Jacad's E60R Rocket Launcher - COMPLETED
« on: Apr 19, 2016, 02:42 PM »
Hello ladies and gentlemandos,

The local Teren clan weapons nerd is back and I'm about to show off the building of perhaps my largest weapon to be added into my little armory!

Where was this Rocket Launcher from?
If you played the older Battlefronts, one and two, this Rocket Launcher is seen in the hands of the CIS forces, under the Assault Droid and the Droid Marines, I believe? The Rocket Launcher even appeared in the 2D animated Clone Wars! In SW Commander, the Imperial Shock Troopers and the Rebel Vanguards are armed with similar looking launchers.

The History of the Launcher
This Rocket Launcher was made by the CIS forces after their miserable defeat on the battle of Geonosis. The Launcher was a response to the droid army being unable to take down the Clone Army's AT-TE walkers. With plenty of resources, the Confedreacy Engineers made a cheap rocket launcher for B1 Battle droids to carry to have an advantage over not only Clone Walkers, but Clone LAAT's as well. This rocket Launcher has seen plenty of action outside of the Droid Army's in the hands of the Rebel forces. If this Rocket Launcher could successfully down a AT-TE, imagine how it would be for an AT-AT, noting that you aim for it's weakspots like the Neck between the armored hull and head, or the joints of the legs.

Why this Launcher?
I like it's history of being cheaply made, very similar to Russia's RPG7 that is widely manufactured and is used by so many nations today. I'd imagine CIS weapons entering the Black Market after their fall, even as these weapons weren't meant for organic hands [Since droids do not complain about recoil or the feeling of the blaster in their cold hands], they were simple, and had a punch. I'll add a few features to make the Launcher "Wet-friendly", such a comfy grip and maybe a less complicated scope [My mando has a Rangefiner after all, lol].
In other words, I didn't like the design of the Clone Launcher, or the Rebel Launcher, so I was torn between the Imperial Shock Trooper's Rocket Launcher and the CIS's.

Do note, I've been pretty slow with this build for a few months, life, bills, etc. But now I'm coming back into the game.

Here is my build so far. As you can see, I am using two 4 Inch x 2 foot long ABS pipes, a coupler, a coupler end and a cap as the skeleton of this rocket launcher. I also decided to use 6mm Sintra to help form a flushed surface on the surface of the Rocket launcher. I made not-perfect measurements in attempt to find ways to add the grip housing, the iron sight and the bulgy fins on top of the launcher.

[Edit] If I ever construct this Rocket launcher Again, I'll find PVC pipe of the same thickness and length instead of using Sintra to avoid the struggles of heating and shaping thick plates of sintra.

My only regret was choosing ABS, I don't have any tools that are strong enough to cut it at the moment, which could impede some building work.

As you might see, the Sintra doesn't perfectly wrap and flush well, this is due to how much it had to take to heat the Sintra. I had to use an oven to evenly heat it and shape it. Then I used small machine screws in attempt to flush the plastic with the pipe. It's not perfect, but sanding and bondo should help.

*************************
The next phases for my Launcher

-a Sh#tload of sanding
- Greeb adding
-Bondo
-Moar sanding
-Moar Bondo
-Sanding
-Sanding
-Sanding
-Light installation?
-Priming
-Painting

Greebs?

Oh yes! I found some that would be perfect for my launcher to address these parts here. Some Nerf parts and some other random greebs.

What about the Grip?
Oh...you're going to love what I got for this!

So what's holding you up right now?
I ordered the greebs I need for my Launcher from eBay, I should be receiving them soon. Perhaps the only thing I can do now for the E60R is sand it to flush the bump surfaces of the sintra and even it with the ABS parts.

And I can resume work!

Just received the Nerf I will be cannibalizing into my Launcher, a Nerf Titan. As you can see, the top ridge of the Nerf is perfect for some of the Rocket launcher's ridges and fins.

But before I begin tearing this thing apart, I must sand the Rocket launcher itself until all edges or smooth! Once I'm down with the sanding, I'm going to tape all the greebs together to give you all an impression what I got going. I do got the grip and lower housing, but I'm keeping that under a veil for a bit.

*********
IT seems imgur decided to go kapoot with me. Do forgive me if my image links are bad.

But here is a taped mockup of where my Rocket Launcher is going.

I taped the "Iron sight" greeb, as well as the lower handle housing and the grip! That Grip is from the foreward pistol grip of a Mossberg 500! With the extra PVC pipe I have from trimming the one below the launcher and the grip is attached on, I could turn into the forward grip of the launcher!!! I could also use more PVC piping to be the skeleton for the bottom back fin.

Now I'm facing an interesting challenge: Should I cut the ABS that isn't covered by the PVC plating? There is some things I need to do to test the limitations of ABS pipe. When I first started, cutting was out of the question. Now I'm replenished with better cutting blades to make some incisions.

The Rocket launcher will be a little smaller, but I personally believe the bumps and fins ontop of the launcher won't be so spread out.

Whatchall think?

I'm going to have to cannibalize that Nerf for it's greebs and tape them on the mock up to get a clearer picture.

Thanks for the heads up, NipNip

My sincere apologies, I kinda understand now why double posting wouldn't be allowed. I'll remember this in my WIP Updates.

Thank you, L3R0Y, I hope this WIP helps inspire ideas once I complete it! ^.^

**********************

I completely butchered my Nerf Titan to get the piece I wanted, which was the upper bump area. Here it is in Taped Mock up

I got to get rid of the nerf "Sight" to flatten it down. I also got to sand the Nerf Greeb so it flushes with the Launcher. Then I'm going to build the top rear fin out of Sintra. For the Rear bottom fin, I might use on more Greeb from my now butchered Nerf Titan. I also might..just might remove the air valve the Nerf titan has when you pump it and it builds air pressure, or I could keep it on as an extra, although unnecessary greeb.

And Progress!!

I have krazy glued and hot glued the "Iron sight" and "Middle ridge" into place, fixing them into position. Aligning them was my biggest frustration, but I got it just right. I also took another greeb from that Nerf Titan I completely cannibalized to be the "back fin" of the launcher.

I just need to add one last greeb on the back on that screwed on plate of sintra on the back. I also need to add a forward grip. Others have told me I should have a grip similar to what you see in the Star Wars commander Reference where it is off to the side. What do you all think? I haven't gone that far to make a decision on it yet, since I'm still focused on the greebs.

Next Steps:
-Greeb adding
-Sanding
-Sanding
-Bondo to fill up cracks, seal up small spaces, and go over Nerf Greebs to eliminate all likeliness to Nerf
-Sanding
-Sanding
-Attempt to install lights
- One last sanding
-Primer

in my eyes it looks perfect. a grip under the weapon makes it easier to swing it on your back or carrying it. because the grip on the sides makes is wider. :) still I think it is your weapon so you should do what you like :D

cant wait to see it finished ^^

And the last but of greeb adding is done!!!

I made the back fin out of Sintra. It is hollow and held together by hot glue as well as a few small pieces of Sintra scraps to act as a frame. I now need 3mm Sintra to cover the back fin as well as the front "Iron sight" and Central Nerf Ridge. I used small Sintra scraps to fill any holes or gaps in my sintra layering over the pipe. I check if all my screws are deep (When I drill, I pressed the screws so deep that it bends the Sintra. I do this so I can bondo over the screw and the depressed area of the sintra.)

I decided to connect the front rod with the Nerf ridge, using PVC. It's not attached yet, it's a snug fit though.

Next Steps:
-Trim the foregrip to even legnth
-Sanding
-Sanding
-Bondo to fill up cracks, seal up small spaces, and go over Nerf Greebs to eliminate all likeliness to Nerf
-Sanding
-Sanding
-Attempt to install lights
- One last sanding
-Primer

And here I go, Bondoing the Monster

I hate this method so much, messy, smelly and lord does it try my patience. With how big my Launcher is, I'm expected to probably use 2-3 full cans of Bondo. This will be the longest process to do.

I just bought a palm sander to help eliminate all the thick bondo wads. Once those are gone, I'll use my higher grit sandpaper sponges to help even out the bondo and Sintra. I need to bondo the pipe below the launcher and bondo the ridges. Finally, I need to touch up the screws.

I just came across this thread, so I'm a little late to the party, but thought I'd ask anyway...
I'm assuming you used the Sintra sheets because of the "panel" effect on the launcher, the way it looks like it is in different sections.  Did you consider using a smaller diameter PVC pipe, with a slightly larger piece, same length, cut into the section lengths you wanted for each panel? The barrel cutouts could have been done on the larger pipe as well.

I know it's late to ask/suggest this, just always curious about others' build processes.
