Side opening vest First Try
« on: Jun 27, 2016, 07:08 PM »
I noticed some of the vests have the opening in the back, which seems like a terrible idea.
Today I tried making a vest based on a stab-proof vest I own. It has velcro side openings and was an easy sewing project.
I don't know if this design has been posted before, but here is my version.
(not sure if I'm gonna use this vest, or dye it, or give it away)

First, I traced the protection vest onto sturdy fabric.
I actually cut 4 pieces, 2 pieces for front and 2 for back but stupid me I forgot to put batting in middle. That would have given it more structure.
Sewed it up, and added velcro to both sides.  The shoulder seams are shut, no velcro is needed there.
I didn't add the shoulder piece yet since I wasn't sure about a template.

This looks like a solid start!

I would recommend having the overlap seam face the back so it is not so noticeable (exactly opposite as you have it now) and maybe add a dart at the top to remove the wave at the collar, other than that the shape looks spot on!

Looks like a great fit! Once those pesky darts are in, you should be good to go I think.

Nicely done. Oya vod!

This looks great! I was leaning towards doing a side-opening flak vest for my WIP kit, and this is the nail in the coffin. Great job!
