Title: Ronan's Legacy Armor !!Approved pics on page 6!!
Post by: Ronan on Apr 23, 2014, 10:24 AM
I decided to try to build some legacy armor.  I'm a big guy so it seemed a good fit.  I used the template on here and added a few inches on the sides.  I plan to be a Shock Infantry

I love Legacy! I'm just not an expert at it since my kit is a hybrid Modern/Legacy. I'm building full Legacy plates for my cousin, though, so I'll keep an eye out on what you're up to.  :P

Not that i think you can't cut it out, but the shaping of the plates is what worries me.
I look forward to your progress

I actually already shaped them it was really easy.  I was just waiting till I got pics to mention it.  I cranked my oven to broil and popped them in for 15-20 secs on a cookie sheet.  Then shaped them and put them in the freezer.  They really hold shape well.

Have you thought about how you're going to attach it? Are you going to glue the plates together? Or are you going to make it flexible? Personally flexible is my choice, gluing makes it hard to bend over, and move.

I would form those plates a little tighter against your chest, and trim a little off the collar plates, the template (in my opinion should really be more at a slight angle, like the Drake style... It tends to fit a little better.

Are you going to have a floating diamond? Or use a plate to line the back of the chest plates, filling in the diamond hole?

As for CRLs, it's basically modern, so you will need a vest... Over all looks good.
Title: Re: Ronan's Legacy Armor
Post by: Ronan on May 13, 2014, 10:17 AM
I was thinking of attaching them with rivets and webbing.  I will leave a very slight gap between them.  Trimming the collar is on my list, I want it all to fit together nicely.   I also need to trim the sides so they all match up nicely.  I'm going to make a flack vest for it and then velcro behind the plates.  The Diamond I will fill in and have a very slight gap like the plates.  Maybe even a LED diamond.

I plan on doing a back plate in the same overall shape as the front, just one piece, no sections.

The overall feel of mine is a walking tank.

Most don't leave a gap between the plates, legacy is more of a overlapping style - not saying you have to, but with the small amount of overlapping it makes it so you can move a little better. I can post pictures if you would like to see them.

Looks like you got it planned out, just putting my $.02 out there... I've made a number of legacy kits and tutorials; I've done a little bit of everything concerning assembly...

Legacy chestplates are independent, but abutted.  You can do a uniboob plate, but they look better separated.  The ab plates do overlap, though, so you're on track with that.

Go ahead and run with the bolt-and-strap method.  I welded mine together on the backside, and while the stability is fantastic, the lack of flexibility makes it slightly cumbersome.  Not horribly so, mind you, but if I had to do it again, I'd keep them separate.

Actually I'd love to see them.  Some reference pics I saw look like they are abutted, some look over lapping.  So I wasn't sure.

@Cin Vhe'rang - I do think I might change the uniboob to separate.   I was just thinking about doing that earlier, but my saw was dead.

This is my nephew's plates, they are half the size of an adult, so keep that in mind.

Collapsed

I do the same with the back plates I make, so here is an adult sized version:
(http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss3/zipper_stich/DSCN5752_zpsd5886d5b.jpg) (http://s556.photobucket.com/user/zipper_stich/media/DSCN5752_zpsd5886d5b.jpg.html)

Collapsed

My nephew's was one of the first legacies I assembled, and I have since figured out that if you extend the top layer a little more, it will completely collapse onto itself, making it the width of the chest plates. I wrote a tutorial on how I assemble armor, it's posted here (http://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=68034.msg1027236#msg1027236). I know it shows the Drake style, it works well with either style.

if you look in my thread "Tavic Legacy Assassin" I think i got pics of my armor fitted already. I used glue and webbing. lots of webbing. you'll want all the flexibilty you can get in this thing, trust me.

As per the approval team, the lower plates do have to overlap. We just had two different mercs in krayt get denied due to not having them overlap.

Keep it up Vod, you're off to a great start

Have they giving them and written guidelines?  I've been poking around everywhere and haven't found them.
I made the bottom plates overlap and the top plates are butted based on some others I've seen.
I've started painting The red is a lot more bright, just crappy lighting

For colors I'm thinking Red with some type of white stripe and black flight suit.

This is what gave me the idea.  It's by oneone1111 over on the dented helmet

It may not be specified to the letter, but when it says to look at references for guidance, no reference has the plates abutted. (With the exception of the two breast plates) everything is layered.

Added velcro to my flack vest and tried on my armor.  Also added snaps for the shoulders.  Flight suit hopefully will be here before the weekend.

Awesome kit brother, I love legacy kits when they really just WORK.

You don't really want velcro on your vest with Legacy, as Echo (Cin, now, i think?) was trying to say.  Maybe on the top of the shoulders, and at the lowest segment, just to hold everything in a constant place.  If you use the strapping method, too much velcro will cancel out the awesome "bendiness".  Are your shoulders riding under the collar?  You'll want to address that.

This is a great kit, and neither of what I pointed out are in the least bit serious.  Looking forward to more!

Thanks for the advise.  I was actually debating having the shoulders above or below.  I think Im going to trim the collar  a bit and have them sit even to each other.  The velcro is only on the top pieces and the very bottom one.  So it still have a hanging feel to it, but also stays mostly in place.

I did the thighs, shins & forearms.  Some things I still want to change.
- Adjust placement of shins & thighs (possibly ditch the straps and use snaps/velcro)
- Move the shoulder pieces down a couple inches.
- Trim armor piece around neck
- Trim & hem flack vest
- Maybe make full bracers or do something different

Still to do
- Finish helmet (just doing a basic scratch built Fett)
- Cape & loincloth
- Boot covering
- Finish weapons & make holsters
- Finish paint job & weathering

Ordered parts
- Gloves & Ammo belt should be here this week

lookin good man.  Maybe those shoulders just look a bit small on you.  I know they work fine, but I think they would look really awesome if you beefed 'em up a bit.

I didn't see a girth belt on your 'to-do' list.  Make sure you add one, in addition to the ammo belt.  They really help to fill the dead space, especially useful for bigger dudes like us.

Yeah, I might mess with the shoulders.  I'm not 100% happy with them.  Depends on how much else I get done.  I might add that to my upgrade list after I get this approved.  We have a con next month, so trying to get enough done to get approved by then.

I will think about that girth belt too.  Didn't think about having that and a ammo belt, but might be easy to make and look better.  Here is the ammo belt I ordered. (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41gk53wbpoL._SY450_.jpg)

Still to do:
- Add a few more straps & velcro
- Replace the ammo belt
- Make holsters
- Add diamond
- Finish helmet
- Make spats
- Make bracers (see below)

Started my bracers.

I like those shoulders.

Move up the girth a little.  a lot of bigger guys like to overlap their ab plate with the girth belt or sash.

That's a really popular ammo belt these days.  They didn't offer that tan yet when I got mine.

I was talking to a buddy today and he pointed that out too.  I never noticed that is how people wear a girth belt.  In the pic I had in like a regular belt.  Going to try that tonight see how it fits.

Cross referencing with earlier pics of where the thighs are sitting, the cod looks to be way too low. Pull it up and then sit the girth and ammo belt over the top of the cod and ab plates. Should also pull the ab plates into you as they seem to be sticking out a little at the bottom at the moment.

Also, most people are photobombed by cats or dogs not little toy cars :P

I got both, you can see my kitty on the bottom left ;)  Yeah I adjusted the girth belt to put it around the last plate last night.  Looks a lot better.  I have to play with the cod (yes that sounds bad) a bit.  I have it hanging from my belt on my actual pants.  Going to look at other ways to attach it and even make it smaller.

It looks to me like your chest and middle ab plate need to be shaped to be a bit more close to your body.  otherwise it pretty good to me, any other angles?
Title: Re: Ronan's Legacy Armor
Post by: Kol Hokan on Sep 01, 2014, 04:51 PM
Looking great! I'm really liking the weathering on these colors.  I concur with Jorad, that middle ab plate is wonky.  I'm pretty sure it's because your lowest ab plate is being held in place by your girth belt and it's bringing that one plate in too tight.  I'd suggest revisiting the shaping of your ab plates and get them to really wrap around you close, that way when your girth belt brings them in, they don't flex out like they did in your pic.  One more thing, make sure you weather your soft goods to match - it'll take your kit to the whole next level.  Great work!

Great lookin kit there Ronan. I am with the above posts, and I think it is being caused by the girthbelt situation.

I'm sure i'll get a chance to see it in person this week, so we'll take another look at it then. But it does look like your chest/ab plates could be formed a little closer to your actual body.

Keep at it ner'vod, you're dang close now

Daym, I love the shape of those plates. Looks like you've just got a few corners that need a little more bending in to your body and that part will be done. The lower outer edges of the breast plate and the small lames on the sleeve are the bits that I noticed. And you may want to shorten the backplate for ease of movement. But yeah, your last set was looking good, this is even better.

I've been asked a couple times about templates. I'll see if i can make a set for download.

Here is the set for download.  I made them to fit me and i'm 5-10 with a big head and gut, so you may have to adjust them accordingly.

This is really shaping up!

And, if I had a nickel for all the times that a Krayt Clan member has made something that the rest of the club wanted to get their hands on, i'd be very rich ;)

You will be joining the ranks of Krayt Clan very soon. Thank you for carrying on the tradition of Krayt Clan members setting the standard for quality and kicking -censored- in armor.

Legs look a bit baggy

That's because I'm a bit baggy ;)

I like the armor!  Paint looks good and it seems to be fitted well.

I agree with Niabi about the sleeves and especially the legs.  You've got some bunching around the thigh plates and knees.  It could just be the fitting ad the way your standing, but you can also cover that up some with a kama to cover your rear end and the back of your legs.  If you did it in the same cloth/color as the loin, it would look great.

You're close!

This is some fantastic work, and I'm pleased to read that you didn't get frustrated!

I think your sleeves are pretty good, but those legs are still a bit baggy. I would definitely bring them in. Keep going, vod. You're almost there!

Yeah, your legs are the only thing I see.  I'm noticing the knee area more than anything, in your pics you can see the right leg kind of floping over the knee/shin plate.  Other than that it's a great build and looks amazing
Title: Re: Ronan's Legacy Armor
Post by: Ronan on Oct 05, 2014, 02:25 AM
Thanks guys, yeah the pants do look slightly baggy.  They don't seem that bad when I'm wearing them.  Plus me being a bigger guy, I'm not sure how much more form fitting ones would effect my movement.  If it gets kicked back it won't be a bad thing, I can get try to get some new pants and do a little bit different plate attachment on them.  If it gets accepted, it will be part of my first upgrades anyway.

I think you've done a great job on this kit.

Your chest armor and paint job look awesome.

I also think your legs look a little baggy and you can see some bunching around the thighs and ankles.

What I suggest is that you make your shin/knee armor a little wider so that they wrap around to the sides of each of your legs for a 3/4 effect.  Yes, I know that means cutting a bunch of new plates, but that would hide some of the excess material from your flightsuit.

Have you submitted your app yet?
Title: Re: Ronan's Legacy Armor
Post by: Ronan on Oct 05, 2014, 03:06 PM
That's something a friend and I were talking about too is the shins. They might be too short. Eventually I will redo them with my arms.  Make them more 3/4 around and longer. So I did submit and figured if it gets kicked back for things like that I'll just redo them sooner.

Ok got a response back.  Nothing that I wasn't expecting or should have thought of

 - The loin cloth (both sides) needs to be weathered as your kit is weathered and it will balance out the weathering on your armor.
Yep should have thought about this, easy fix
- Your flight suit with your legs is baggy. Either tailoring or better tucking will fix this.
Actually looked and saw that these are "relaxed fit" so ordered regular fit.  Should be here this week
- Your shins are way too high, and because the are not shinees they need to come down.
They actually are shinees, but I have thought they are too small, I'm halfway done with new bigger ones already.
- You will need knee armor with your armor.
    See above
- Your vest is poking out under your ab armor; just tuck it better and have it hemmed so it does flap around below the plates.
Going to add my girth belt back, just wear it under my armor
**Suggestion** For your half gauntlets add another half; it will improve the overall look of them.
Did have full ones, but they were too tight.  This is the next thing on my list for my MK4 (I submitted my MK2 and MK3 is almost done it will also replace all webbing with leather including utility/ammo belt)

You've come along way and got a solid kit going here.
On a minor note... I think you need some ankle armor or something. You got like no gap from thighs to knees, but a big gap from boots to shins. That's probably the only thing that stands out to me. As a whole the kit is fantastic though.
Ps I like the berserker brigade you proposed. I wanna see that happen.

That's not a bad idea.  I need to redo my boot plates anyway (one broke) so maybe I'll look at adding more there too.
