Flight suit questions
« on: Dec 28, 2015, 01:02 AM »
I recently purchased this flight suit in black: http://tacticalgear.com/tru-spec-poly-cotton-twill-27-p-flight-suits-black?gclid=CIrL9t3t_ckCFYqGfgod7qQKGg#/7211/653,2078/1

I know I need to cover all zippers and I was going to do so by sewing a small square of the same material over where the zipper stops in the closed position, hiding it from view but still leaving it functional. The actual zipper is covered on both sides by material so it just looks like a seam in the suit no metal is showing. There are also no pockets or pouches on the seat at all, kind of annoying but actually good because I want to replicate a boba fett style suit with some exceptions like color. I wanted to ask if I can leave the zippers functional if they are not visible at all and are securely shut? Also is a double sleeved style required? There is a small external pouch on the left arm for pens or maybe a small cell phone can that be left alone? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

As long as zippers are hidden you are fine. I sewed a flap over my zippered pockets on my first flightsuit and held the flaps closed with tiny velcro patches at each end. Double sleeves are not required and the upper arm pocket is fine as long as the zipper is hidden.

Hello, I have the same flight suit. Would the zipers on the cuffs of the sleeves and on the cuffs  on the legs need to be cuvered too?

Sleeve zippers will (I hope) be covered by your gauntlets and spats/leg armour/ankle straps or the like should take care of the ones at the ankle.

The sleeve ziper pocket and flap pocket on the sleeve is below the sholder.

Ah, my misunderstanding. Easiest thing to do is take the pull tab off and sew the flaps together.

That would work very nicely. A second plate creating a layered look that covers the bicep works well.

Or replacing the zipper with sewn-in magnet closures could keep the pockets functional. Unless I'm forgetting that bicep pockets are prohibited....

Would mechanic cover-alls be okay to use instead of a flight suit? If I have to sew up the pockets, I can.

While I'm no Ruus'alor, my understanding is that you cannot have VISIBLE fasteners (buttons, zippers, etc). That doesn't mean you cannot use them. There are many fairly easy ways to hide zippers and buttons, etc.

Pockets are probably only a problem if they interfere with the attachment and sitting of your armor panels.
