Walon Vau CRL discussion
« on: Dec 02, 2015, 02:48 PM »
Hey guys,

So a fellow vod and I are going to be doing Kal Skirata and Walon Vau. I'll be doing Vau, and as there are no official CRL, we'll have to do tons of research to get this as right as possible. Now then, there IS a Kal Skirata CRL on the 501st which I'll be basing it off. The reasoning of this is that Kal's kit is very similar to Jango's and thus it should only require some light modifications to get this right. So here goes. First, some reference from the books.

References
Triple Zero
"Ordo wasn't fooled by Vau's restrained politeness. Seven years ago Vau had loomed over him as a figure of authority in his black Mando armor for the first time, the strill at his heels."

"For a moment he was unsettled to see Omega and Vau both in black armor."

"Lord Mirdalan, jowls flapping, threw its head back and let out a long, low, moaning howl. The preparations had worked the strill into a hunting frenzy. It could see its master in full Mandalorian armor, and it smelled and heard men who were tense and ready to fight. All its instincts and training said hunt, hunt, hunt."  - I'm assuming this means Jango armor.

"Ahh ... ," Vau said. The rifle's scope was still pressed to the eye slit in his black helmet. He looked like the very image of death. Much as Etain had grown to find that armor reassuring, it made it no less intimidating. "Now, this is not a man used to avoiding professional assassins. Watch carefully and tell me what you feel."

"The strill was a little bright light of pure joy as it raced along the walkway ahead of Etain and Vau. There were still a few pedestrians around, leaving factories and workshops for the night, and Vau had taken off his helmet. A dull black armored chest plate didn't attract attention, it seemed, but this wasn't a neighborhood where a distinctive Mandalorian visor would pass unnoticed."  - This makes me think of flat black.

True Colors

"My Mandalorian armor's black-black, the traditional color of justice."

"Vau's hundred-liter backpack had room enough for a few extras." - The Kal Skirata CRL mentions a backpack as well. I would need to figure out more about this.

"You're conspicuous in that black armor, Sarge," Scorch said kindly."

"Vau pulled out the flamethrower, eased himself into a kneeling position, and opened the valve. Mird cocked its head, eyes fixed on the weapon.
-Where'd you get that, Sarge?" Scorch asked.
-Borrowed it from a flame trooper."
-Does he know?"
-He won't mind." - This points to the fact that Vau does not sport a Wrist Flamethrower since he uses no Jetpack and thus can't use the fuel for it.

"It was worth a try." He tapped his forearm controls, adjusting his helmet's voice projector to maximum. "Mird!" - Similar to Boba's gauntlet?

"his hands were shaking when he unfastened the backpack's assortment of pouches." - I feel a simple military backpack would do. I'm guessing black colored?

Order 66

"Vau stood behind him in his black beskar'gam with his helmet under one arm, Mird at his side."

"Mird scrambled up behind him and seized the pillion seat and Vau's back plate with his claws. "Six legs give you a good grip." - Another example of a lack of Jetpack.

"Vau sighed. "Okay." He slapped his thigh plate. "Mird? Mird'ika, come on. Let's go round up the stray nerfs." - proof that Vau sports Leg Armor like Jango does.

"Vau seemed purged. He slapped his thigh plate, and Mird trotted after him into the galley."

So, this really screams to me about a Jango style suit without jetpack. There is unfortunately not many references about weapons besides a rifle and the Verp that Skirata lends him in Triple Zero. So, here is my take on the CRL. Where I'm more uncertain is the gauntlets since there is no apparent flamethrower housing and the traditional Jango holsters. I was thinking of putting them in and have some W-34's? So I'd like some feedback if possible!

Helmet
- Must have a full one piece “T” visor.
- Jango style Helmet
- Entirely flat black
- Ear Caps and top of the range finder are flat black. The stalk of the range finder is a dull aluminium color.
- The keyhole slots in the rear of helmet are cut out clean and backed with mesh underneath.
- The helmet is weathered to match visual references as closely as possible.

Jump Suit
- Jump Suit is black in color.
- Jump Suit is double sleeved.
- Long inner sleeves extend under the forearm gauntlets.
- Shorter outer sleeves stop just above the elbow.
- The seams of both sleeves run in a frontal line from the shoulder, down the bicep and forearm.
- The pants are tighter at the shins/ ankles, to allow a snug fit of the shin armor, without drooping over the boot.
- A neckseal must be worn over the collar to cover the neck area under the helmet.

Vest
- Vest is made of black leather or leather-like material.
- Neck, shoulder and arm openings have piping on the seams.
- Shoulders do not flare outwards and look like wings.

Chest and Shoulder Armor
- Armor is a flat black in color.
- Armor has dimension and give the feeling of thickness and depth.
- Shoulder Armor has eight points.
- Left Chest Armor has two indented horizontal bars.
- Lower bar is wider and positioned as Jango
- Center diamond piece, between the chest pieces, has an indented vertical rectangle as shown in visual references.

Back Armor
- Back Armor has two shoulder slots to allow Backpack harness to fasten to torso underneath.
- Armor has dimension and gives the feeling of thickness and depth.

Belt
- Black with leather or leather-like material.
- Belt is approximatly 2.5 inches wide and stitched along the top and bottom edges.
- The back of the belt overlaps itself and is held together with hook and loop fastener.
- Belt includes (7) Pouches.
- Pouches are arranged as (5) on the right and (2) on the left, with a space between the right and left sides, for the placement of the Westar Holster.
- Each ammo pouch is approximately 3 inches tall in the back, 2-3/8 inches tall in the front, 3/4" deep on top and has a slanted edge, from top to front.
- Each ammo pouch closes in the front and has stitching around the edge of the pouch and down the front flap.

Side Pouches
- Two medium to dark brown cargo-style pouches are worn on the hips.
- Pouches shall have a slanted flap over the front of the pouch.
- Pouch slides onto, or is secured between, the Kidney Armor and the Codpiece.

Gauntlets
- The gauntlets are hinged on the inside of the forearm and close on the outside with hook an loop fastener or similar attachment.
- The right gauntlet includes the following components:
    - Two toggle switches on upper inside section
    - Four forward facing darts in front of middle section
    - Side housing, which holds the 3 sided knife.
    - Four square pattern indentations on lower gauntlet section.
- The left gauntlet contains the following components:
    - Three square pattern indentations on the lower gauntlet section as show in visual references (Jango)

Gloves
- The gloves are black in color and constructed of a thin, soft leather or similar material.
- Gloves are worn tucked underneath the gauntlets.

Codpiece
- Codpiece is dimensional and curves under at the bottom.

Thigh Armor
- Armor is curved to fit snugly over thighs.
- Armor has dimension and gives the feeling of thickness and depth.
- A visible strap is inaccurate.

Knee Armor
- Inner section of the knee armor has the upside down "F" pattern.
- Outside section of the knee armor has the rocket dart assembly with two rocket darts.
- Armor has dimension and gives the feeling of thickness and depth.
- A visible strap is inaccurate.

Shin Armor
- Shin armor fits snugly over shin and sits just above the boot .
- Armor does not fall loosely over the boot.
- Armor has dimension and gives the feeling of thickness and depth.
- A visible strap is inaccurate.

Boot Armor
- Boot armor conforms to the curve of the boots and squares off at ankles.
- Armor has dimension and gives the feeling of thickness and depth.
- A strap is used to attach to boot heels on both sides.

Boots
- Boots are black and do not have any zippers or laces.
- Snaps on both sides of heel upper, to accept the boot armor, is recommended.
Men's "Merona Rolando" style brown boots are an example of an acceptable boot.

Blasters
- Westar-34's (with holster) and/or a Verp

Optional
Backpack
- The Backpack is made to resemble available visual reference.
- Primary colors of the Backpack are black.
- Backpack is weathered to look battle damaged.

Are there any canon visual references?

You've done a great job compiling written references, but all it really tells us is that his armor is black. A lot of the other stuff other than the thigh plate reference is speculation.

Unfortunately there are none (contrary to Skirata), I think there's a figurine of him floating around but I'm not sure if it's custom made, which is why I was concentrating on the written references.

Any suggestions? I'd would really love to get this fleshed out as an official CRL but if there are no visual reference I understand the reluctance.

We really have to have a few visual references for a canon CRL. You're welcome to make a custom kit that is your interpretation of the character under a different name! That's the best compromise for legends characters with no visual references.

A shame! Oh well. Much appreciated though for the quick response! :)
