Right Armor Sizing
« on: Nov 14, 2017, 03:28 PM »
This is a BF 4'6. I plan on using a JF 4' for the cod, thigh, and shin plates. Does this work?

Way too much space between the plates atm.  Supposed to be about an inch between all plates, and a half inch gap around the diamond.  Also, collar plate is currently too low. (which means everything else will need to move up)   Needs to be almost choking you.  Hard to comment on size till place and spacing  are closer to final.  Will also help in next round of picks if you indicate where navel is with a sticker or something.   (ab plate should end an inch or so above belly button)

Ok. Thanks. I'm trying to get all the information I can before I start doing anything more "permanent." I really want to get this right.

Totally get it, I posted plenty of paper template pics before I ever cut any plastic!

So is this better? (The paper probably makes it look more askew than it actually is.)

Much better!

I'm not sure if it's just the angle of the picture, but it looks like everything could still move up a tiny bit.  Basically you want the top edge of the collar plate to sit right on top of your collar bone, and from there you want about a thumb's width of spacing between everything.  Just a note about the chest plates, I know it seems like they should sit directly on the chest but they actually sit more above the chest than actually on it.  For me and others I know, our chest plates sit more above our chests and the tops of our ab plates actually sit right on our chests.  You will want to move the ab plate up a little for sure just to even out the spacing.

The plates look pretty good for overall sizing.  It's good that you're posting here to get everything sorted out before moving forward, it's way easier to adjust templates before starting on the armour :D

The collar should be riding right around the base of your throat.  Your collar still looks a bit too low.  You might also need to trim a little off the outsides of your plates.  They look a little wide right now.  It's hard to be sure with selfies, but most of us have had to resort to selfies at one point or another in our builds.   :)  I'm including a picture that has a very rough suggestion of where to trim your plates.

Yes, I'm in contact with my clan. I did post pics of some templates on Facebook that were actually too big said that I needed to down size. I post these as well there but nothing has been said.
Anyway, thanks for the advice. I'm sure the armor with also look differently on the flak vest. I didn't expect everything to be so high up. How do the other women do it?

So I should down size again? The next size down is a BF 4'1. I feel like that would be too small but I will take your advice on trimming them. Thanks.

Ideally, you want to be able to reach across and touch your opposite shoulder while wearing armor.  If it's too wide, you can't, and trooping in it will be more painful/awkward than neccessary.

Like Sep said.  Chest plates that are too wide end up causing bruises on the inside of the biceps because they keep poking you every time you move your arm that way.  Don't downsize the templates, just trim a little off the outer edges like Havelock suggested.  If you downsize the templates, you lose height as well.  For a thin body type (which I know well as I've got a proportionally long and lean build), you need longer plates with less width.  You've got the right size plates for your height, though I would bring the chest plates a little closer to the collar, and then bring the belly plate up a bit too.  Might have to pull the chest plates a little to the sides, so that ideally all the gap lines between all the plates but the diamond are as close to the same width as you can get, which should be about the width of your thumb.  Rule of thumb, you should be able to stick your thumb between your plates. :)

Thanks. I keep hearing about putting the plates up higher and higher...  Might as well just stick it on my face.  :P
Anyway, my thumbs are pretty skinny so the plates will be close together.

The thumb width is just a literal rule of thumb. You want your spacing to be about an inch between the plates and half that between the chest and the diamond. The key though is that the spacing be consistent all around. If you have 1 1/2" between your ab and lower chest you want that same spacing between the top of the chest and collar. Due to the nature of the female form the space between your plates is going to be tricky and the "rule of thumb" isn't as strictly used for lady armor.

Also, you might not need to move your chest plates up higher. If you have them in a good position and they look right but there's a larger gap between them and the collar you can add filler plates in that gap. Lots of ladies do this and its totally okay.

I think your sizing is good to start with, at least with paper templates. You'll definitely need to trim here and there though, that's just the nature of the beast. I'd strongly suggest making card stock/ posterboard templates and cutting and getting a rough shape on those to get a better idea of what you'll need to do. Flat paper templates work (most of the time) for men but female armor requires more planning and prep work before you start cutting sintra.

I'd also suggest checking out the Female Armor section of the forums and see what information you can get there. Lady armor is haaaaarrrrrdddd to get right, I know from working on my wife's armor.

I heard my name... :P

The plates do indeed sit much higher than expected. When you adjust the templates, add on a cod template and something to stand in as a sash/girth belt. Having them can help ensure the plates are at the right height.

I've adjusted where I'd be reshaping to account for improved movement and comfort.
The outer edges of the chest plates do actually want to look just a touch wide at this point - when shaped that will curve around the outer edge of the breast instead of sticking out.
Another thing you may want to look at is possibly making the collar split into 2 or 3 parts, female shoulder joints are often closer to the neck than masculine which can cause a one part collar plate to impede movement unless it is cut down to ridiculous levels. Splitting it allows each side to move without throwing the entire plate out of place.

I may have actually shortened this a touch too much, but I can't tell exactly without a guide for where to put the cod plate. From the hip and waist positions though, that's where I've placed all the fem armour I've made so far.

Ok, thanks. I thought of taking a picture with the cod but I've seen some do it without so I did the same.
Honestly, this is becoming a little more "complex" than I thought it would be. But I'll get through it and when it's finished it'll probably look decent... hopefully.

I made my first armour nearly nine years ago now and there was far less information out there, I mean, I was the only female in my clan so they had no idea how to help me make shaped armour :P. I've trial and errored my way through some painful conventions with bits rubbing or not sitting right. Taking a little more time at this stage may save you much later (I went through about three versions before realising what all the posts above have been saying). Take your time and you'll do just fine.

At least there are women out there willing to help others on their armor, like you.  :D
