Title: Dash Gnar WIP, Now OM with Endless Upgrades Planned
Post by: Gnar-Gnar on Aug 10, 2015, 01:29 AM
Hey everyone,

I figured I'd post a WIP here to help show where my progress is at, and also maybe stir  up some more engagement in our section of the site.

Unfortunately, I don't have pics of my progress right now, but here's a pic of my side arm mocked up:
-will post later too... Mobile issues.

Realistically all I need is new armor to replace stunt armor and I'm on eligible, but here's my to do:

Anywho here's my completed list:
-stunt helmet
-stunt armor
-stunt Glove
-stunt belt
-stunt trophies
-Flight Suit
-boots
-V 0.5 gauntlets

On the bench (actively being worked on)
-V1 Vest(completed, needs weathering)
-V1 arnior (built and formed, needs paint) (no cod, no back plate)
-V1 helmet (currently in the bonds phase, got screwed by a helmet maker, tons of filler work to do)
-EE-3 sniper rifle, finishing electronics, then paint and weather
-blaster pistol (same progress as above)
-girth belt (awaiting belt fro dha bral)

On the shelf (projects on hold, or not yet started)
-v1 belt (waiting on finished blaster)
-v1 gauntlets (designing electronics)
-v1.5 helmet (deciding on helmet maker and model)
-cape (depends on final armor layout)
-jet pack (long term, no plans for integration in v1)

Let me know how we can help!   Can you make it out to an Armor Party near Lougheed mall the next time I throw one?  Bring what you have and something to work on and we''ll help you get it knocked out.

I'm back in town for force Friday, so yup! I'll be pretty much at all events starting September!

Well serim, let's get you started! And we'll see what we can help with!

Also keep an eye on dha brahls b pull sales thread, lots of good stuff up there! With a little creativity to stuff works well! Just look at my westars! They looked bad when I got em... But a little sanding and paint and they're passable

(I'll need help with a backplate)

New bucket getting closer to first layer of primer... So much work... Never buy from unknown sellers!!!

Blaster shave first round of bondo, with more to come... Sniper should be finished within a week, pistol needs more time to work on the firing mechanics for the electronics.

Yup, I'm on stand-by for my sintra armor until I'm back in vancouver... Want to get some expert advise and an extra set of hands before I move onward... Plates are all ready and shaped (except Cod, Backplate) I just need final tweaks and them mounted to vest before paint. My application vest is a good 2-3 inches shorter than this one, so it'll be a bit of a squeeze for the plates, but it should work... (I'll be like boba with his mid drift vest

This will be my paint job on my application kit as well, so I won't look much different. Doing a lot of work today... One of the nice things about first building with foam is for $5 I now have practice, and direction for the final version.

Final assembly is going down tonight on sniper, going to make some trophies, might be able to get pistol partially assembled pending I find a descent bracket for my scope.

Helmet is getting closer, hopefully I'll have bondo on it by tonight

Sweet.    Sounds like a plan.   The island crew has gotten four sets of sintra done in the last week so they'll be a huge help for you.  I've never worked with the stuff yet so GardenGeek is going to bring me some scrap to play with just so I have an idea how to work it when it comes time to help you.

It was great seeing everyone this past weekend!

Since the armor party I have gone out and picked up the supplies I need to keep moving forward with my kit
-Bondo
-Paints
-Nuts for screws
-T-visor for helmet
-misc. shop supplies (proper dust/paint mask)
(still need to get snaps and velcro)

I've now put my sniper rifle together (minus the scope, still looking for a potential mounting rail) and the sniper is now ready for bondo

Video Here: http://vid1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag127/Gnar-Gnar_Jinn/IMG_2451.MOV_zpse5g2kebm.mp4

I'll be installing electronics in my blaster pistol later this week, hopefully both blasters will be functional and painted by the end of this weekend.

Once the sun comes out later this week I'll bondo my helmet, cod, and blasters.

Cod: welp, as I do not have a heat gun atm, this is on hold (i did cut out the middle piece though)

Flight suit: I've sewn on elastic to hold the flight suit down

Ammo pouches: Repainting the green ones, testing a few techniques today... we'll see how they turn out.

well these pouches are real military pouches... they are real leather with a special coat to prevent mildew ect... So I just used regular spray paint on those. From now it will be a similar process to what i'm doing with my boots...

I use a mix of black, burnt umbar, burnt sienna, and raw sienna acrylic paints mixed with a little water, and sponge apply the mixture to the boots... after a couple of minutes I remove paint with a damp rag, using a very light pressure and twisting motion.

from there I'll use some burnt sienna to simulate some wear in high spots, then a black wash (using on off black acrylic paint)

There's actually a special spray paint for doing that... But worst case scenario I'll reprint them with acrylics, as acrylics should be able to deal with the flexing... Preliminary testing of the pouches is looking positive though.

Not much to report for the weekend.

-Sniper: 6 plus hours of sanding and my EE-3 Sniper is almost ready for primer  >:(

-Blaster pistol has greeblies attached, and I'll hit it with primer at the same time as the EE-3 (still need to install electronics)

-Back Plate: Dremel is dead  :( so I'm at a stand still with sizing my back plate...

-Cod: Working on finding a belt to hold it in place. need to heat mold still

-Knees: Kneed to start (get it, knee+need  lame I know)

-New Helmet: Visor came in (Yay ;D) Doesn't fit  (Argh, ???) Ordering new one, but good news is it fits my J2P so all is not lost

Speaking of cool stuff to learn...

I put together a couple of Force Awakens models this weekend, and have begun the weathering process...

First time building a model, and doing small scale weathering, pretty excited how it's turning out so far. Tomorrow I'll add streaking to the Falcon, and a day or two after that I'll add the blaster damage/smoke streaking.

No photos, but I'm un schedule to be ready for application pics on Monday...

Mounting my armor with rare earth magnets for now... easy to make adjustments... will most liking go to a hybrid of bottles and magnets in the future, but for now, straight magnets.

I've been curious about using magnets.   Let me know what you think.

there's some great tutorials/success stories over at the dented helmet... I figure its a great way to set alignment for doing the bolts anyways... let's you test out the configuration before committing to the bolts... I should have a test tomorrow night, and if all is good, then it's a little bit of shopping and painting this weekend :D

What glue do you guys recommend for layering the sintra again?

Contact cement.    I know many people use a brand called Barge but I'd guess any brand would work

Magnets ordered for my kit... we'll see how they hold up... I bought 30, so there should be plenty. will most likely attach magnets to plates and use washers on vest so the vest can be stored easier. Will hopefully also be using these for knees along with with chest, diamond, ab, shoulder and backplate. I plan on going the old fashioned route (velcro or bolts) with the collar due to how it needs to be on the vest. I begin painting plates tomorrow :D
Title: Re: Gnar Gnar WIP
Post by: Gnar-Gnar on Sep 21, 2015, 12:15 AM
well, since I'm waiting on magnets and sun before paint, I figured I'd but some more detail into my cod and knees.

Knees: Dart blocks added.

cod: bondo applied, needs one more layer then done.

Back: getting better, however it is still giving me trouble... based on previous pictures on this thread do you guys think I can get away without a back plate? CRL's state something to the effect of more than 2/3's of back must be covered by a cape for no plate to be needed. I will eventually have a back plate, but i need to get approved quick so I can do the halloween parade, and as such, i think my time might be better spent elsewhere.

based on the coverage of the cape in this picture I would say that you can get away without for now.

thanks for the feedback!

Hopefully I'll have primer and metallic base layer played down tomorrow on all the armor (aside from backplate) and top layers laid down tuesday, with weathering on wednesday.

Application photos will be taken as soon as my magnets come in.

Just a quick report...

-Still Waiting on Magnets, hoping they arrive by saturday so I can get my app sent in Monday...

-Paint: Realized I was using two different brands of paints, decided since i had to wait on the magnets and mods to my knees i'd test them to make sure they were compatible... they are. The primer and black base layers have been applied. Tomorrow the metallic coat will go on, followed by the top 2 coats of color paint.

-Soft Goods are 100% ready to go minus the belt for the cod
-Weapons: My Westar 34's until custom blaster finished

-Other than final paint, weathering and mounting, I think I'm all done :D (for V1.0 at least anyways... already beginning work on 1.1 while paint is drying :D )

I have a bunch [10 or so?] of 8mm rare earth magnets.   they are small but super strong... not sure if they will work but we can meet up and you can check them out if you want.  I also have a couple of ridiculously strong 25mm molybdenum magnets for... reasons... but you can't have those ;)

Thanks to Zoph I have a few magnets... still waiting on my bulk order...

The end is so near, most of my plates have been primed, coated with gloss black, and then coated with metallic. Only the top colors remain. only my knees and cod await paint (paint booth isn't big enough for everything at once). other than paint, I just need to attach elastic to knees and boba thong, and add any velcro to support magnets (won't know until magnets arrive).

Here's some pics from tonight,

Won't be much of it showing... Blue is going in over top of this... same paint scheme as my stunt armor...

Although I do plan on using this as the main color for my backpack or jetpack when I get to that addition.

If I still know my stuff, I think you're pretty much good to go once you've painted/hidden those elastics on your knees. Certainly a very well pulled off kit! 8)

However, I'll point out a few things I noticed just in case you want to do something about them before you app in. Likely these are more just quality adjustments, rather than trying to make it pass (since I think you will), so don't feel like you need to do anything about these (unless an App Team member agrees  ). Here we go:

-First thing I noticed is that I think the arms of you flightsuit could be tailored a little bit more snugly to give a sleeker look. They're almost baggy looking in the front shots.
-Second is plate spacing. This may be coming down to super perfectionist, but the bottom point on your right chestplate is closer to the ab plate than the bottom point of your left chestplate. I think this could fixed by ever so slightly lowering the right side of the ab down, so it appears to be parallel with your belt (as in the pictures it is slightly off).
-Personally, and to a lesser degree than the sleeves, I think the thigh area of your flightsuit could do with a tiny bit of tailoring as well. There's just a little too much bagginess in the back.
-The elastic straps on your knees need to be hidden inside your flightsuit or coloured to match... Of course I'm pretty sure you knew that one :P
-In the front-on pictures it appears that your left knee is sitting higher than the other one. You may want to take another picture to correct that.

Other than those things, just blackwash you chest and shoulder plates to match your helmet, get yourself a backplate, and you will have a tip-top quality kit! ;D

Keep it up, Gnar!

Your armour looks very good, simple, almost bare bones basics, lots of room for future mods and editions.  Chest plates look evenly enough placed.

I wouldn't worry about any tailoring it doesn't look needed.
Knee armour elastic strapping should not be an issue, (since all elastic strap is usually black or white) if it is an issue, a little extra material sewed like a horizontal pocket for the straps to feed through should be easy enough to add.

You look like a tall trooper, you should keep the long rifle, it looks right for the outfit.

Overall good job!

Welcome!

Everything is ready, and not ready...

This kit was designed to get me OM, but there's a lot of work ahead. I purposely choose to use magnets for my mounting system, as it allows me maximum flexibility for adjusting plates. This kit was designed as a testing ground, with a lot of room for improvement as I gain experience. I appreciate the feedback I've received, and feel that it has reinforced some feelings I've had about this kit.

Here's the list of planned upgrades:
-New Sniper
-New Blaster pistol
-Taking in flightsuit
-Taking In vest
-Switching from magnets to bolts for armor mounting
-Custom Solo style holster for my custom pistol
-Backplate
-New gauntlets
-New Helmet
-New Gloves
-New girth belt
-Wire in iComm
-Thigh Plates
-Bicep Ammo straps
-New Cape

with the cape you have, you don't need a backplate.   Rule is so long as the cape has enough coverage that you couldn't tell you aren't wearing one.   3/4 coverage or better.

This pic shows the weathering a bit better.

plate alignment is a little funky in the pic (partly due to camera angle, partly due to a hastily put on kit)

Apparently no balaclava's allowed on app photos... (balaclava helps keep the illusion of a space helmet for kids looking up at me, that way they never see any hair or skin inside the helmet.) Also I'm a closet nerd, so I feel a need to hide my face at all times while cosplaying  :P

Apparently I've taken too long of a vacation! almost three months and no progress reports!

No new upgrades as of yet... progress has been slow. Waiting on 6mm sintra, trying to decide plan of action for new belt. Blasters are sitting on the shelf awaiting motivation, same with helmet.

Most of my money has gone into parts for my Kylo Ren and HS Ep.7 builds...

But I do have some progress on my Groots :D

Did I hear a call for 6mm? I just need a way to get some of our sintra over there. Let's figure something out! I know that Zoph needs some as well as one of our new recruits.

If you have any extra to spare, I wouldn't say no  8) I won't be over on the island until late april, but if anyone is coming over to the mainland, I can meet up and grab sintra and disperse it amongst the mainlanders.

I have several full sheets. And half sheets. The larger ones are to the point that I am ready to shove them out the airlock. So getting rid of... I mean sharing it with you, would be mutually beneficial.

I can store quite a lot at my place (there's carport storage, basement storage and shed storage)

I've got a couple new additions to me since my last troop...

new modular staff (currently staff and umbrella toppers, working on vibro axe topper), and saber trophies, here's some pics from yesterday's troop (ignore the chest/collar plate issue, magnets attacked each other, and nobody told me.

6mm sintra is now in, I'll be cutting out my new armor at a slightly smaller size, this along with taking my soft goods in a bit should dial me in a little better.
