Fans for my helmet
« on: Mar 09, 2016, 12:44 PM »
I'm looking to install fans in my helmet but need direction from experienced individuals. I've seen multiple set ups but not sure what's more cost effective and quality. Any advice?

If you have a soldering iron (or know someone with one) you can wip up a simple helmet fan for about 5 bucks including batteries (if there isn't a radioshack or similar where you live, look on Amazon). If you don't like it...it cost 5 bucks, give or take.

You'll want to use a squirrel cage fan, like you'd see in a laptop pc. (see pic below) They're thin, and the fan won't catch on anything like hair, or ears.  Easy to wire up like Malakier said. Just get a battery case with switch from Radio Shack.  Wire the fan to the case, then put it in the helmet.  You can even wire more than one to the battery pack (it will run the battery down faster, so keep spares).  Voila.  Very easy.  :D

Probably a silly question, but what would be the ideal positioning for one in the helmet? Location of fan, and direction of the blower port and whatnot?

Where would I find a fan like this. I've looked through radio shack and Amazon/EBay. I've seen models similar but not sure if it's the same kind or size for our type of application. Is there a specific size?

Short answer is use whatever size will fit. voltage is a max voltage. You can use lower voltage then specced, it just won't turn as fast (side benifit is that it will also be quieter)

I'm using 2 of these currently:

My fan is positioned on the side of my bucket so that the air is blowing across my visor, it's good to stop fogging up :)

Actually yes! Courtisy of our very own Mandalore!

(tried to embed the video but didn't have any luck)

Use whatever fan you want, but other then that, it's a great tutorial.

Got my fans now. Just trying to do some research on what type of power supply to use. They are 5v fans and some things I looked up on the internet says 9v batteries won't last long. What type of power would you recommend?

I got a full set up from Eqdizzle. It's two fans along with a slim rechargable battery pack and another battery powered pack. Plan on facing one at the visor and not sure how to place the other yet. The only thing I'm not sure about yet is how to secure them to the helmet.

Thanks! Is there any reason this wouldn't work? It already has a switch installed so all I would need to do would be to connect the fans right?https://www.amazon.com/Pair-Battery-Holder-Storage-Switch/dp/B00FHJTOVU/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1466516571&sr=8-4&keywords=9v+battery+connector
