So, only a short update this time

Everything that I have made from foamex is now primed and metallic coats on


I have also had all of my other plates I have been waiting on turn up from EA so this shall be my next time sink of cutting, assembling, prepping and painting


I am however looking ahead to the next paint colours.

So I am only concentrating on the plates for the lower half of the body.









So based on these images, that show the kit in various light settings I believe that the leg plates are all a very dark colour. I am thinking Matt black. The colour does not seem that indifferent to the flight suit, just the texture as such.

I believe that it will be matt black. An appropriate amount of weathering with wire wool to bring the damage in, and on places like the knees, tops of the shins, raised corners of the thigh plate holsters, etc take it right back through to metallic in places followed bu a light black wash to take the shine off.

Does anyone else have any further insight to add before I find time to start painting like this?

I believe that black makes far more sense than silver (as we don't really have Canon CRLs for this build) as it is replicating Mauls colours. The Canon CRLs for the captain version of this do state charcoal grey/black for the plates that match which was my other reasoning.

I think you've got the right idea for the leg plates. Looking at the thigh especially in some of those shots compared to the cod and ab plate, you can definitely tell the color difference.

You'll definietly want to work them over with some steel wool and weathering washes like you said, to get that almost charcoal/somewhat hazy look to them

Definitely inspiring me to move a bit faster than the snail's pace I'm moving on my DW kit.  I'm especially interested to see how you work the harness in with the jet pack.  Also love the idea of the magnets for the thigh holsters as I was worried that snaps and velcro alone would still leave them floppy as the Westar's are heavy.

Re paint. Something I see a lot of people miss out is the DW blue underlayer to the paint. If you look at the helmets it is most clear that its their old death watch armour repainted as opposed to new armour all together. Id say to go for maximum accuracy. At least give a bit of death watch blue under the T visor and shoulders. If you really want me to fan girl you could actuallygo asfar to paint the old shoulder sigils on and have them partly visable through paint texture (the masked off areawould be slightly raised and give some more depth to the paint) and a tiny bit of weathering. This is just a nit picking thing you might wabt to think about.

Now I know that would a cool idea, it wouldn't be screen accurate doing so as that's the ambient lighting that's making it blue and not logical paint layering progression.
I've looked over that episode allot for my super commando captain and the animators haven't thought as far as logical paint layering progression at all, its why all the grunts have same weathering patterns bar their helmets.
they have allot of animation to do without allot of time for the smaller detail of being layered over the last skin, only to wipe and add a new one

This is what most people see as being blue under it when its the lighting



With the ambient lighting taken out in the hanger the "blue" bits look more like what the animators use for the base metal or what I can only see as a pigment error as it doesn't show anywhere else on the armour


Other Grunts in open air

We might have had this same debate on the BHG, but the bucket pretty clearly shows blue peeking through the red.  As far as the lower leg armor goes, you'd be looking at dark charcoal grey rather than a pure black.  Use black for weathering and a bit of the lighter grey as accent and edge lighting as well.

Rustoleum Dark Metallic Charcoal is a good choice for your base coat on these, weathering with a Flat or Satin black and some flat or satin light grey and a flat aluminum for the bare metal look.

Yes we did and I still hold to it being an error as its not present anywhere else in the kit, nor in anyone else's kit that have done it.
its an unnecessary detail as it makes no sense as to why its there on this one section being that of the visor than anywhere else.

Perhaps it's because the only blue on the DW Grunt kit is on the helmet face. the rest of their armour is just silver like jango or a darkish grey colour and that's all showing through through the kit. Tbh I think that the only bits repainted are the red pieces and the black pieces and that on this grunt they actually didn't repaint the ab and cod which is why they look like a much more weathered visla DW grunt.

most DW members only had a blue visor. Only visla and a few others had blue anywhere else and even then it was pretty seldom seemingly only on himself and on specialist kits.

That makes 10000000% sense.  The gauntlets and lack of other accessories (like shin darts and toe disc shooter) on these are the same for both the DW Grunts and the SC Grunts, the only hard-part difference being the short rocket (on most) vs. S2's tall rockets (on all).

I wouldn't worry about it. you'd actually swayed me with that point till i looked up the original DW armour.

Rustoleum Sail Blue is what I used for the main blue on my Airborne and the Mrs' Bo.
