Anyone make any holograms for their costume before?
« on: Apr 20, 2018, 05:00 AM »
I was designing the gauntlets for my new kit and had a cool idea, however am looking for pointers/tips on how to accomplish it.

The thought is to have a holographic projector. In the past I have just had a translucent piece of plastic that was backlit by blue LEDs.

I was thinking of doing the same, but having another piece of plastic (possibly etched) with an image of Darth Vader or the Emperor to insert into the "projector" and become illuminated making it look like a hologram.

Does anyone have any tips/suggestions for both:
  • (A) how to illuminate the hologram
  • (B) how to make the hologram... etched plastic, etc.?

Thanks!

You can buy them although i've only seen a version with darth sidious...
. Maybe you could cannibalise one and incorporate it into your gaunts.

Where would I begin looking for one? I did a google search but wasn't sure what exactly to search for... and when I came up with some search terms I had no great results. Do you have any good links?

Last time i saw one was on e-bay listed under star wars props. Ok just wentan had a quick search couldn't find the emitter but the holo figures that stand on top are avilable i saw sidious, yoda, obiwan, plo koon..... they're little figures made from clear blue plastic. You sit themon top of a light source and they kinda glow. Hope this helps an i'm looking forward to seeing where you go with this idea

i always thought of making a handheld one with an LED for lighting but for the actual "holpgram" i thought about getting a 3D printed figure printed out of a clear filament, i think the 3D print lines and mistakes would give it the whole classic starwarsy look, just gotta get someone with the model of the charcter and someone who can print with clear filament

alsooo if you have the funds you can go get scanned while in your kit and have a model of your self and get it printed too for a hologram

just an idea tho

and here is proof that clear filament exist im not crazy :P

This is a really cool idea.  I've seen iPhone apps which do 3d scanning.

I think that's one plan I'm going to work to. 3D print a figure with transparent filament and light from below.

I have one mounted in my gauntlet.

I am planning on making my removable through the magical power of magnets.

My giant spindle of translucent blue printing filament arrived today.

How did you do yours?

I love this idea!! My only thought would be if you used "force" magnets, being a solid, they'd block the light going into the figure. Unless they were small enough, but then my brain automatically thinks, what if they're not strong enough?!

I thought about just getting the hologram version of the PotF figrue to use.

I have that thought also... trying to figure the best way to mount them to minimize the light blockage

You could do a base plate on the figure that looks like part of the projector with magnets around the edges. That way the light will shine up through the center clearly.
