CrazyDec's Gauntlet WIP
« on: Jun 17, 2017, 01:59 PM »
So I have negelected the Gauntlet part as it actually seems like possibly one of the toughest parts for me, for some reason...

So I have cut some arm length ish PVC pipe, halved it almost and then attached a piano hinge and used chicago screws to hold it in place.

I have cut down some foamex (sintra) into various box shapes and glued some of it. What I am concerned about is how to close the whole gauntlet and keep it secure. I have seen buckles and another piece of piano hinge used as a locking plate with friction. Otherwise very basic at the moment, I just don't know what to add to them to make them look "cool". I did have an ipod touch and worked on editing a repeating video as a datapad, I then cut the sintra and then gave up when I realised I cut the wrong dimensions...
Is it also acceptable for these chicago screws to be on the outside of the gauntlet?

Looking good so far.  I also have been procrastinating on my gauntlets.  I'm trying the toilet brush holder gauntlets first.  Yours look better than mine for sure now.  Keep it up.

This part should be one of the simplest next to the back piece...
I don't have access to a band saw so I had to really carefully cut this with a dremel down the center, The mitre saw I have doesn't fit the pipe at all. Cutting out the greeblie and panel parts wasn't too hard. The hinges on the side are pretty gnarly too and if I could do them again, I would, but they are this for in the stage now that it's been and done. More pics soon.

Looking good so far vod. My advice for securing the gauntlets would be to use 1.6" Metal Pull Down Loop Draw Latches. You can order them on Amazon

The main thing that stands out to me about your gauntlets is the symmetry of them. They look too much like a few shapes stacked on top of each other.
Try offsetting the cylinder, maybe putting another box next to it. If the other gaunt is a keypad or screen, offset it closer to the inside edge (towards you).
Maybe shave down the main box so it tapers instead of being a rectangle? Or work that idea into one of the other sections.
Having openings that aren't perpendicular to your arms can help too (i.e. generally need more coverage on the outside of your arm than the inside)

Then again, once you add greeblies, details, and paint... that can really set them off and cover/fix any plainness.
