SkiBlue WIP - Helmet

So, I know that I haven't been very active lately, but the going is slow; I'm working on my kit bit by bit. This summer, I had enough money saved up and purchased a helmet. It showed up earlier this week.

It is a Sabine Wren style cold cast. I'd asked an App Team member if I could use the style even if I wasn't making a Sabine Wren. Obviously, the answer was yes, so I'm really excited to be working with the helmet I really want.

I spent some time last night sanding, applying a bit of bondo, cleaning up the bottom, and cutting out (most) of the visor piece. Sorry, I didn't think to take photos while I was working, but I can definitely get some after work this evening. I'll also share some pictures of it on my head too. It's a bit snug; the visor part (before I removed it) was touching my nose with the helmet just sitting on my head. I can already tell that I'm going to need help figuring out where it needs to sit on my head.

But YAY BUCKET! :)

I can see why! I agree; he's been great communicating with me so far. I'm glad I could support him and his work.

Thank you! Tis my first bucket, so hopefully my mistakes aren't too disasterous! :)

Looks like a great cast.

It's an excellent cast! It's very clean, doesn't need much work in that regard, and it looks really darn accurate. I'm mostly excited about it being cold cast in aluminum; just sanding it a little brings out the metal shine underneath. I wasn't going to weather my kit very much, but with a helmet like this, that aspect of the design concept might be changing a bit.

So here's a shot of the helmet with the visor and bottom excess removed (I kept the tab there because I'm not certain how long it'll be before the visor is installed), and some bondo applied to the cast seam (and some places I chipped while removing the visor cutout).

And the inside:

I was actually gonna try smoothing out the inside a bit and roughing it up; I was thinking about primering the inside as well as the outside, just for asthetic reasons. The edges all need to be prettied up too. All I've done so far is cut off/out excess, so all those edges need sanding. And obviously the bondo. I never thought I would ever sand so much in my life...

I'm taking my helmet over to Phoenix's place on Monday to help with the "how to make it sit on my head right" problem, but I'm hoping to have the rest of the prep work done by then. That's why there's a lack of obligatory Mando selfie so far. I might take one tomorrow, for fun.

I thought so too! :)

Thanks!

So, the little bondo-ing and sanding needed is mostly done, but the edges definitely need more cleaning. I need to get inside a bit more and maybe even out some goops in there. I tried to buff it a bit last night to get more shine to come through, but I think it requires more. We'll see how much I can get out of it by Monday.

The bucket is actually a very snug fit. I've got some foam cut out for it, but I'm thinking that I should finish all the edges and sanding/buffing before I get to that part. Having the visor installed for that part would also be helpful. Lots of work ahead of me. :)

If you want to keep some stability in the visor, look into leaving that piece on the bottom of the T and cutting notches on each side to slide the visor into. Not sure how much material you have to work with there but I've seen it done on other helmets and it works well.
