Kama pattern???
« on: Dec 04, 2017, 02:09 PM »
Getting to the point where my wife is gonna try and make us Kamas does anyone have a pattern for them or a tutorial on how to do it. She started learning how to sew just for making our kits so newbie friendly is definitely appreciated

Kamas are more or less just a rectangle with a slit in the middle (which will be the back when worn), or a pair of smaller rectangles, depending on personal preference.  Darts might need to be sewn at the waist(curved triangles) in order to make it drape right over the hips or butt.  You'll notice that pants often have those if you look closely.  That or pleats.  Darts or pleats are likely to be more needed on a female kit than on a male because of the hip shape.

Just make sure you have excess fabric and use trial and error until it looks right. ;)

Rectangles.

Seriously.  My kama is 2 rectangles joined at the top at an angle to create a triangular gap that widens as it goes down my legs.

If you're unsure about a pattern, try it out on a cheap material like muslin before using your more expensive material. It should only be one or two dollars a yard. I literally made two rectangles and folded over the edges enough for a belt to go through. Hope the kamas work out!

Do you have a recommendation on how much fabric to purchase for one?

Depends on the width of the specific fabric.  Assuming it's a typical 45" width (I've seen 24" to 60") you'll need about a yard per layer of fabric.  You should probably get two or three yards to start (whatever width it is), given it's the first time you've made a kama.  That way you'll have plenty left over in case you make mistakes, or some extra to use on various other projects.

I just made two rectangle pockets from an upholstery fabric that I got cheap from JoAnns and then inserted thin craft foam to stiffen them. I attached them with leather and metal loops to my belt. The back Kama is faux leather just cut to fit. I think I got two yards of fabric and two yards of the faux leather but I also used the faux leather for my vest as well. Never used a pattern, just figured out what size to use. Check out my WIP for information.

Hope this helps.
