Title: Kavryn's Hurty Things WIP: Updated 11/2/15
Post by: Kavryn Falco on Sep 23, 2014, 11:28 PM
Edit 11/9/15: I just noticed that my photos have begun to disappear. I tried to catch and replace the disappeared ones, but a few may have slipped through the cracks. Just FYI :-\

Yep, I got a few of these in various states of incompletion.

Paint last few claws
Paint bes'bev

How will you attach the very hurty looking hurty bits to the gloves?
Title: Re: Kavryn's Hurty Things WIP
Post by: Kavryn Falco on Sep 26, 2014, 10:15 PM
Superglue was suggested to me as a method of attachment, and that's what I was leaning towards.  Barges leather adhesive was also mentioned, but he said he didn't know how well it'd work with plastic.  I think that I want to find another leather thing that I can ruin, and try different types of adhesive and beat it up pretty good - I don't want to ruin my nice gloves.

Try some E6000. The stuff can glue literally anything.

I second the E6000. I usually use CA Glue but for areas that will have a lot of flex I think the 6000 will be your best bet.

All righty, I'll pick some up at Walmart then.  One can never have too many kinds of glues  ;D

Make sure to get the industrial stuff if you can.

Your hurty things look cool. The conversion on the gun looks like it's going to turn into something very cool

Thanks vod!  I sure hope so.

Aside from getting the last few finger plates silvered, I haven't really done too much work on any of these.  Been doing work, just not on the hurty things.  I'll post as soon as I have something substantial, though.
Title: Re: Kavryn's Hurty Things WIP
Post by: Kal'Marev on Oct 14, 2014, 10:12 AM
I used hot glue for my finger and hand plates, that way during a con if they start to come off a bit just heat it up carefully with a lighter and we're good to go again in seconds.
Title: Re: Kavryn's Hurty Things WIP
Post by: Kavryn Falco on Oct 14, 2014, 11:07 AM
Not a terrible idea.  What material are your gloves made out of? I'm wonder if hot glue sticks to leather?

I've also heard that a bottle of superglue is one of those con can't-go-withouts
Title: Re: Kavryn's Hurty Things WIP
Post by: Thoranios Xast'or on Oct 14, 2014, 11:13 AM
E6000 sticks to anything. And there will be no need for an emergency reheat and stick. Avoid hot glue on anything that moves excessively, and I would include gloves in this.

Yeah, I had already bought the e6000 to use on my gloves. I just like to gather information  ;D

Update time whoo!

Worked on splodey things:

-Bought "sonic distractors" - sanded writing, bondoed cheesyfake screw holes.  Next up: Bondo coat #2
-Made splodeys out of PVC plumbing bits and a McDonald's Transformers toy.  Next up: Glue a mounting point on the back, then paint.

Worked on bes'bev:

Turns out my PVC pipe is EXACTLY the same diameter as a nickel.  So yeah, that happened.

Worked on shooty:

About halfway through templating covers for the chopped-off bits on the top.  Also sanded some of the PVC bits for barrel/scope, but that's boring so you don't get pics  :P

Also did a leetle bit of work on stabby, but nothing really picture-worthy.

Yes he does have them. I like the pvc pipe grenades as long as some event security doesn't get overzealous and think they are real.
Title: Re: Kavryn's Hurty Things WIP
Post by: Kavryn Falco on Oct 19, 2014, 09:11 PM
Eh, they're tiny - probably 4" long at the most.  I'm hoping people won't immediately ID them as PVC by the time I'm done with them - and I'll have a pretty full belt, too, so it's not like they're gonna be lonely.

They look good so far. May even build myself a couple. Got lots of pvc pipes around for stuff.

Do it!  Be prepared for an awful lot of sanding, though.  PVC's got all sorts of ridges and lines and mold seams all over it.

I usually painted over pvc with no sanding. My sniper rifle barrel and stock is pvc. My jetpack WIP frame. The legs and frame for my gun rack. My gatling gun quad barrel.

Little bit of light sanding even with 220 grit helps give the paint a little something extra to hold onto.

Thanks to Peregrinus for the image xD

So yeah, I haven't been working on this at all since fall.  I started up again these past two weeks, and here's where I'm at.  I do believe that some of this progress was from before my winter hiatus, but I just haven't posted it yet.  Anyway, here we are:

Stabby!  Stabby is just about ready to paint, I think.  I gotta give it a once-over with bondo glaze (that stuff is glorious) but after that we should be golden.

Me bes'bev is 90% done now.  Need to 1) touch up the silver where it ran a bit, 2) paint a few detail rings in crimson to match my armor, 3) attach the bead/feather/clip string, and, of course, 4) weather/blackwash.  At this rate it could be the first thing on my kit that I actually finish! Haha! ha. ):

PVC splodeys.  Took 2-part epoxy and glued two chain rings to it; gonna use a clip on my belt to hold 'em on. Not... 100% sure the epoxy's gonna hold.  May need to remove and use e6000 instead?  Not sure, we'll see how it cures overnight.

Don't have any pics of my sonic distractor splodeys; they're primered right now.  Gotta paint both my splodeys black and then use a silver drybrush for the high points.

I... like my shooty, rather a lot, but I'm going to shelve it for now and focus on finishing these things.  Since having a gun isn't required for OM, just a weapon, I think what I have will pass muster well enough.  I do plan on finishing it, I'm just going to prioritize other things for now.

While having a Gun isn't required, it is highly suggested and the app team likes to see it, even if it is just a pistol.

Post by: Kavryn Falco on May 18, 2015, 11:39 PM
Huh, ok.  Well, like I said, I'm still planning on finishing it, I'm just going to focus on other things for the moment.   I got a bit stuck on the plating to cover the holes I chopped into it, and I want to be able to give it the time it deserves.

Been three weeks and have I got an update for you =D

100% Complete: Splodeys Model I:

Here's my attachment method. I epoxied the chain on, and the latch is from a $1 lanyard from Walmart sewn into a beltloop made from my pleather.  Super simple, easy to remove if I want to, won't fall off accidentally.

100% Complete: Splodeys Model II:
And yes, they do still light up and make "sonic distractor" noises =D

100% Complete: Besbev (Henceforth known as "Noisy" because I can't music lol)
Really, really pleased with how Noisy here came out.  Again, $1 lanyard from Walmart saves the day. Also, button epoxied to the end = perfect stringholder  ;D

100% Complete: Stabby
(http://i.imgur.com/KrogrsZ.jpg)
Yup, he sure is stabby.  The "miniaturized vibro-emitter dishes" on the sides are actually chapstick ends - you know, the ones you twist to get more out.  They're actually perfect, haha!

30% Progress: Shooty
(http://i.imgur.com/IyiJdbm.jpg)
Got the plating cut out.  Got the scope glued together and the barrel parts lined up correctly. Still have to:

-install weight in hilt
-glue barrel in place
-reseal everything, screws back in place
-bondo screw holes, sand seam
-heatform plating to gun's new shape, attach
-bondo plating to integrate
-attach hanger holster (on opposite side than picture.  Am actually not left-handed, haha.)
-attach scope
-paint & weather

So with alla that said, my question for you paint-lotsa-guns types is this: when should I paint the trigger? At the end, after everything's all put back together? Separately, then protect it from the new paintjob at the end? Once in the beginning and again with the whole gun? Something else entirely? Inquiring minds want to know D:

Paint the trigger when ever you feel like painting the trigger, before, during, after, when ever.  I like the shooty thing, and the method for attaching the shooty thing to you, clever.

Looking good!

Tip for the splodies.... Take a DRY fine grit sanding sponge and go over the weathering a bit. Some of the damage looks like obvious brush strokes and hitting them with the sanding sponge will help get rid of the strokes and make the weathering look more realistic.  :D

Post by: Jasand on Jun 12, 2015, 11:59 AM

Late to the party, but when I mod NERF guns, I paint the trigger separately while everything is still taken apart.  And depending on the build, I paint other bits, too.  Undercuts and moving parts are a bit easier that way.  I don't necessarily weather them at that stage, but get the base coats on.  If I'm worried about the paint job on the bits, I mask them while I paint the rest.  If I'm not, I don't.  I generally paint my triggers black and call it a day, since my finger will likely be covering it most of the time.

Does that make any sort of sense?

Updates on my shooty thing!

Lessee, since I last posted here I have:

-glued barrel and scope (not pictured)
-filled trigger
-painted barrel, trigger, & undercuts
-epoxied everything shut & replaced screws
-weighted the hilt so it hefts better
-attached plating to cover holes
-filled screw holes and other unwanted bits
-applied a ton of bondo

And once again I'm at the bondo-sand-bondo-sand cycle of building. My favorite part   Once I'm done with the body work I'll need to figure out how I'm planning on attaching the scope, and then we'll be golden!

Shooty thing!

So, this was the paintjob for NYCC. Had to have a brightly colored tip so they wouldn't confiscate it, so I put a good coating of Traffic Cone Orange on the tip. I HATED it. -shudder-
(http://i.imgur.com/ndTHGnJ.jpg)
So I scraped the ugly-shebs paint off, repainted it, and made a removable safety tip ;D

That is an ingenious hanger system for 'shooty'.  Solid design, and I'm sure it'll last a long time however I would have painted it as well.  I'm personally still going to use holsters that I'll make, but kudos.  Also, the orange safety tip - how often have you seen that as a requirement at cons?  I'm wondering if that's a pretty usual practice, or are they more prone to have you attach those silly flexible bands to denote con approved weaponry?

Yeah, if I'd thought of it beforehand, I'd have built swappable tips into the gun itself - one orange, one regular. But I didn't, so this was the best I could do  :(  I thought I'd be fine with the orange on the tip, but it's just so obvious.
Title: Re: Kavryn's Hurty Things WIP: Updates on page #4
Post by: Kalska Nubu on Oct 18, 2015, 10:19 AM
I believe it's exclusive to big cons like NYCC.  Wasn't able to attend last DragonCon, but I don't remember that being a requirement even there.  I can see why they make people do that, but its dumb.  I would just use orange tape, if that were allowed.
Title: Re: Kavryn's Hurty Things WIP: Updates on page #4
Post by: Jorad Werde on Oct 18, 2015, 11:11 AM
The orange tip rule depends on where you are, some states require it, some places dont.  I have a roll of Orange Electrical tape in my kit repair bag in case I am somewhere that requires it.  Others have orange tip inserts made for their weapons so they can put them in and remove them as needed.
Title: Re: Kavryn's Hurty Things WIP: Updates on page #4
Post by: Kavryn Falco on Oct 18, 2015, 12:08 PM
Yeah NYCC is stupid restrictive. No wood or hard plastic props at all, no moving triggers, etc. I left my dagger behind, 'cause I knew they'd confiscate it, and they almost took my shooty even with the painted barrel.

NYCC is dumb.
Title: Re: Kavryn's Hurty Things WIP: Updates on page #4
Post by: Jasand on Oct 19, 2015, 12:38 PM
Yes it is.  I had a solid rubber training pistol (the kind you'd use in hand-to-hand classes to practice disarming an armed assailant).  No trigger, no moving parts.  Bright red/orange tip.  Bendy.  And the jerk at the gate made a big deal of inspecting it and threatened to take it away.

Fortunately my cold, blank "I will kill you" stare is enhanced by freaky Harley Quinn make-up. . .

Love the new weapons.  I want to see that knife all painted up and deadly looking.  :). Is it sintra?

Thanks vode  ;D

Yep, 6mm sintra (or rather, two layered 3mm sheets). The line in the center  helps keep all the edges even when I'm sanding down the blade  ;D (also I don't have any solid 6mm, haha)

Damn, I'm glad I found this thread.

I'm that green/brown Mando that you saw at NYCC, and I just wanted to say you kit is superb. I love what you did with your props, and it was great getting to see everything in person.

Worked on my bowcaster! Removed chintzy scope, replaced barrel & arms.  Gotta add the balls, mount a new scope, add mounting points, do body work, and paint.
