WIP: Late Crusader
« on: Feb 08, 2017, 04:46 PM »
So, it seems everyone's showing off their process for making their armor, so I might as well do so too. Should give me some help on it as well.

So, here I have my undersuit and the boots I want to use. It is a set of old german camo BDUs, although I have  no idea what the pattern is named.

Here is a better image of the pattern.

I'm also making a custom vest out of khaki pants and I'm also going to try making a girth belt out of the two belts in the image below. The vest will go down just above the groin and sit there.

And in this last image, I have the material I'm going to use in order to make the armor itself. It is the ribbed steel roofing I was talking about in the other thread I made on this board...at least I think I mentioned it in the other one.

Now, all I ask of you many or few that made it this far, do any of you have images of paper templates/pics directly after the cutting of your armor? The pix for reference help show what it looks like after, but I'd prefer to have an image from the process to work with.

Edit: I'd prefer the images to be of the flat template.

So did Bowfanny help you out with your helmet?  Those boots have a very earthy design on them, but if they are under the flightsuit they should work great.  I recommend a tin snip power tool for cutting metal.  My first set was with 20 gauge sheet metal using hand tin snips; my upgrade modern set is going to be made out of 16 gauge and that power tool cut through like a knife through butter.  Throw some concept sketches together with how you want to us the corrugated roof metal for your armour, so we have an idea of how it will work/give some suggestions.

Yeah, Bow did help with the template for the helmet, though I've yet to flatten out the roofing in order to cut the pieces out.
I'm planning on using a powered tin snip, my cousin has one over in Casper.
As for the concept, I'm liking what you have put together for your torso, so if you still have the templates/pictures of the templates, that would be wonderful to use for reference!

Edit: I'm also wanting to make shin/calf armor to hide the boots, so I'm hoping that will help.

I've worked with corrugated metal before, it is a bit tough to pound flat.  I would recommend picking up some sheet metal at Lowe's or Home Depot instead.  Also a military helmet (like an M1) would be helpful for the dome of you helmet; military surplus stores should have them pretty cheap.

All of my armour (minus shoulder bells and knees, which came from two hardhats) came from The Mandalorian Arsenal which right now isn't currently available for purchase.  I bought the armour myself, so I do not have templates for it and since it came from a vendor you are going to have a hard time getting "secrets" templates of his trade.  I'd start with cardboard to get size and shape figured out first.  My WIP is in my signature for reference.

I used half chaps for my shins/calves, so that might work as a way to hide that "earthy" pattern or a different pair of boots.  I do realize that you are 15 years old and might have trouble getting the right materials while still in high school and not working a full time job.  Work with what you have, creating Late Crusader armour in itself is a great feat to achieve.  I'm working with several Verd'ika myself with their modern kits and I understand where you are coming from.

Okay then, I'll see about getting the chaps, helmet, and work on the cardboard. Thanks again for the help vod, you've been a great help for getting this done. Hell, one of the pics for your armor showed up on google and it was one of the ones to convince my mother to let me do this. XD

Sweet!  Ya, I run a blog with my WIPs for everything and it is my image hosting site where I can pull images onto the forums.  The blog has key search words that populate Google Images.  I found this rather annoying the other day when searching for a piece to add to my kit because my images kept popping up.  The overall goal besides easy access for pictures on the forums is to help others find the Mercs and get started on their own kits (blog link is also in my signature under Mandalorian Armour WIP).

Going to give you a heads up.  3.3 Double Posting is against forum rules, posting multiple times within a 24 hour period.  Use the modify button instead.

While wandering around on the board, I found a post stating that there is no set armor, as for the crusaders built their own armor. This was a liberating thought, as for it meant that I just had to make something to match the style, so I got to work on making my own templates for my torso.

I would love to have feedback on this, as well as know if I need to make a larger backplate.

Back plate looks the right size, but if you could get someone else to take your picture we could get a better comparison with your overall body and size.  Same with the chest plate if you could zoom out we could gauge the size a little bit better.  The 3D dimension of the chest plate looks good.

tl;dr: This is a bump to keep the thread 'alive'.

Your thread is live for 30 days before it goes inactive.  Not sure what the rule is completely on you yourself posting to update your thread, but when others post on your thread after 30 days it is called Necroposting Forum Rules 3.5.  I myself have revived my own threads to keep my WIP all in one place.
