WIP - Armin's tribute armor
« on: Aug 06, 2020, 10:36 PM »
Hi everyone, my name is Armin Garcia and I'm from BigFang Clan in Mexico. I started my kit a few months ago but I haven't been able to make any more advances recently so I thought I'd post my WIP in english here so I can get more feedback, for my WIP in spanish go here. This is a basic initial design that I made, I call it the Mark I or Light version which will be my initial version for my application.

A bit of backstory on this and the whole tribute theme, my father passed away when I was a kid so this is intended mainly as a tribute for him.The left shoulder plate will have a horizontal black line as a mourning armband, and the right shoulder would have a mythosaur.

As for my progress I decided to get all my soft parts before the armor and weapons, except the waist items which will be the last thing I'll get. A friend made this flight suit for me which is basically an imperial flight suit without pockets and in a different color, I got the work boots at a local department store and the gloves from a local shoe and leather market, I already weathered all these parts and I plan to have extensive battle damage as you could imagine by looking at the pics.

Flight suit chest, I made the white-pinkish stain using chlorine bleach, I don't like how it looks but it will be covered by the vest and I might cover it up with some dry mud too, I also used some black spray paint and coal.

Flight suit lower back. I used white acrylic paint and I didn't like how it looks either but again most will be covered by the vest, the rest and specially the parts at the lower back will be covered with other types of weathering or by a kama I'll make later.

Left glove knuckles, most of the weathering on these was made by rubbing the gloves with sandpaper of different grits.

Left glove fingers

Right glove knuckles

Right glove fingers

Right boot outside shank

Right boot outside shaft

Left boot external shank

Left boot external shaft

For the dry mud effect on the boots I took brown acrylic paint and brushed it with a toothbrush and alcohol to fade the leather but since the toe cap was made of steel I hit it with a brick too and made some superficial slahes as well. I also ran over the flight suit with the car and slashed it a bit, but these two made some cuts in it (one on the chest near the black stain, one on the lower left leg and one on the left bicep) so I had to sew them by hand with a slightly clearer thread. I particularly liked how the cut in the bicep looked after sewing it because it looked like a quick battlefield repair after someone tried to stab me.

The next step for now is the vest which I'll either try to make myself or ask a friend who is a seamstress to make it, I want to use a dark grey duck cloth but I can't find any at the local fabric stores so I might use synthetic leather from the same market where I got the gloves but I didn't want to use more leather other than in my belt(s),gloves and boots. For waist items I want to have a single ammo/holster belt and a green sash but using two belts instead is an alternative. The belt or belts would be made by a friend from brown leather with 4 to 8 Boba pouches,Sabine Wren holsters and an imperial buckle in which I might engrave the mythosaur. If I make a sash I might use a gabardine or tergal fabric.

As for the armor I am going to use 3mm sintra from a local vendor though it is a bit expensive. The helmet (BigFang v3),weapons (dual Westar-35) and possibly gauntlets too will be made by Kal Props. I still have to buy a heat gun, dremel mototool and an engraver from Home Depot, my initial idea was to use magnets for the armor, then velcro but I might use screws and bolts as per Kal's recommendation.

Hope you like my progress here. :mtu: It's not much but I hope to get more things done as soon as I can,for now I'm doing a lot of research and saving money for materials and tools,I might make some more weathring to the flight suit too.

Minor update:

I recently bought faux leather for my flak vest. I was going to use duck cloth but I saw this and just bought it right then and there. I got 2 meters which should be more than enough and maybe even enough for a kama as well. Since it's black and not the light grey I was looking for I had to alter my design a bit for a shiny black vest with matte black plates.

I love to see that you started by weathering the soft parts , it is too often neglected : I m curious to see the rest of the kit !

Thanks! :sabine:

I decided to start with the soft parts so that when I have the armor I'll have somewhere to mount and test the parts. And since I already had most of the soft parts while I saved up for the armor itself I decided to do what I could. It's not my best job but it'll do for now.

After I finish the vest I'll start working on the plates and the final stuff will be the sash and belt which I'll adjust based on how the vest fits. I also have to make a vest now and I have to add a neck seal which I'll make a part of the vest.

Not really an update but I promise I haven't abandoned this project. Real life has sucked a lot lately and I likely won't be able to do much on my kit for now because of school but I wanted to keep you all posted.

I eventually want to apply to the Mountain Ops brigade but my colors were not acceptable so I decided to change them up a little bit. The designs have been updated to the ones you see now. I'll be using dark grey and army green for the armor with some minimal black details. All leather accesories will be of a dark brown color and I will have to get another color of fake leather for the vest since it will be dark brown instead of black now. I may have to change the flight suit too, but I had wanted to change it anyway since the weathering in this one basically ruined it, but at least I learned a few things. The helmet will still be a BigFang v3 and the fangs and jaig eyes will be painted white or a really light grey.  Fortunately the boots and gloves I already had will not have to be changed.

Thank you all for your patience and I will try to get some real progress here as soon as I can. :mtu:
