Title: Dee Ca'tra -- Mando Mechanic
Post by: corriban on Jan 27, 2015, 12:53 PM
So, I realize that I only just made official yesterday, but since I submitted my app this past week the only thing I've been thinking about is my next build. I fell in love with the concept of a mechanic in the hopes of going brigade, so I started accumulating resources and lists of all the things I'd need.

Here's a rough concept of what I'm looking to do:

The helmet I'm eventually going to get is The Stalker by NME because it's so damn beautiful and I've been drooling over it ever since I saw it. I'm up in the air on color scheme. I really want a black kit and feel it would fit in with a mechanic build. I also want to incorporate purple and gold as well. The segmented collar plate is based around Sabine from the Rebels series. I haven't decided yet if I want to do a full back plate or a 3/4 one with a jetpack or something. For simplicity I may just do a simple backplate. Already dreading that part...

I started working on her tools. For the two I have, I want to add a couple more little things to them, then I'll fill some holes and start painting.

Fusion cutter on the left, Hydrospanner on the right.

I also got a pouch from Lowes that will need some love too.

I'm planning on giving her a gauntlet calculator with a cord and "disk" that can pull off of it that she can plug in to use for "hacking" and stuff. I'll probably make a couple more random tools too, gonna look around the Star Wars wiki for some good ones.

As far as a weapon is concerned, I want to do a carbine of some sort. Something she can sling behind her easily. I've found some good potentials in the Nerf section of Toys R' Us.

Feedback is always appreciated!

Nice concept! Mechanic kits have lots of potential for awesomeness ;) That fusion-cutter is brilliant 8)

Carry on ;D

So I'm really struggling with color scheme. There isn't one that I'm completely in love with. I really don't want another "black and gray" mando, even though I really love those colors. I want to embrace the "mechanic" aspect of this character. Red, gold, silver, black...

I'm also torn on a helmet. I love the Stalker, it's beyond beautiful, but again, that to me says heavy infantry, not mechanic. So I think I will more or less go for a simple helmet, possibly a Jango style, and add a visor cover to it.

Anyway, here are two color schemes I've been kicking around. Still not 100% about either.

Leaning more toward the purple, but would love to hear some input.

purple looks good, the black and yellow is a little to flat for me.

Yeah, I really think I'm gonna do the purple and silver. The silver will be high gloss, not like gray or anything.

Yup, of the the two, I'd go with the Purple one :D

Purple and silver definitely :). Can't wait to see how this turns out :)

I bought a couple things from IOA yesterday, my knees and the calc pad for my soon-to-be left gauntlet.

And I've decided on not doing the Stalker for this build. I'm instead going to buy a simple Boba-style one from Headshot Props.

The Grunt
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v252/desty/il_570xN_701308675_kohb_zps3bf2eb86.jpg)

I like the little details on it, and I'll be doing the earcaps on this build too.

One of my buddies just got the grunt from HSP. Pretty solid looking helmet.

Text and a picture update:

I bought my helmet from Headshot Props, the Grunt, which I'm super excited to get and work on. Also have an awesome Boba Fett carbine on the way that I snagged off ebay for less than $40. I've always wanted one and since this kit won't use any pistols, I wanted something still intimidating but easily carried and slung over her back if need be.

For those curious/unfamiliar, this is the one I bought:

Another text update:

- I got my cod in the mail from the lovely Nix!
- Helmet has been shipped from Headshot Props so I should be getting that shortly (hopefully this week before I leave for vacation)
- Purchased my chest plates from Mandalorian Arsenal so those will be arriving in a couple weeks

Need to buy my vest and figure out what I wanna do about my back plate or if I want one. It's a bit of a daunting task and I've heard a lot of horror stories about how difficult they are to make. We'll see!

Updates!

Last week I got my helmet in the mail and yesterday I trimmed up the bottom of it.

Today I'm gonna see if there's any daylight left to finish up the visor and vents.

While I was trimming I got a surprise knock on the door from the postman bringing me the bulk of my armor!

From The Mandalorian Arsenal. The pieces are really well constructed. They'll need some trimming too :)

Here's a closeup of my cod from the wonderful Nix:

Lots of work ahead of me! Still gotta decide on a back plate or cape and need to get my gauntlets as well.

If your still debating colors think about going highvisibility yellow, green, or orange  With a grey or blue primary.  It might glow in the dark but that's what the mechanics wear now a days.

I've made a lot of progress lately! Got all my plates trimmed including my helmet. I started laying down the paint a couple days ago. I'm up to the black layer and first layer of weathering. This time around it'll be more subtle. She's mostly gonna be dirty, like oil stains and scrapes here and there. Doesn't look like much now, but when I get the purple down it'll look a lot better!

Here are the paints that are next up:

Little bit more progress.

I've chromed the shoulder bells since this photo and have started taping off the plates for the design. I went in a different direction for the design and decided not to do a border around the plates. It's too plain! Hoping to have more progress tonight.

I've also started to work on my carbine. I bondoed the screws and have to sand them down now. Then it'll be ready for paint! My vest has also been ordered. Attachment method I think I'm gonna go with screws or snaps. Screws seem a little bit easier in theory, but snaps may be more secure. I've started cutting out sintra for my gauntlets. I'll post progress pics later today.

Got the chrome design on last night and I think it looks really good! Not sure if I'm gonna continue the pattern down to my knee plates or not, but for the most part the purple is ready for black/brown wash. The shoulder bells I'm gonna do some sort of purple design. Maybe not matching what's on the chest plates, perhaps a sigil of some sort.

Gonna work on sanding the bondo on my gun today and get cracking on doing what I need to do for my tools and pouch.

I got more work done!

Helmet is primed and ready for weathering.

Gun is primed, black, and ready for the gun metal coat and wood grain on the stock. Here's a fun before and after:

Before

After

I also made headway on my tools. They need their final touches before I feel comfortable posting up pictures. I do have a question for anyone with any insight: my tool pouch has a logo on it that's been embroidered into the fabric and it's almost impossible to get it off. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to cover it? maybe just attach a new piece of fabric over the whole section and sew it into place? Any help is appreciated!

Double update (sorta)

Finished my carbine last night and my tools this morning. Still trying to figure out what to do about my pouch. I was going to work on my helmet today after work but it's raining today so I may switch over to working on my gauntlets. I'm attempting to make them myself out of sintra using my other kits gaunts as a guide. We'll see how they turn out!

Onto the pictures!

Hehe, it was a fluke really. I took brown and black acrylic paint and mixed it together. Then I took a sponge and splotched it on and then wiped it with a paper towel. I just kept doing that until it was covered and streaking the way I wanted it to :)

This is coming along great!  Do you want to have a holster for the E-33?  I figured out how to make one that works pretty good without being bulky.

Ooohh do you have any pictures? Right now I've got D-rings attached and am using a leather strap to sling it around my shoulders for easy access.

Started work on my gauntlets yesterday! They are more like vambraces, they don't fully wrap, only about 3/4 around. I like them because I have more movement. I plan on putting a few greeblies on them.

I also got my knees finished with their attachments. Simple velcro and elastic.

The helmet got a lot of work yesterday and by nights end it was black/brown washed. Didn't get a picture of it, unfortunately. All that's left is to get the visor and padding installed.

And here's the kit laid out with everything.

To Do: (in no particular order)
Helmet padding/visor
Dirty vest
Attach screws to plates & put on vest
Finish gauntlets
Hide pouch logo
Create Boba thong for cod
Black and brown wash plates

Sure do!  It's not a quick-draw holster (no way to do that without strapping a purse to your waist) but nothing in the world beats it if you need your hands free.
http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b535/pheonix-023/100_1763_zpsjbhiimew.jpg

the strap slips in between the scope and the barrel, and then tightens.  Here's a holstered shot.

If you want the pattern, just let me know :)  It should already be sized right, because you and I have the exact same gun.

I got soooo much done yesterday, but it really didn't feel like I did much. Looking back though, I knocked out most of the big things on my list. Here's the completed vest with chest plates and shoulder bells attached!

The kama and loin are from my first kit...not going to be used for this kit

Here's a pretty OK picture of most of the stuff on:

Selfie style so you can see the screws a bit:

And here's a 360 view of the helmet
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v252/desty/pic20150417205142_zpsehv6d8v1.jpg)

After some feedback from my clan, I think eventually I will get a darker vest, probably one that attaches on the side. This one was really fun to dirty up and get all "oily" ;D I'll also be making a new collar plate as this one is just slightly too small.

To Do:
Gauntlets
Pouch
Cod
Cape/Hood

Now, the cape/hood is only temporary so I can go troop this weekend. Eventually I'll get my backplate. Right now it's giving me grief and may not be finished in time for this weekend. I'm gonna keep chugging along and maybe, hopefully, we can get it done.

Little update: I got my pouch finished, my cod attached, and my temporary back covering which is a half cape thing that snaps underneath my collar plate.

Tonight I will either finish-- or get close to finishing --my gauntlets! Then the kit will be done! I already have plans for upgrading after the event on Saturday, which I will probably start on before then. I'm going to see if I can submit for official member status before I implement the upgrades, but ultimately I'd like to get my back plate done before I do that. Here are just a few of my ideas for upgrading:

back plate
full gaunts
new boots
new collar plate
double shoulder bells
left leg pouch
power calibrator
new vest

This may not be everything, but it's what I can remember off the top of my head...more updates later!

Finished my gauntlets last night!! Of course, I will be adding more things to them once I get more...things. Eventually I plan on adding a hacking disk that can be pulled from a datapad. This will be on the right gaunt. I'm thinking about using a PSP game disk cause I like the shape of them and then one of those retractable card holders. Anyway, here's a picture of them all dirtied!

Love the paint job. Everyone is really coming around to doing such great weathering! More women mandos! The only thing I see is that your ab plate may need to shift up on your vest. Little more space there than between your other plates. I also love the swagged cape in the back. Well done!

So my hubby took pictures at the event this past weekend. Overall, the kit is super comfortable to wear for long periods of time and nothing broke! Hooray! But I got some great feedback from my Alor'ad and Ruus'alor about some things I could improve, most of which I had planned for, which is great! Here are a few pictures from the event:

Loooks great, but the spacing on those plates look very big is there any way you can close in the spacing/extend the plates a bit to fill the gaps? like keep everything where it is but add a half inch to the centre of each chest plate and to the top of the ab?

*Edit*

Was thinking at the most basic something like this:

(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a530/Kitala_Enby/idea%20two_zpslqismtr3.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/Kitala_Enby/media/idea%20two_zpslqismtr3.jpg.html)

Something that would very basically close up the gaps around the chest and ab. just some sintra and bondo.

Something a bit more covering could be this:

(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a530/Kitala_Enby/idea%20one_zpsvdt7jzmq.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/Kitala_Enby/media/idea%20one_zpsvdt7jzmq.jpg.html)
*Extra Edit Anybody else kinda think that looks like a cat?*
which would also cover up the gaps around the collar,

or you could go to an extreme and mod the plates to be more standard modern style (though this would lose a lot of the bo katan look)

(http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a530/Kitala_Enby/idea%20three_zpsrakrtik0.jpg) (http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/Kitala_Enby/media/idea%20three_zpsrakrtik0.jpg.html)

Obviously this is just my opinion, and the app team don't seem as bothered by inconsistent spacing on bo katan plates as they are on modern (cause tbh the bo katan plates don't really line up much on bo herself) but it's something to think about.

Once you said it I had to make it a thing :3

Thank you for the feedback. It's definitely something I've thought about for the future. I think eventually these plates will get an overhaul.

so my last event, which was Free Comic Book Day, was the last time I'd worn this kit and about a week following I finished painting my secondary shoulder bells and back plate. But last night I picked it back up because I have another event this weekend! On FCBD I was having issues with one of my knee plates coming off so I had to do some maintenance on the velcro situation there and I figured why not get some of the other upgrades out of the way. I tackled attaching my other shoulder bells and here's the final product:

I'm leaning back a bit in this picture because the lighting is super weird in my bedroom, but they are on and even and look suuuuuuper cool. I've gotta get my back plate on today and we'll see where that lands me with getting pictures taken. Here's a couple pictures from the FCBD even in May:

More updates to come!

THREAD REVIVE!

So yesterday I decided to work a bit more on this kit so I can get it approved. I had a list of the things I want to accomplish ultimately with this before I submit for approval.

back plate
new girth
full gaunts
boot spats
left leg pouch
power calibrator

I've got my back plate finished and attached and it looks pretty sweet I must say! For my first try and with very little error, it was a success. I also completed my new girth belt.

I was playing around with the idea of making a tabbard because I wasn't completely in love with my cod. I also wanted to do a butt flap of sorts because...well, I don't like to be completely exposed :P This is what I've got so far:

Now I'm torn because I really love the look, but I don't know if it's too much fabric going on in the back with the half cape, especially since I do have coverage with the plate. Thoughts? Here's some pictures without the cape showing:

I got feedback from my clan about it and they think it's too much going on in the back. I kinda like it...maybe what I need to do is just put everything on and see how it works. But all thoughts and opinions are appreciated!

Next thing I'll be working on are my new gauntlets. It's been raining like crazy here with the hurricane rolling through so no painting can happen until that's all done.

I like the half cape, but that back-plate is sweet! It almost feels wrong to cover it up!  :P  What about changing it to a shoulder cape, so you get the best of both worlds?

The cape and back plate look rad! Have you thought of making the cape just cover the shoulder and be a hood instead?

Love the kit!

Oya vod!

I was thinking about that and it wouldn't hard to accomplish either!

I would consider a hood, but I plan on going brigade and I don't think it would fit into the mechanic mold, unfortunately.

In my opinion, it looks like too much fabric. I like both individually but together... Eh not so sure. So I think you should go with back plate/butt flap combo :D

Half cape might work better there than a full cape. Just get your hands oily in car/bike innards and then use the cape. Voila, instant mechanic hand towel :P

I'm gonna be switching up my plates here soon. I just ordered a legacy chest plate and collar and some gauntlets from Forge Props. I sketched out what the new plates would look like with my existing ab plate. I think I'll have to trim it to make it flat, but that's pretty easy.

I really want to sketch out a full concept idea with her new cape and kama situation. Still deciding if I want shin or thigh plates for her. Any input is much appreciated!

Another thread revive.

Updates on my mark 2 version. I got my vest from Sidi today and got my plates from Forge Props a few weeks ago. Need some opinions about the shape and how much to cut away. I've drawn some lines of what I think I'll do anyway but any feedback is welcome.

I had a thought to maybe cut away and round the corners so it comes under my boobs. Thoughts?

you should also consider taking about 1/8th of an inch off the sides of the chest plate, it seems JUST a little to wide right now

I'd bring the chest plate up about an inch and a half, overlap it over the collar as it's Legacy style and get rid of the sticking out that it's doing now. Mine sits with the ab plates starting at lower breast level and it actually works really well as the segmented ab can really follow the underboob shape so there's no need to worry about the breast plate pulling away from your body like it is now as you're trying to shape it over the top and the bottom of breasts.

This is exactly what I wanted to know. I will have to make a new ab plate and I always have problems with the chest pulling away at the top. I figured if it were up higher that would help. Thanks Kris!

You're welcome. I do the same even with Fett style plates. The top of my ab actually sits over breast and I segmented it to allow for the curve. So much easier than trying to shape a full cup.
Also forgot to say that the rest of your trim lines look to be exactly where I'd be putting them.

I was thinking I'd have to have the belly plate pretty close to my boobs, so it's nice to know that I'm going in the right direction. I appreciate it! I should be trimming the plates this weekend so I'll have more a final look for them.

THREAD REVIVE!!

Wow, over a year since this has been updated. Here we go!

I'm starting to get a bit bored with my main kit so I thought I'd come back to Dee and get her rolling on becoming official. First thing I needed were actual gauntlets. I've  been sitting on a pair from Forge Props for over a year and gave em' some much needed love and attention. Got them trimmed and cut and one of them is completely assembled but I ran out of hinges so I gotta pick up 2 more. Once the other is done I'll slap a bit of JB Weld over the hinges for extra security and they'll be ready for paint!

The next thing I'm still debating about is the new chest/collar plate and new vest. The vest is just a tad short on me, probably due to my error, so I don't think I'll be able to use it as it doesn't look like I can fit an ab plate on it realistically. I'm going to have to trim the chest plate first and reassess if it can be done. Otherwise, I will salvage my existing one, which should be doable if I can cover the screw holes  :-X

Once I'm comfortable with the upgrades and I put it all on for a test fit is when I'll decide whether to ditch the cape. While I really do like it, I think I like the "butt flap" (doesn't really constitute as a kama imo :P) a bit more and would like to keep it. Since I'm not entirely happy with the cod either, I have a loin attached, but if that ends up looking odd then I have a spare cod that I can use.

I think that's everything for right now... I'll be back with more updates!!

Yay, so awesome to see you back at it!!  If you're deciding between the chest plate styles, I'd vote for the night owl ones cause they look really good in the purple/chrome paint design  :D

So I had this idea come to me today that I wanted to see if it would be approvable. I like the idea of having a traditional flightsuit/jumpsuit, sorta like how X-Wing pilots do, but also hailing to car mechanics jumpsuits. My idea though was to wear it like this:

The top would cinch around the waist and act as a "kama" of sorts. I'd still wear the vest and plates and a long sleeve shirt so everything up top would be as it normally is, just the bottom would be more interesting but still functional. Thoughts?

It's an interesting idea, but I don't think it would pass app since the top and bottom of the flight suit have to look like one piece.

Yeah after I posted this I spoke with someone on the app team and was told just as much. Though I might use this for her casual wear :) Thanks Aria!

Maybe you can casually wear your mando with just your lower armor and flight suit open like that during tabling. So that you're still "in-character" while you're talking to people about how to build a Mando?

That's what I was thinking! Now to find a good flight suit :)
