Bondo alternatives?
« on: Mar 07, 2017, 12:16 PM »
So after thoroughly scouting my local Lowe's for scratchbuild materials, I still haven't found any actual Bondo brand stuff. However I DID find a whole shelf of different brands that seem to do more or less the same job. Is there a difference between wood filler and the stuff you scratchbuilders use? (Dumb question probably, but I'm a newb to the whole 3D art scene.)
I don't need to buy a specific brand... right? If so does anyone have any recommendations for alternatives? Yeah, I could order actual Bondo online, but I'm impatient :P

You'll want to make sure whatever you use sticks to pvc / sintra, but I don't think using a different brand should be an issue.

We use bondo because it's fairly tough.  As an auto body filler it has to be.  Lowe's is probably the wrong place to look for it, so try walmart's automotive section or anywhere else that does car stuff.  Wood filler is probably a bit weak for armor use.

Yes. To OriKad you listen.

But seriously. Wal-mart. Go there.

Also, Bondo's Plastic Metal is great for smaller parts. I'm currently using it for my gauntlets. It comes ready to use in a handy-dandy squeeze tube.

I found Bondo galore at my local Ace hardware.

I use wood filler on small parts, like filling screw holes on blasters.  But I don't think it has the structural fortitude of auto body filler.

I found Bondo at Home Depot in the paint department with the spackle and wood filler.

Thanks vode! I live about 10 feet away from a Walmart so after a quick jaunt around the auto section I found exactly what I was looking for. Plus fiberglass tape way cheaper than Lowe's. :D
