Late Crusader phase one
« on: Jun 12, 2019, 10:24 PM »
I have posted in the Concept threads already...and seems I'm on the right track.
Limited on funds right now as we are saving to buy a house. With that most everything I will be putting into this first build is going to be a lot of DIY and plenty of scavenging for materials and supplies.

I'm currently aiming for a Late Crusader Era Merc.  Base idea is metal armor(aluminum sheeting scavenged off a construction site), with leather strapping(lefover from some RenFair costuming and knife sheath making), and fur.

Following is my current Concept art I will be running with.

The next one was my first sketch out with descriptions of the pieces and aspects of my proposed kit

The helmet will be built up from a hardhat leftover from previous employment. Using metal as the main medium. Inspiration is from AC:Odyssey's Spartan armor as well as the following helmet found in another's WIP post that caught my eye. And, yes, Mando first, inspiration second.

Some things I hope to do with this kit may or may not work, things like paint schemes on the metal surface of the armor.

Some things that I'm not sure of as yet...

I want a Cape of sorts(I like capes), i just am undecided on if i want to go with a full cape or just a single shoulder drop.

I will be using the loincloth on the front, but I am thinking of doing a sort of layered strips across the back. I think I will need to sketch that out in the next few days to see what it could look like.

Going to also be doing a double stacked ammo belt around my left thigh. Although, if that doesn't want to work out, I will be going with a bandolier across the chest(really do like the idea of having it on my thigh).

It may be a couple weeks before I get to a point of starting this build. I've got a few other projects I have started and need to finish before beginning a new one. Just figured I'd get this thread started to get as much feedback, pointers, and critique as possible before I start the consruct.

Armor base...?
This is the aluminum sheeting that I was planning on using for my armor pieces.

I have a small suspicion that this might be a bit on the thin side to want to keep it's shape after forming.
Has anyone else went with metal as their material base? Do you think this material is usable for this project?

Just ran across the post about the different materials that can be used as armor and all the pros and cons and measurement suggestions...now just need to go measure the thickness of that metal.

You've got a solid plan.  I don't know anything about metal working.  The aluminum does look a bit on the thin side but I'm no materials expert.  It's going to come down to how easy it is bend after its been shaped.  If crossing your arms bends the plates that would be a bad thing.

I'm looking forward to watching this!  Good Luck Vod!

With the help of an awesome and beautiful wife, I can start lining out my plates into pattern form.

Got the font plates patterned, with some minor changes as I move into the next stage.
And got a possible set of back plates done, in case I don't utilize a full cape.

Well done.  Nice templates.

But remember to not double post.  If you need to add something then you can modify a post rather than adding a new post.

Nice Ink by the way.  :8):

Thank you for the encouragement.

As far as double posting goes, since I've started this thread I don't believe a double post has happened.
Unless I am unclear what exactly qualifies as a double post.
As far as I see there is no repeats of posting within this thread. And I have stopped adding content under the thread I had started in the Concepts threads.

If I am misunderstanding what a double posting is, please point me to clarification.
But I'm fairly certain I'm in compliance now.

Thank you.

Double posting is defined as , "posting more than once in the same day, if there is no response to the first post."

Basically it comes down to make one good long update a day.  If you need to go back and add something then you can modify your first post.   If some one responded to your post then feel free to respond with a new post.

It took me awhile to get used to it.  Now it's second nature.

Progress, finally
It has been awhile since I've done anything towards my armor.  Family and life has slowed me down some...as well as I took available time to get work done on my weapons.

Finally decided to cut some leather for the chest this past weekend. And i am very satisfied with the look it is giving.

No plates are attached as yet, just cut. Still have to dye the natural leather too.

The whole of the chest falls to about my waistline...unsure if that qualifies as including an plates. I will have a wide belt setup that will sit just below where the cest plates stop, so I am hoping it will fly.
Will get it strapped up and mountable soon...if we go on a lockdown due to this virus I will be having plenty of time to devote to this.
