Armor Construction / Grendel's WIP 2024
« Last post by Grendel on Mar 24, 2024, 10:38 PM »
So that happened...
Since my last attempt I've been divorced, sold my house, traveled to south east Asia for a year (India, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Philippines), came back to the States, helped a friend rehab from surgery, and got myself settle back in Vegas, and done some short trips to So Cal and Mexico.

I finally have most of my crafting gear out of storage an have a quiet place I can craft in my down time.

So the plan is similar to before.
I am still inspired by the Gar Saxon armor from the Darth Maul Son of Dathomir comic

I love the black and grey flight suit with the red piping accent on the sleeves, black vest with red piping , and how the shoulder bells have a nice Mythosaur like shape on em in red. I will likely duplicate as much as is reasonable.

The gauntlets have a great shape to them, though I have my doubts they will pass.

I plan on using  Dark Grey,/Silver-ish, Red, Black, Yellow as my color scheme.
I will be using  Jango armor for most of the kit, though likely using legacy back plates for articulation. Depends on which pack I go with.
I have a color design for the armor that is inspired by the Darth Maul armor and Saxons from the comic that should be original enough.

The plan is to tackle this in phases.

Phase 1 - Soft parts
            1.5 - Dye/ initial weathering
Phase 2 - Shape sintra into Armor
2,5 Work out placement on vest and harness, batle damage placement (if any)
Phase 3 - Helmet acquisition/build
Phase 4 - Electronics
Phase 5 - Weapons acquisition/build
Phase 6 - Paint/weathering
Phase 7 - Pre app dialing in of everything (Fitting, paint, weathering)
Phase 8 - App begins

It's official Mercsfans, my chest plate was definitely too big. Here is a photoshop of a new design, sized appropriately

Would this design meet CRL for a Covert PI?

After a chat with my Ruus'alor, I'm also lengthening my thigh plates as well.

Those are some clean looking gauntlets.  Great jump on the build!

thanks. I've been suggesting the pattern for a while and figured I should use it . Might just leave them clean during the app process then add something after approval

Soft Parts / Re: Soft Parts Weathering
« Last post by Karl Dha'Werda on Mar 24, 2024, 11:57 AM »
Hiya all, looking to start weathering my soft goods soon, and I've been looking into how to do it. One of the things I've been concerned about, though, is keeping them clean. I've heard of the alcohol and Febreze in a spray bottle method, and that you shouldn't machine wash, but does anyone else know a good way to do it?

Hey Vod, I recently switched to a two piece flight suit and redid my weathering.  I used spray paints to weather my soft parts.  Browns/tans/greys on my black flightsuit.

My wife machine washes my pants and long sleeve shirt with cold water.  This helps keep the paint weathering on there.

Figured with rebuilding a old kit I would make some basic gauntlets  using a pattern from the Armor Archive website

Those are some clean looking gauntlets.  Great job on the build!

Armor Construction / Re: Kritika's Armor WIP

September to December 2023

Kritika has always disliked her cod piece, so when the idea of a loin cloth with kama came about she jumped at the new opportunity.

The fabrics were pleather/faux leather aqua teal and green. We had Kota & Kira Grell in our clan commission both the kama and loin cloth for Kritika. They were also commissioned for Rex Dha’Werda’s Crusader kama and Karl Dha’Werda’s modern kama.

At an Armor Party (AP) in December 2023, Kritika tried on her new loin cloth and kama.

The process of weathering was done to make the loin cloth and kama match the rest of her kit using tans and silver/greys.

Kritika wore her new kama and loin cloth at an invasion that year on 12/30/23. We learned pictures are better before trooping opposed to afterwards. She removed her balaclava from her face for these photos and you can see it bunched up at her next. Overall Kritika loves this new upgrade for her kit.

February to March 2024 - not finished

Kritika has been looking for the option of shnees (shins and knees combined) for quite awhile. The current knees dig in and it is uncomfortable. The style which Ahsoka uses in animated Clone Wars peaked her interest and wanted something similar but with the knees combined into the shins.

Karl Dha’Werda was able to source clone shnees just the front part from a vendor on Etsy out of the United Kingdom. These shnees are from the animated clone wars Phase 1 armor. Phase 2 has separated knees. These vacuum formed ABS shins were made very well and of good quality.   The shnees arrived and were a perfect fit Karl Dha’Werda, but had to be trimmed to fit Kritika’s shorter legs.

Once the shnees were trimmed filler primer was used. A few days later for cure and then a metallic antique nickel paint was used. The antique nickel has a brownish bronze color to the nickel color.

A few days to cure (winter paint takes longer for drying paint), then the green paint was used. A few days later teal was used for Kritika’s knee area. The color difference is to also help with the distinction between the shin and the knee parts.

Quote from: Modern CRLs > Armor > Lower Body Armor
If shnees are used, the knee area must be physically distinguishable from the shin plate even if connected. An example of this would be to hinge the knee part of the shnee or add trauma plates to the top part. Simply extending an existing design or giving the top part a different paint job will not be accepted.

Leather strapping was then used at the top of these shnees. The rivets/chicago screws were painted to match the paint of the knee area.

Velcro will be used to secure these shnees to the legs of Kritika’s boots and the bottom by her ankle.

Then weathering to match the weathering of the rest of the armor.

Kritika tried on her new shnees and the fit and function works extremely well. We have some additional shaping to slim down the leg part a little more and weathering the straps.

Armor Construction / Open Seasons Grunt v2

So as part of coming out if retirement I decided to rebuild an old kit I made in 2010 that wasn't submitted for approval.

To that end I decided to try a different approach with the chest armor
