Title: Byrek's ESB Boba (501st APPROVED)
Post by: Byrek Avery on Jul 09, 2013, 08:08 PM
I decided that I should get started on Boba. I decided to make the plates out of PVC to pinch a couple (Thousand) pennies. My updated budget list will be posted below. When showing the progress of these plates to Stormtrooperguy, he said he was impressed with the shape and that it could work.

I wanted to finish one plate before continuing in order to make sure I could do it. Here are the progress pictures. I took a bunch to demonstrate that I could achieve the depth factor and the weathering with rattlecans:

My yellow:

My green after weathering (before blackwash):

Here is where I am so far. all pieces are in various stages of completion.

Here is my updated budget and the status of each item:

Helmet: Get one from Bob for $90 - Yet to be ordered

Jetpack: I'll probably go with MoW for $300 - Yet to be ordered

Flightsuit: Bought one off of TDH for $100. Also has a built in neckseal which saves me $25 from Arkady. He claims it's the right color, but I'm not sold - Ordered, not yet paid.

Vest: Arkady - $50 Talked to her, and can't order until August.

Boots: Meep. $150 MoW. I'm going to try to make my own, but I'm not holding my breath. - Not yet ordered.

Gauntlets: I have a set of resin ones with all doodads. I just need to replace the bottoms.

Gloves: not sure what I'm doing about these yet... $10-$90

Girthbelt: Have it, just need to keep dying it.

Ammo belt: Easy enough to do, just a little elbow grease. $30 - Yet to start.

Sidearm: $110 off of ebay, and I plan on trying to make the holster. $140 - Yet to be ordered/started.

Armor Itself: I'll be unrolling PVC for most of it aside from Cod,knees, and back. So far, $6. Back, and knees

Paints: Budget painting for $50 So far - $12

Wookie braids: Braiding my own with weave hair - $6

Shin tools: I think they're like $50 for the original parts with mods?

EE-3: Ordered to have it made for $215. - Ordered, half paid for.

Looks like a good plan. It does look like that green is a bit too dark though.

So I did the 3D weathering on the Right shoulder and Left chest plate. I DO plan on making these smoother, but they're the appropriate depth (I think). Thoughts?

Haha, I hope so! My original deadline was January 2015, but I'm REALLY enjoying working on this. But now I think I want it done for June 2014. Think that's pushing it?

Some people need a deadline to help move things along.  Others see deadlines as pressure, and can cause stress.  I try to make a big event the "deadline" (Woburn, St Pats, BCC, etc..).  Do what works for you.  Just keep working on it, and when its done, its done.

I wouldn't by anything other than aluminum parts from evolution. I hear their resin parts are crap.  Also that flightsuit looks right for ROTJ but not for ESB.

Your armor green looks too dark to me, what color and brand is it?

Yeah, I heard about Evolution after posting the list.

For the flightsuit, like I said, I'm not sold on the color. He insists, but for $100, it could be green and if be okay with it. Speaking of green, it's hunt club green. I'm going to black wash it before messing with the color.
Title: Re: Byrek's ESB Boba
Post by: BobaFiend on Jul 13, 2013, 01:11 PM
The ESB left chest plate is more blue than hunt club green. Mine is a base of Rusto Spruce Green misted heavily with Krylon Navy Blue and misted lightly with Rusto Hunt Club Green and Rusto Flat Black.

The Krylon hunter green is too green, make sure you're using Rustoleum.  If you planned to do all the plates the same color- I would not use Rusto Hunt Club Green as your main color.  It's far too dark. Use it as a misting color over a lighter green.

If you ask nicely, I'm sure Bob or Brian might let you see theirs.  Bob's Fett was good enough, that he, is on the side of the box of the Boba Helmet with voice changer.

I spent a ton of time masking these today, and just when I thought I was coming together, I decided to blackwash it, and it came out WAY too dark. Plus, I spent soooo much time trying to figure out the correct shade for the orange, and once I was happy, the paint was peeling off with the masking fluid because it was so think.

Any guesses on who has tomorrow off from work and who is going to be spending all of his time painting AGAIN?

That damage is really big and not very accurate.  Here are some resources to help you out.

Stencils: http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f25/boba-fett-esb-armor-stencils-42095/
Masking Process (among other helpful videos): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zwc1ZMy1E9E&feature=c4-overview&playnext=1&list=TLESNJpDaCQ_4

Masking and painting should take a number of days at least in order to be well done and accurate.  I would take your time.

So how do you really feel? Haha, just kidding. I'd expect nothing less. I've been using those stencils, but only eyeballing it. Due to the lack of craft stores around me, I've been using toothpaste which while great and all, I'm just striking out with doing minuscule weathering with it. I have another idea that I'm going to execute tomorrow to see how it works.

I'm not much of a take my time kind of guy. I work a lot in one sitting. Maybe it's my downfall, but like I said, I have an idea.

Sorry if I'm a bit blunt. I know you can take it!  :P I hope you don't mind, if you're making a Boba I'm gonna tell you what I think.

It helps a LOT to draw the damage on with a soft (6B) artist pencil first and then fill it in with masking fluid. I use Windsor Newton and it works okay- it's a bit runny for my taste.  I apply my masking fluid with a cut off end of a Q-tip. I use the cardboard stick cut at a 45 degree angle for a nice tip that can soak up some fluid but remain rigid.  I would get some masking fluid and pencils off Amazon if you absolutely can't get them near  you.

Sir, I wouldn't make a Boba if I couldn't take the heat  ;D

That's a really good Idea with the pencil! I hadn't thought of that. I'll give it a try.  8)

Okay guys. I sucked up my need for instant gratification, and spent all day on one plate. And I mean like ALL day.

Gentlemen, I believe we have liftoff.

BEFORE:

(http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa271/angel-of-oblivion23/PhotoJul1523356PM.jpg) (http://s197.photobucket.com/user/angel-of-oblivion23/media/PhotoJul1523356PM.jpg.html)

AFTER:

(http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa271/angel-of-oblivion23/IMG_2098.jpg) (http://s197.photobucket.com/user/angel-of-oblivion23/media/IMG_2098.jpg.html)

I just got through removing all the tape, and the paint is still tacky as I type, so tomorrow I'll do a (different) blackwash, and wetsand it duller.

This took my entire day minus the five hours I was in class. IF you still don't like it, please speak up. I take criticism well.

Round of applause for the masking! I still think your green is too dark and is only going to get darker with a blackwash, but I gave my color advice above if you wish to try different avenues.

So my new goal: One good sized update a day.

So: "Finished" my girth belt:

(http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa271/angel-of-oblivion23/null-31.jpg) (http://s197.photobucket.com/user/angel-of-oblivion23/media/null-31.jpg.html)

And my cod piece was put together:

(http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa271/angel-of-oblivion23/null-29.jpg) (http://s197.photobucket.com/user/angel-of-oblivion23/media/null-29.jpg.html)

(http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa271/angel-of-oblivion23/null-27.jpg) (http://s197.photobucket.com/user/angel-of-oblivion23/media/null-27.jpg.html)

(http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa271/angel-of-oblivion23/null-28.jpg) (http://s197.photobucket.com/user/angel-of-oblivion23/media/null-28.jpg.html)

(http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa271/angel-of-oblivion23/null-30.jpg) (http://s197.photobucket.com/user/angel-of-oblivion23/media/null-30.jpg.html)

I'll be doing all my sanding, beveling, puttying, and bondoing tomorrow. And before anyone tells me that Boba did not have two Chicago screws on the cod, I know. This part is 100% covered by the girth, and this blemish allowed me to scratchbuild the cod.

In other news: The grey coat has gone of the collar plate; silver to follow.

So I got my vest yesterday, and did a ton of hemming today. Funny story, the guy I got it from had the shoulder bells on backwards.

Is the bottom okay? It's just pinned at the moment.
And is the shoulder okay? I only did one to make sure.

Also, I think I found an appropriate color for the gauntlets and helmet. What do the Boba guys think of this?

Gaunt color looks fine to me. Does the armor seem right to you? Have you looked through the ESB gallery on TDH?
It still looks far too dark to me.

Probably more times than I can count

It does look right to me. I've studied it many times, and while you're one of the three guys I go to for my Boba advice, the other two (Stormtrooperguy and Webchief) don't seem to be concerned with it.

So I really worked on my belt today. I put velcro on the ammo pouches to hold the hip pouches, and made a new under belt. The belt pictured is still the ROTJ one, as the ESB one is still drying. I'm yet to add the snaps.

So I prepped my gaunts for paint. I also made sure I drilled all necessary holes for the greebs. Now I only need the ESB flamethrower and the whipcord housing. Keep in mind, everything is just placed. This may be my last update until after BCC.

Looking good! That rocket is awfully pretty. The gaunt darts should be level with the horizontal section below them, if that makes sense.

Thanks. It's an RKD B-pull. I need to touch up the paint, as it was painted for Byrek. I'll fix up the dart housings in a couple days :)

All in all it's coming together nicely though.

I would give it all a rubdown with #000 steel wool. It will dull the finish and blend the colors a bit to deaden the yellow with some of the green pigment.  Makes it all look very unified. Then finish with Testor's Dullcote

Sorry for the lack of updates guys, I got an internship, I work part time, school full time, and I have a sick girlfriend. I am pretty much done everything I can do without pouring money out of my wallet for now...

-Flak Vest - I got pissed off at it. Brought it to seamstress to add zipper and attach other sleeve cause I'm lazy and am tired of doing all the work.
-Helmet was ordered this morning. Should have it in a couple weeks.
-I had to order my Range Finder from Asok since it has to be clear, and while I was there I figured I should get a metal stalk too...  ;)
-Working on commissions to pay for my boots, gloves, armor bits that are left, and Jetpack.

Actually... I'm gonna go order my knees and back. brb.

If I wore Jango more often, it might be worth my while to invest in a vac-formed jetpack, rather than a resin one.  That thing is HEAVY!

Big update!

Got my gloves:

WCA Vac form knees:

Gauntlet bottoms are finally assembled. The final detail pieces are drying.

(http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa271/angel-of-oblivion23/null-73.jpg) (http://s197.photobucket.com/user/angel-of-oblivion23/media/null-73.jpg.html)

And finally, I got my jetpack! I'm not very good at vacform pieces, so I have a question. The top piece as well as the body piece both have a return. Which one should I cut off? I'm waiting until Gordon's armor party Before putting it together as I'd like other opinions.

(http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa271/angel-of-oblivion23/null-70.jpg) (http://s197.photobucket.com/user/angel-of-oblivion23/media/null-70.jpg.html)

I got my clear rangefinder and aluminum stalk from Asok. I could have sworn that these were hallowed out, but I guess I was mistaken. Come Monday, I'm going to swing by my local Auto shop and see if they have a long drill bit. I also ordered my helmet from Bob, so expect paint work soon!

Left to order: Boots, a back plate, my RF servo/lights. Yup. That's it.  :)

Do you have a drill press? Even with it it's going to be very very hard to drill a straight 8" hole down that little bit of aluminum.

^^this^^

You need a drill press and a very high quality bit as it will need to ove 8" long but very thin. Try to find a professnal machinist even if you need pay him $20 IMHO.

Great looking gloves! Are those from MOW?

For the JP it looks like the top return needs to be trimmed, but than again only some parts... Can you cut slits and tuck the returns in?

Or two 4" long holes. Make sure you get perfect center on both ends.  Either way would suck.

My 2cents
Jobber SS/TS/Ti rated aircraft or extra long bit should work fine, if you have a lathe center your piece and just use the bit as an end-mill so the hole is centered.

Oh and cutting fluid.

If you can find the right bit, my in-laws have a drill press.  We can swing over there during the build day next weekend.  Only 7 mins from my house.

Sorry about the lack of updates guys, been super busy + I was waiting for my vest to be tailored, and I'm waiting for my bucket to come in.

Vest was completed today, so I finished the symbol on the chest:

And then did all of my attaching minus the back plate (which will be tomorrow):

Yeah the ESB gloves are dark grey.

Really impressed with your progress.  Super interested to see what you do with the helmet.

Also you better be going to Celebration so we can have unofficial twin day.  It's likely I'll be finished with my Boba the day before the con at the rate I'm going.

I'll probably paint it to look very similar to this:

http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab52/intwenothor/boba17.jpg

Same Scheme at least :P

But in all actuality, I'm very scared about it. So much detail work, but I've picked up some of the coolest osik for this bucket. My Rangefinder servo kit, aluminum Asok stalk, clear asok Rangefinder topper, and I'm looking into padding now.

And I swear to god, you better have him done. I cobbled this guy together in like 3 months so far. Haven't you been waiting for armor for like 6?

Edit: Just bought my JP harness from a guy on TDH for $35. Officially bought final piece.

They look about right to me before weathering.  The ESB gloves are much lighter than the ones in Rotj.

Double check the gloves; you have them mixed up. The ESB ones are the darker ones.

To weather the soles, I actually wore the boots to King Richard's Faire (which is a dirt ground Renaissance Faire), and it worked quite well. I'll be buying some of Rustoleum's "Neverwet," to seal the dirt in. For those of you who haven't heard of Neverwet, or if you have heard of it and just want to be amazed, check this out:

In other news, I ordered my new jetpack from MoW. That's about all that's been going on though. Been busting my chops on my girlfriend's Aurra Sing.

Do a test on the bottom of the soles or something first with the neverwet.  It can give you a weird finish on some things. I know it can frost glass.

If you're painting the layers in the opposite order, why are you masking this way?  It seems like you're making it more complicated than it needs to be.

I may be. However, it works for me. I tried doing it everyone elses way, and it came out too splotchy. I then tried this method, and people love the outcome. I'll keep doing what I do best.

I'm not such a fan of the "Eye scar," I may redo it. But I love how the rest came out. Some may notice that my kill stripes aren't there. I'll be doing them later on. I didn't want too many layers of tape on at once.

I appriciate everyone's feedback. The lime green color is created by the crappy lighting in my bed room. So today, I took my pictures outdoors.

As I previously mentioned, I don't like the eye scar. I'll be redoing it after I finish the rest of the helmet. This is before any wet sanding, or minor weathering:

You're not quite even there on the collar. I'd move it down just a bit too - once you mount the jetpack its weight should pull it back to the correct spacing, as is I'm concerned that it'll be pulled back too much.

Looking real nice vod, really liking the Jetpack.

I don't agree with the others about the collar, the weight of the jet pack should rest on your harness and have no effect on the collar. I have issues with my half cape pulling my collar back but you seem to have got yours right.

I'm not a fan of the whole "Nope. Nope. Nope. It's my kit and I'll cry if I want to," attitude that's usually on this site, but sorry guys. You're not right.

First off, My collar is a solid half inch farther out from my neck than Boba's was in ESB/ROTJ. And Tact is right, we wear harnesses for a reason. And just to show you guys that it won't affect me, I got the attachment done on the JP, put it on, did dishes for a half an hour, and then took these pics:

(http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa271/angel-of-oblivion23/PhotoOct1592707PM.jpg) (http://s197.photobucket.com/user/angel-of-oblivion23/media/PhotoOct1592707PM.jpg.html)

The collar was not put on in front of a mirror, so the alignment is a smidge off

Here I am at RICC! What a great con. If you weren't there, you missed out on some sweet stuff.

Here I am with John Morton who was in Bespin Boba for like 5 seconds. I have his signature inside the bucket. This picture also shows my right gauntlets lack of one dart, two outside switches, and the thing that the hose goes on.

Okay, so I think I'm just about ready for an app! I'm missing two greebs, but I have them both in hand, just not attached. I showed up at my buddy's son's Star Wars themed birthday, so I took my pre-app pics in their basement.

Looking good, dude! Well done!

Where's your sidearm? Your holster is riding a little high.

Also, I'm sure it's the lighting, but I just want to make sure, what color is your flightsuit? I'm not seeing any blue.

Well, I was at a one-year-old's birthday, so I opted with no guns, but since my sidearm is still the innacurrate one, upon sending in my app I'll be electing the weaponless Boba until I get a Pulce.

The FS has the ability to appear grey in most pictures. If it helps at all, the Detachment leader of the BHG said it's spot on, and some pics from RICC show the blue. See this post:

Got my flightsuit! After some tailoring, I  put it on with my Deathwatch boots:

I realize it looks grey, but it is blue, and I tried to prove it:

Wow yeah that flightsuit looks great.

I recommend applying here with the innacurate sidearm. We've passed it before because it's still kinda common in the community.

You really want an incomplete costume in this club?  Aren't your standards a little higher than that?

I don't understand your opposition here, Naglium. Would I rather have an applicant apply with a sidearm than without a sidearm at all? Yes, I would.

If he's going for a Canon movie costume, I would hope you would want it to be complete and not missing pieces.

It's not like it's a nintendo zapper or anything right?

It stays in the holster almost always.  Most people don't even realize Fett has a sidearm.

For the record, Naglium, I totally understand your concerns. That being said, I don't think allowing a variation of the sidearm (one that looks extremely similar to the screen used one when holstered) is a major concession to movie accuracy.  Sure, in a perfect world, all Fett costumers would strictly adhere to canon. You show me 1 Fett that is 100% movie accurate and I'll show you 100 who aren't in any number of ways.  At a certain point, we have to think about what sort of deviations from the movie we are and are not willing to accept when considering what factors really capture the look of the character.  The sidearm is one area that I am willing to make a small compromise on, especially if it's the sidearm that was the standard in the Fett community up until very recently.  I don't equate using this sidearm with having an "incomplete" costume just as I wouldn't fault someone who didn't have a dental file on their jetpack or someone who didn't wear the scuba harness or someone who wears a duck cloth cape.  These are all deviations from movie canon, but they are deviations that are acceptable because while the materials used to make them may not be completely accurate or something may be different or missing, they maintain and do not detract from the iconic "Fett" look.

If you think I'm very wrong and you would like to see that policy changed, I encourage you to PM Seugtai (http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=3542) with you concerns.  We actively discuss all CRL concerns and community involvement is how things like this get changed.

I'm sure it was gonna be the orange Kenner Han blaster from the 90s... I mean, clearly he hasn't paid attention to detail at all here.... The costume is just... I'll take care of it for you, so you don't have to worry about it... you have my address just ship it whenever ;P
For real though, anyone who tackles a Canon costume earns my respect. no exception here. bravo
