on Feb 05, 2013, 12:14 AM
I could probably just ask the guy I bought it from what's up, but the answer wouldn't matter to me that much because it won't change what I have.

I'm planning on fading it tomorrow by misting it (lightly and in a very controlled manner) with a bleach mixture. Hopefully it works.

Yeah it's just that I've seen ESBs with super blue flightsuits and I just don't like the look. If it's too blue I find it very distracting. I want it to read as a grey/blue. But yeah I understand the main point of your statement. I'm just being super anal about this costume

Double posting, but I wanted to show you guys what I did today!

It's still missing the Molex greeblies that go up on the scope mounts, but I'm in love with this rifle at the moment.
It's a shame I only have my phone camera right now... You'll just have to trust me when I say that the weathering is subtle.

Glad I found this thread just now- Great job on the EE-3! I think the color is good and you can pretty much bank on anything LSFU makes.

Thanks man! Yeah I'm loving this build because I fall in love with every little piece haha

OK so I hope you guys aren't too sick of me talking about my flightsuit, but I finally got a base color I'm happy with!

Thanks guys!

Hey so I'm hoping to jump on some armor soon. I love RKDs stuff and I'm really hoping it'll fit right. I printed out the Large WOF templates and taped them onto my vest. (sorry for the cell phone pic, it's all I've got)

I compared to this picture and it seemed like a good match to me.

I'd love a second or third or fourth opinion before I commit.

I just went with Bobamaker to be on the safe size when it comes to armor. I didn't go IOA because I was worried it would be too big. However, your chest seems like RKD's IOA would be a good fit if you don't make it yourself.

I've been in touch with Bobamaker as well, I just like to explore my options before I make a purchase like this. I don't want to make my own armor because I know I can't get that compound curve in the chest plates and backplate.

Have you seen Bobafiend's build? I was looking at it, and all of his plates are sintra.

The best part about the RKD's are the collar/ backplate. That is very hard to do in sintra. My original plates are fairly comparable to what I have now, the RKD chest plates are not bent that dramatically.  The real difference is the nice soft bevel around the edge and the smooth curvatures.  The sintra I used was thin so it bent easily but was prone to warping.

Title: Re: Ref's ESB Fett
Post by: Vult Tavik on Feb 21, 2013, 03:07 PM
It definitely was related to several factors depending on who you are dealing with- time to create, getting in on runs with others, balancing making the stuff they sell vs. the stuff they are making for themselves, etc... Sometimes you just have to be patient for some of the good stuff. It never bothers me when they are honest up front (LSFU and Cruzer are fine examples), I just hate when people tell you one thing to get you to buy from them, then deliver on an entirely different time frame without keeping you updated and you have to bug them and the whole thing just leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Back to Ref's Awesome Boba Build!

Nothing ultra exciting. I've mostly been waiting on packages.
I've just started a new job that I'm really enjoying, but 12 hour days are not uncommon. Unfortunately, that means that I either don't have time to work on anything and my personal projects and commissions get so backed up that working on them is sometimes more stressful than enjoyable.

But here's where my jetpack is right now. I'm hoping to paint the keys and the silver damage tomorrow when I have some down time.

Not super exciting, but it's progress!

So where I can I've been making steady progress. The helmet has been the scariest part for me, but I've finished the back panels, which are the hardest part, so I'm feeling more confident now.

The jetpack is another thing I've been working on steadily. I've got some paint laid out, but my yellow is all wrong so I'll have to fix that. This is still very much a WIP. There's a lot more painting and weathering to go.

In other news I've got my holster and my chestlights.
And Fettpride has informed me that my armor should be on my doorstep in just 3 weeks.
In the meantime I'll be painting and working on my gauntlets.

C&C is always appreciated!

So progress has been pretty slow...
I'm still waiting on my armor to arrive so I haven't felt much urgency, unfortunately.

Here's where I am on the helmet:

First armor plate painted (pre weathering).  I'm testing out this Spruce Green to see if I like it.

It's definitely different from my helmet, which is good.  I think once I weather it all up it will match the references better.

Misting with Rusto Hunt Club Green and Flat Black will help a bit.  (Before removing masking)

I re-did my ab plate. Wasn't happy with it. Took your advice BobaFiend and it worked out really well. Used a different yellow. It's a bit... grittier.

Now I've just got to paint my shoulders and knees and I'll be in the home stretch!

Thanks for the support everyone! I'll have an update with pictures soon.

I got everything done enough to do a test fit.

Here are the issues I see:

1. Jetpack is sagging and pulling my collar back.  I think if I tighten my harness, it should fix things.
2. You can see my neck clear as day. I have a long neck. I don't know how to fix it :-[ Maybe if I tilt my helmet back?
3. I forgot to actually attach the braids to anything...
4. I know the bottom half of my rangefinder is missing (adhesive is drying).
5. I also know I'm missing my gauntlet hose. I'm trying to fix that.

What did I miss?

So far, so good dude. I love it! I'l comment on your points as you have them listed:

1. For my harness, I exhale all the air I can, and have my slave handler pull it as tight as they can. Then I inhale all the way I can and hold it. I don't have the issue of sagging anymore.
2. Lol long neck. I actually have the opposite problem where I have a short neck and it looks like I don't have one. I sent you a text last night regarding this, it'd be in your best interest to reply.

(http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa271/angel-of-oblivion23/IMG_5789.jpg) (http://s197.photobucket.com/user/angel-of-oblivion23/media/IMG_5789.jpg.html)

3. I attached the braids to the vest by going through them a few times with needle and thread. Four troops in and no issues yet.

Additionally, the thong and knee straps look too clean. Finally, the vest looks big in that first picture... is it? Or is that just the angle? Overall it's looking sweet dude :)

Point, that's a good suggestion, but I think I'd overheat. This costume is much warmer than my custom and I think wearing a helmet gasket might be dangerous.

Thanks Byrek! All really helpful suggestions! I'll take a look at the vest again. I'm doing another test fit of the torso armor and jetpack tonight before my event tomorrow morning.

Thanks Niabi! Yeah it's an issue that I became aware of today. I did my first unofficial troop today and I noticed it when I suited up. Unfortunately the armor is bolted on. I can't redo the eyelets so I have to snap the bolts off and reposition them.

There were some other fixes that also came to light during the troop. So this has to go back into the workbench before it gets submitted.

A couple of pictures from the event:

Issue:
1. Some of my adhesive failed (earcap, gauntlet hose, flamethrower)
2. Armor placement
3. Jetpack sagging.  I'm going to invest in a better harness.  The one I currently have won't cut it for long troops.
4. My EE-3 is scratching my gauntlets to hell.  I need to repaint the bottoms of the clamshells and hit them with a ton of dullcote.
5. My sidearm swings like crazy when I walk.  I imagine it looks pretty ridiculous.  Can any ESBs comment on how they deal with that?
6. Didn't have time to weather my gloves.

So there's a lot to do, but that's what these first, unofficial troops are for.  It was awesome being a "face" character and to have people say "Boba!" and be right for once

1. Gorilla Glue brand super glue. NOT Gorilla glue, but their super glue (clear bottle, blue cap, purchased at Wal Mart). I've had no problems yet, and I used it on all my pieces that needed it while building.
2. Fix it! Haha, I don't know how you did your attachment, so can't help really.
3. I told you how to fix that harness!
4. Yup. Happens :(
5. I haven't yet. *clunk* *Clunk* Manbro's ideas isn't terrible, but I truthfully wouldn't risk it. I have a wide strap instead of the canon strap, and my doesn't swing much.
6. I wore mine to work on day, and they haven't gotten clean since.

Additionally:
I saw that new pic on FB, and had some feedback.
1. Your ammo belt seems a bit light (maybe mine is just dark), and maybe it could benefit from a MISTING of Rustoleum's Kona Brown or similar.
2. Again with the vest... Is it just the picture?
3. Hip pouches are empty! Do what I do and put dish towels and underwear in them. I gave a presentation to a local theater about costuming recently and a child asked what was in my pockets. I replied "Dish towels and underwear." He thought I was kidding till I opened one up and pulled out a pair of halloween boxers.
4. You gloves seem very dark. They're like one shade away from black haha.
5. If you decide to start thinking about upgrades later, get a pair of MoW's 2013 boots. They're fantastic!

Thanks man! Appreciate the feedback. I fixed the placement issue with my right chest plate and diamond. My harness has been ordered so that'll fix the collar being pulled back. As far as the vest goes, it's fitted for me, but it does want to flare out a bit. I might have to talk to a tailor and have it taken in in a hidden location. I have a theory that most of the issues above the waist are caused by my crappy harness. I'll do another test run once I've upgraded. The belt matches references, but it could use some more weathering to darken it a bit, I agree. The gloves are kind of dark, but not as extreme as they look in that picture. Not a ton I can do about that. Maybe mist with a light grey?

Good suggestion on the dish towels! I have some scrap fabric that should do the trick. And with the boots, I might upgrade eventually, but my 2012s allowed me to install hidden spurs behind the toe spikes so I sound like Boba when I walk.

Thanks again for the help everyone! This is a big undertaking and I definitely need all the assistance I can get! :)

Couple notes - He was using a green light that really brought out the red in the orange paint of my shoulder and knees (they're much more muted, I promise. I didn't have my usual helper and the harness can be a bit hard to get right for someone who's never done it before so I had some jetpack slippage towards the end there...
