Mavik coldcast helmet
« on: Jul 27, 2017, 01:52 AM »
I have received my new helmet. This is the first cold cast helmet I have had and I am very happy with it so far. I am going to have a very similar paint job to my Target Boba but I intend to leave the ear caps and the back vents exposed metal to help show off the polished helmet.

First I started polishing the helmet with 0000 steel wool. I began on the back side of the helmet to get the feel for it. Once I finished the steel wool I used some aluminum polishing compound from the auto store to further polish it.  I intend to do one or two more passes before paint.

I also started to cut the visor out. I used my dremel with a cutting wheel to do my rough cut then sanded everything down to  where it needed to be. I had a small set of files that I was able to square off the corner of the eyes. I plan to fill the exposed air bubbles with spot putty on the edge of the visor and will probably use some rub'n'buff just along the edge to blend everything together. I also mounted the chicago screws in the ear caps and drilled the corresponding holes in the helmet  so they are all bolted on.

Which one is the Target Boba? The light brown or the darker brown w/ jaig eyes?

I'm curious about this cold casting and will be following your progress to see how it comes out.

So from left to right it's is:

DSB medium, AF dentless Boba cold cast, Target Boba, Boba Maker V3

I have started on my ear cap antenna and also some finishing work on the helmet. I used a couple of tent stakes that are cut down to the size I want and installed in the inner ear cap piece with epoxy putty.

I also went through with spot putty to fill in any pits and air bubbles in the cast where I cut away the visor or sanded on the under helmet ridge.

I like where you're going with the antennae. Though I pegged them as knitting needles at first.
