I am a 'functional' junkie. I like things to look cool... but if they actually DO things, even better.

I'm working up some sensors as well. That sounds right inline with something I would do, so it's got my vote. I vent a step further and went for a video feed. The camera I'm using can be positioned for forward or backward perspectives. (It also has night vision).

But what I was considering is two cameras. I can only stream one feed at a time, so I was wondering how would I know to switch the feed from the forward facing camera to the back facing camera.

Pretty sure you just answered that question. Motion sensor facing behind is triggered telling me to change feeds and boom. I got eyes on my 6.

Shouldn't be hard to find a camera small enough to fit. There are tons of tiny drones with FPV cameras, that are designed for a live feed, so they shouldn't be too tricky to get.

@Zando: OMG, fpv cameras didn't even think about it and it's a perfect solution. Small and with transmitting modules.

In addition to those... the various forms of "nanny cams" also offer very very small cameras. Depending on which make/model, HiFi res and night vision are supported. That's the route I went. They all work on secure wifi connections. Connect with most all phones. Offer live feed and recording options and are mostly all under $50.

Blame my uneducation if this is a silly question, but would a PIR motion sensor work on any moving object?  Based on the video showing off the sensor, it detects change in ambient temperature, and is extremely sensitive.  So, if every time you move, would that not set it off, since the temperature read would constantly change?  Maybe there is a different type of sensor that works more adequately for an already-in-motion object? You might need an area-reflective or ultrasonic type of sensor in order to make it work efficiently.

If I'm missing something, please tell me, because I'm always wanting to learn new stuff

I was thinking something similar. That if the sensor is mounted on something that is moving... back of the helmet, then it could potential cause stationary or in-motion items to set it off as you walk past them.

An ultrasonic sensor that can be positioned and shielded to be directional might be a better approach. Time to start prototyping and testing!!!

Pir sensors detect changes on the infrared radiation they receive, as soon as they start moving the amount of IR received varies and they won't work. Ultrasound sensors are the correct option as seen on many Arduino robots. The usual one has a reach of around 3 meters.

In theory, yes.  It may be easier mechanically to just set up one to each side separately, but the boring devil's advocate in my head just simply replies," why not just use a mirror?

Now, if you had a gadget that would turn and focus on that particular side, like a targeter or scanner, THAT would be awesome!

I also think about use in conventions...if you had something light up when detecting someone beside you, you would light up forever...
