Death Watch Super Commando Soft PArts WIP
« on: Jun 20, 2019, 06:21 PM »
Greeting Vode
Just sharing my wip on the soft parts of my build.  Thank god for my amazing wife who did all the sewing and work. Helps being married to a clothing designer.
Though, she was a little outside her zone as she usually only sews for children.

As a base, i ued hospital scrubs, i ordered in white so i can dye later to get the colour i want from the suit later.
I bought two long sleeve shirts, then my wife cut the sleeve on one and then sewed the long sleeve in underneath to give it that two shirt look. The p[art by wrist will be under gloves and gauntlets, so was told it was actually a great feature

Here is a close up of the second sleeve portion

Im a bit on the chestier side, so my wife had to build the vest with may darts to accomodate. this is a first test fitting of the vest.

I dont have any pics of the final version with sleeves sewn on, but it needed to be a little more snug, local russalor made the modifacations to it at an armor party, thanks again for the assist.

I will get some more pics and post up.

Oya Vode,

No worries about the assist. That's what I'm here for. Do you happen to know what type of material those scrubs are made of? Most scrubs are a cotton/polyester blend, so there might be some issues with the dying process depending on what dye you use.

So far, so good though.

its a 60/40 poly cotton blen, i was advised to use aa poly dye. its formulated to dye poly blends exactly as needed

there is a colour chart here for how to get the right colour. Just been going back and forth about which colour is best to dye too
https://www.ritdye.com/color-formulas/?type=203&hue=0&collection=0&pantone=0

so far the colours i have thought about are
Golden Mist
https://www.ritdye.com/color-formulas/golden-mist-2/?type=203&hue=0&collection=0&pantone=0

Sweet Corn
https://www.ritdye.com/color-formulas/sweet-corn/?type=203&hue=0&collection=0&pantone=0

ButterCream
https://www.ritdye.com/color-formulas/buttercream/?type=203&hue=0&collection=0&pantone=0

Soybean
https://www.ritdye.com/color-formulas/soybean/?type=203&hue=0&collection=0&pantone=0

Bleached Sand
https://www.ritdye.com/color-formulas/bleached-sand/?type=203&hue=0&collection=0&pantone=0

the image from the cartoon makes this a hard choice, not sure what is going to be acceptable

I'd go with Sweet Corn myself, and do it in multiple layers. The Golden Mist is a close second. You could do a combination of them both if necessary. The rest, tone wise, are not quite the same.

Do test swatches first though, just so that you know how much and for how long in order to build up the colour.

Looking good so far Kevin!

Now to add some weathering to it. I think I gave you the link for tea staining and how to do so.

Again, use test bits first, and start off light. Its easier to build rather than take away. The shoe polish will also help grime this up a little more, along with the eyeshadows. Dirty and grime will naturally settle into areas that have creases and folds, so hems and side stitches. Legs are usually the dirtiest, while the collar is the lightest....there is some room to have it darker at the collar from sweat and skin oils.

Hope this helps! As always, do test swatches first. I find it really only works on natural fabrics and not on synthetics.

oh, interesting it doesnt work on synthetics.
My suit is 60/40 poly cotton blend. so this likely wont work right?

You'll get some staining. Again, as I said, do testing first.

Some updated shots of my flak vest with weathering on it
Applied white primer to shoulders and appropriate areas, then with eye shadows, brushed on seams to weather further
Thank goodness for the watchful guidence of local russalor, walking em through all the steps

So fun fact.  The black tea steeped for 24 hours does not work on synthetics.  I used ten tea bags for one litre of water, and it just washed right out afterwards.
So moved on to experimenting and found some wonderful options at the local artists emporium.  Worked wonders, and stayed even through the wash.
Im going to do another coat of the products i used just to work it in spots that didnt get first time. or darker in spots that need it.
Bottoms

Top- i wasnt thinking and the inner sleeve is pristine under the top short sleeve, so that will need a gradient

Thanks for looking
