Back Plates?
« on: Jun 11, 2016, 03:35 PM »
I have been looking at a bunch of different armor designs and have noticed a trend that everyone's back plate is massive. It pretty much covers their entire back.

Is it necessary to have such a large back plate? I was looking at my ballistic plates in my real kit and was noticing that it is no where near as large. Am I able to make my back plate for my armor mimic my ballistic plate? My ballistic only covers down a little more than mid back. Does anyone know if that is allowable?

As always thank you for your time!

To be fair, it's not really a trend. That's how Jango and Boba's backplates are designed to look.

Pretty sure the Crl states back plates must cover 2/3 of your back, but can be of a unique design.  The Boba/ Jango plate is A) recognizable as Star Wars, and B) has templates for easy design and creation.

That is a very valid point. I have to admit that I did not recognize that. With that being put out there I will go and proceed to put my foot into my mouth and crawl into the corner of shame.

Back covering:
Some form of back covering is required. (Backpack, back armor, air tank, cape, cloak, etc.)
Must cover at least 2/3 the overall width and length of the back.
Back armor SHOULD be used as all canon references for Modern Era Mandalorians show back armor. However, if your Mandalorian wears a duster or other jacket or a cape that fully covers the back from shoulder to shoulder and neck to waist, the use of a backplate is not required. Backpacks and jetpacks are also acceptable in lieu of a back plate. However, the back covering must completely cover the back as to make it unknown that there is no backplate present.
Soft back coverings can be substituted for back armor pieces as long as they add to the overall look of the applicant’s armor.
Full/half capes are acceptable as long as they cover the entire back area. (No armor vest should be showing.)
Soft/hard backpacks/packs are acceptable alternatives.
Capes of all styles will be judged on a case-by-case basis based factors including, but not limited to, fabric type, weathering, and quality.

Haha no worries! If that style backplate isn't your thing, you're welcome to wear another style!

Now looking at the post with the CRL in it, am I able to connect my neck armor to the back plate? The current theory that I am having is to have a neck piece that can be connected to the back plate with some sort of colored 2 inch nylon. It would either be that or go with velcro on the front and back.

As always thank your for your help!

That I can't help with.  I have no plans to use neck armor and haven't started on my back plate.

Yes. Boba Fett's ESB armor has a collar plate that connects to the back plate using studs.  I don't know how nylon strapping would look, but I imagine a setup similar to Fett's would be allowable.

You could also do the Galaxies backplate, smaller more compact.

If you want the two plates to be connected rigidly then you'll want to be looking at Boba Fett. His armour uses bolts to connect the front and back together.

Or do you want the two plates to be able to shift but be connected to each other? I used a small strip of leather to connect my back and front plates - they sit flat and nestled up against each other when I'm standing straight but are able to shift when I move. Nylon would work too, although I think nylon would be best hidden on the underside, leather could work on top or bottom.
