Title: hood....
Post by: Dorittos on Jan 10, 2013, 07:05 PM
so i was looking at stuff on ebay and i found this

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Grey-Dance-Rave-Hood-Cosplay-Star-Assassins-Renaissance-Creed-Wars-Faire-/170950209949?pt=US_Childrens_Unisex_Clothing&hash=item27cd6d319d

Hoods are usually a controversial topic on the forums  I mean, its acceptable but why would you need one when you have such a sweet helmet? Especially at that price, that's steep.

most medieval hoods (try googling medieval archer hood) I came across are around $30, so $55 is a little more then what I would pay.

Hoods aren't really that controversial. Some things were taken out of context a little bit ago and caused some drama, but its all in the past now....

Here is my thought on the hood:

In Universe: What would the purpose be? To keep the rain off your head? The wind/sand/sun out of your eyes? That's what the helmet already does. If you want to go incognito: Take the helmet, and the rest of the armor off.

In real life: Same as in universe ideas, but add to it these things: Why would you want to cover up something you spent so much time and effort to look awesome? It's very possibly going to add a lot of heat, by reducing airflow.

As far as adding mystery: Your face is hidden inside of a helmet. You can't see in from the outside. What more mystery do you need?

This! You pretty much summed up my thoughts on the topic Jaro :D

Please, let's not have another of those threads...
If he wants to have a hood, then let him.

I'd think that you could make a hood and weather it yourself for less than the price of what that's asking. Plus it'd be more fun. :)

Actually the OP asked for an opinion. That's what these threads are for. You are right in the fact that he can wear one. I was giving him an argument for why he shouldn't

Keep in mind that for your application photos you'll have to have the hood (which is not required) off, to show the helmet, which IS required.

My wife's been writing historical fiction and thus has been doing a lot of research, which has turned up one good reason for a cloth covering:  Exactly the same reason the Templars, Turks, and Saracens used cloth wraps during the Crusades, so the sun doesn't turn a metal helm into an oven for your thinkybox.  There's your good in-universe reason.  Now, that wouldn't make sense unless the rest of the kit looked in place in a desert, so do with that what you will.

Ill just leave this here.

I trust individual costumers can form their own opinion on what is right for their own kit and build accordingly.

To answer your initial question. Yes it could pass.

That is all.

I've never been a big fan of hoods, but I have to say, if this is implemented properly and the raggedy theme is carried throughout the kit, this could look very, very cool. Though I think it would look best if it was left down.

Go for it! The same arguments against the hood could also be used against capes and there are many approved kits with capes. Add a bit more character with the hood and have fun!

I know Hydra's build is cool and all but.. My opinion remains the same, hoods have no place over a helmet. But yes, as long as you can be approved with it go for it, its your kit after all.

Last time I was in a conversation like this I was senselessly banned for 24 hours, so I'm going to simply post my opinion and move on...

We"re costumers...we make what we feel is best for our build. If our Mando is a Mando who likes wearing a hood, then so be it. There are several things you can ask about hoods, and segeral answers you can give.

I see modern day soldiers wwearing ponchos that have hoods over their helmets. As stated before, it just adds character and may hold meaning. Why bother painting your armor, or wearing spikes or a loin cloth? Because it's artistic. Costume design and building is just that...it's a style and an art form. That's all.

But...don't use an Assassin's Creed Hood, you can do better :)

My thoughts on the modern soldiers wearing hoods over helmets are simple.  Those uniforms do absolutely nothing to keep your neck warm or to keep rain water out of your collar.  Is it an in universe problem?  Probably not, but it sure seems practical to me in real life.  Plus, there has to be some reason Arabs started wearing coverings on their head and neck in their desert environment.  I say, if you want it, go for it.

Really? Come on now... You can't compare RL soldiers wearing basically big hats and swelteringly hot uniforms, to Fantasy characters wearing completely environmentally controlled suits that can even help the person inside survive in the vacuum of space for short periods of time. I agree if you want to do it, do it. But call a spade a spade.
