Title: Renn Tel jetpack wip
Post by: Renn on May 19, 2014, 02:15 PM
So I probly jumped the gun a little... dont have much of my kit done. but I love a challenge, and, I want a jetpack. still needs resined and rondo'd. Here's what I have so far. roughly 21 hours of cutting and assembly.   (http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a573/josh_dyer1/NCM_0078_zps1e181236.jpg)   (http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a573/josh_dyer1/NCM_0082_zps5c767fee.jpg)   only had 3 pieces left over, 2 that i just couldnt find where they went, and one is the reason the right side cap is shorter than the left.  more to come...

Glue is the best substance that I have found to use with pep files.

is this your first project?

First with pepakura. used WOF file for my helmet and gauntlet, but going to rebuild the gauntlet. still learning  :D

I've found superglue to be the best for pep, it dries fast, and when you apply the resin, it soaks into the paper, making it stronger.

thank you for the helpful advise. next build will be with the glue. now hopefully i dont glue my fingers together lol.  :D

I've taped the back side previously with mild success. Super glue is your best bet. Also, looks pretty good. Hopefully you finish it! I see many pep builds go south after the paper assembly.

i have started the resin. using fiberglass mat to reinforce everything. top is almost done. Looks good so far. trying to restrain myself and work in sections.

I used fiberglass resin and Rondo on the outside of my pep arena pack. The used filler foam on the inside.

It was your jetpack wip that inspired me to build mine. I built a small inner suppor system with foam board, but was thinking of using the foam to fill it. I got the back resin'd today.

Nice to see another pep pack. My z-6 build is at the tipping point of completion. Just careful how much rondo you use. I used probably twice as much as I should have because I wanted it super sturdy and I payed for it in weight.

I am ready for rondo, I have kind of put this a side to work on armor, and soft parts hoping to get get back to work on my pack soon.

I am trying to get back to finishing this jetpack, have resin applied and sanding done. I think it is turning out decent. be awesome to strap a jetpack to my kit. when I complete my kit.  ;D  that is. dont think the sanding I have done, is done in this picture, (http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a573/josh_dyer1/NCM_0129_zps488f3b6d.jpg)

good luck on your gauntlets avidem, be patient and they will turn out great. I gave ones I made , and the helmet I was almost finished with. to my younger brother, who is starting a kit, so I am back to square one on my gauntlets and helmet.

This is what I use when I pep. It's flexible as opposed to super glue which can be brittle and if you need to open pieces up to adjust them it's also much easier then supper glue. Just another option. ;)

The jet pack is coming along nicely, great job! 8)

will have to try that on my next pep build.  super glue is a pain at times. especially when readjusting pieces. being new to building I am up for all options.

I found that the tacky glue works well and also hot glue if you have a good gun with a fine nozzle (and you don't mind the occasional burn) both allow you more freedom to play with and adjust parts to your liking.

   hope to have my helmet done this week, then I will get back to this, trying to plan this pack build out so I can make the thrusters and rocket removable and have an access port in the back for storage.

Post by: Renn on Aug 31, 2014, 08:48 PM
finally getting back to my jetpack. decided since I had the arena started and near complete, I would just modify it to a z-6. still working out some of the smaller details. . but going to put an access panel on the back to remove the thrusters and rocket for storage and travel. use pvc for the thruster mounts and a dowel or pvc through the rocket to mount somehow inside the pack. first things first had to do some choping. I just finished my "Stubby" (from pepakura printouts). I think the jetpack is the most time consuming and labor intensive piece to work on. Keep plugging away and you'll get it finished.

Since you have the back open now, you may want to do a layer of resin and fiberglass matting, unless the Bondo outer layer is sturdy enough.

Side note for any future builds... card stock is a lot easier to work with than regular printer paper. I think 50 sheets ran me about $8 at Hobby Lobby. Use some Elmer's glue and it will keep its form really well when putting it all together.

Keep up the good work. :)

inside has been resined with 2 coats will prob coat one more time I am not too worried about it though the exterior is very solid many many coats of resin and two layers of fiberglass mat and rondo.  :D  maybe a little over board but I is solid.                                                                            ..cardstock is deffenetly the way to go, I learned that after building this pack. been using it ever since.  I used superglue on my pep helmet. Agreed jet pack is the most time consuming.  Hopefully in a month this will be complete, now that my helmet is done

been working on my harness. bought an $8 belt and had couple guitar straps laying around. works pretty well, I will have to make some new hooks for my jetpack, but these will suffice for now.  (http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a573/josh_dyer1/GEDC1195_zpsirltikpj.jpg) (http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a573/josh_dyer1/GEDC1197_zpskn0anbtp.jpg)  wore the jetpack for about 15 min to take few pics and it had started to sag about a couple  inchs, I will have to adjust for that (http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a573/josh_dyer1/GEDC1202_zpsdsgxms0s.jpg) I have to figure a way on securing it on the bottom of the jetpack so it doesn't move side to side

I am going to have to do some mods to my harness. over all the harness did its job jetpack stayed on my back all day, but  jetpack kept sliding  further and further down as the day went on.   (http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a573/josh_dyer1/11053484_10204039986059255_4455703602437532023_o%201%20-%20Edited_zpsh7t7shbx.jpg)

Mine does the same. The pack stays on no problem but i get saggy jetpack syndrome (SJS).

I was looking on the dented helmet, i think im going to rig me up a "seeker harness" where the straps are sewn into a mini man bra vest.

I have reconfigured mine a little, shorted all my straps. going to be trooping tomorrow for a bit. so see how it goes if this doesn't fix it. I am going for a new design.
