Rhya T'laar - WIP & First build
« on: May 12, 2019, 05:46 PM »
Hello!

I have a few threads floating around already for my mando character, including:
concept - https://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=149818.msg1859379#msg1859379
and soft parts - https://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=150637.msg1866052#msg1866052
but nothing for armour yet.

I've done a fair bit in the last year or so, with helmet being basically done, and I'm at about 50% on soft parts. Right now I'd like to share some photos of my armour progress and get some feedback if necessary before moving forward!

This is my armour so far! Made from 3mm sintra.

I do want to redo the gauntlets, and I haven't done a backplate yet, but have been focusing on torso armor

Here is the fit of torso armour, I have tweaked those chest plates so much and am hoping I can move on to filling and painting soon *fingers crossed*

And one more for good measure. It's tough to get them lined up and tacked down properly to take these photos, but when I look at them myself I think they are pretty close already. I am going for the angled plates over cupped, as I just don't care for the cupped look, even though it might suit my build a bit better  :P
I am hoping the actual attachment methods will hold down the corners better once they're complete.

I will probably trim the ab plate down a bit, but I wanted to leave it long until I was certain.

Here's the current leg armour situation. I might scrap the spats, they're just not turning out as I hoped at the moment.

As for soft parts, they're coming along! I want to add a kama and scarf, and may scrap the spats/boot covers for now

I want to thank my Vhetin'Ade clan mates for all their help so far!  :<3:

Your plates are turning out so nice, and your spacing looks solid. I love that your shoulder armor is raised too (something I opted for) instead of down on your arms. And with that said, I also personally love your bucket. The asymmetrical look, color scheme, and randomized weathering is perfect in my opinion. I cannot wait to see your plates finished with the same attention to detail.

I'm happy for you and your progress. Keep it up, cheers!

Oya Vode!

Good to see some solid progress from me on this. You've done some great work! If you're ever in doubt about the spacing, use your index finger as a guide. The width of that is usually sufficient. Also if it helps, get your neck plates locked in first where you're happy with them and they don't "Float" (basically they sit flush with your body), and then move down from there.

We'll look at doing another armour party in June, that hopefully you can join us for.

Keep going with those soft parts! <3

Dyre Vox, thank you so much! I really appreciate your support, as your kit is quite inspiring to me. I am planning to carry the asymmetrical stripe theme down my armor, and look forward to painting the plates. I'm really proud of my bucket and excited to paint the plates to match. Tough part will be weathering soft parts! I opted to have the shoulders raised just to offset any potential 'bobblehead' look. I also just like the look of it better  :)

Shar Daggar - thank you!  ;D

Kaylin, thanks for your help and support! I think the top collar plates are sorted, and I could start on attachments. I have to tweak the chest plates a bit (diamond area) but overall I think I'm in a good place with those. Soft parts ahoy!

Adding a small update, hope it's alright as the last post was mine from some time ago...

I've started working on this again, and following a clan armour party I feel a bit more confident attaching the velcro. Progress below on the two collar plates:

I reshaped the second collar plate a bit, and then it was a bit of trial and error for putting the velcro on, but I think it's looking okay!

Sorry if the photo angle is a bit awkward, I was home alone this evening. The spacing looks fairly even in person but curves and angles seem to make it appear wonky in the photo.

Chest plates will be trimmed a bit on the side (no photo at the moment) but I think it will help them appear less wide. Will hopefully work towards getting them placed this week too! I will also be adding a few updates to my soft parts thread  :like:

Alrighty! I've been slowly working on this here and there, so here's a bit of an update.

I was able to trim and reshape the chest plates a bit, I think they're looking good! Can't wait to start painting them. I have also started attaching the velcro to the vest and mounting them, which really helped to get them looking like they were placed properly. I might be making a new vest though, so I'll have to redo the attachments...

I have the ab plate mostly ready to go, it just needs to be trimmed.

You can also see my new girth belt here!

I see that the collar plate is floating a bit in the top photo, so that will be secured properly.

I also bondo'd and started sanding my leg armour, as well as the chest plates. One step closer to painting. (Since taking this photo I've sanded the spot putty off  :like: )

The next step depends on the vest I suppose, but I also have to make a back plate and gauntlets. I have an idea for a two part gauntlet that overlaps a bit, and closes either with velcro, magnets or elastic. I will try to come up with a sketch to share!
