Asenath kit 3 (Early Crusader)
« on: Nov 19, 2019, 05:07 PM »
It's that time of year again when I start working on a new kit!  This time I'm going for something completely different, and working toward an early crusader build.  I've wanted to do an EC build since I first joined, and I finally feel like I have a good enough handle on things to turn my vision for this kit into reality.  I'm super excited to get started on it!

So my concept sketch is VERY rough, and incomplete.  I haven't decided on what I want the gauntlets/bracers to look like yet, but I'm currently leaning toward lightly armored leather bracers, covered with sparse linen wraps.  I also don't have a concept for the knees yet, but I'm confident that inspiration will come!

My vision is very primitive and witchy, like the barbaric Mandalorian version of a Nightsister, with an equal distribution of hammered copper, bone, and leather elements.  The mask, one shoulder, and the center section of the back armor will all be hammered copper (or at least it will look like it!).  The remaining shoulder, both thighs, and the upper and lower sections of back armor will all be bone (or bone-looking).  The chest armor, the strapping around the sides, and the yoke for the back armor will all be kodiak leather, sewn together with sinew to keep a primitive look.  The flight suit will be heavily weathered beige, for the kama I'm thinking some very lightweight buckskin or goat leather (dark brown), and the armored loincloth will be linen (light brown), with some hammered copper and bone accents (I see coyote ribs in my future!).

The mask will attach directly to my cowl (dark brown) - I'm working on a design concept to make the mask easily removable and allow the cowl to stay up without the mask (because I will need to hydrate frequently in this toasty kit!).

For the weapons, I am planning on building a custom spear and some small bladed weapons that I have some exciting ideas for.  Right now, I'm thinking I don't want to incorporate a blaster or slugthrower, but as always I reserve the right to change my mind  :P

I have lots of other details planned, but I'll bring those up when I have more to show!

Here is the initial concept:

I don't have much progress to show, but I did start prototyping bodice patterns.  I'm using some heavy faux leather for the prototypes, but the actual armor will be constructed from some beautiful kodiak leather that I have *just* enough of.  The first pattern I created is different from the sketch, but fits my body very well:

The second prototype is like my concept, and I think I like the look better (the edges of the leather on either style would be raw and ragged, not nicely cut as they appear on the prototypes):

I'm looking at getting these boots, and the only modification I think I'll need to make would be some more weathering on the straps, and covering the lettering on the metal buttons with bone or stone cabochons:

I also picked up some fabric for the cowl and loincloth, and these awesome copper links that I want to use to attach the sections of back armor:

I'd really love some feedback on the basic concept, as it seems to be slightly different than the typical EC.  When I picture it in my head, it very much fits into the era and complies with the CRLs, but I'd rather check on things before I build them rather than get shot down later.

Thanks vode!

Looks like a great start/idea. Looking forward to seeing this develop.

Thank you!

I made up some shoulder armor that I'm pretty pleased with so far.  The right shoulder will be a hammered copper finish - I have the rough pits ground out for the hammered effect, and I plan on doing a couple coats of filler primer to fill them out, then brown primer, then hammered copper, and finally a blackwash to bring out the texture.  This plate is 3mm sintra:

The left shoulder is the shell of some unfortunate creature.  The white part is 6mm sintra, and the black shell ridge is 3mm:

I also cut out some back armor real quick this morning, and it's not shaped yet, but I taped up a prototype of what I'm thinking for the harness system.  The angle, fit, and length of the straps need to be adjusted, but the overall idea should work.  The plates are not shaped yet.  The upper plate is 6mm sintra, and the bottom two are 3mm.  Top and bottom plates will be "bone" and the middle one will be the same hammered copper as the right shoulder:

Test fit of the precariously taped and pinned harness system.  Again, the leather parts are just prototypes - the final chest piece will be heavy kodiak leather, and the strapping will likely be either alligator or goatskin:

The back plates will be attached with the copper links from my first post - I'm not sure this will hit the 2/3 coverage requirement for back armor, but I love the look of these smaller, wider-spaced plates.  If necessary, I will probably back the three plates together in leather to fulfill the coverage requirement.

From the sides - the straps connecting to the chest armor need to be moved down to stop the weird sagging in the chest piece (I pinned them in the wrong place for the photos), and they will buckle on the sides for adjustability.  Also, the shoulders will have straps connecting to the bottom of the plates and buckling around the biceps.

Next up on the to-do list:

-Make armored loincloth
-Draft pattern for mask
-Draft pattern for cowl
-Create ab armor
-Design gauntlets and knees

If any of you EC experts out there have any advice or see any potential issues, please chime in!

Looks good so far, in my extremely rookie opinion.  I think the idea to have a back leather piece would fit great with your concept and complete that CRL. I too am making an EC, with a pretty much totally different concept, which is great for the EC.  I love your mix of hammered copper and creature leftovers. ;D  Also, don't forget about your waist pieces.

Thank you!  I ended up re-making the back armor to cover more area, but I will probably still do the leather backing anyway.  I won't forget my waist items!  I'm still on the hunt for a good belt, and I've got my kama started already.  Not sure yet if I'll add a sash or not, we'll see how it all looks together when I get a bit farther along.  Good luck with your build, I really need to check out your WIP :)

I've made a little progress on this kit, so this update will be picture-heavy.

Here's everything I have going with this kit so far all laid out, including a prototype spearhead that I'm kind of liking the look of so far:

Here's a closeup of the start of the detail painting on the "bone" thigh plates.  I still need to do more shading overall and stipple the upper edge of the right thigh, and once that's done I'll seal that layer and add a black/brown wash for weathering.  Also pictured is the goat hide that will become my kama, and the beginnings of my armored loincloth.  The copper plates will probably be mounted on a leather back, and I'm planning on also adding some coyote ribs on top of the copper to give it some more depth:

I cut two new plates for my back armor (the top two) because I ended up not liking the size of the previous ones.  These are wider, so the coverage on my back will be better.  Once I get the leather harness system built I'll take a picture of the plates taped on for size reference.  I also realized that the upper plate needs one more base coat before I can start the detail painting:

Closeup of the left shoulder - still not sure how I want to paint this guy so it's just a base coat for now:

Closeup of the leather chest armor with the shoulders.  I wasn't happy with the texture on one section of the copper plate, so I added some more spot putty and will repaint later.  The bodice is hand-stitched with artificial sinew, and I still need to figure out the hose attachment to the bodice.  I'm not sure yet if I want to create a life support box or just attach the hose directly to the leather:

Closeup of the mask - still need to figure out the hose attachment and decide whether or not it will get horns added, so it's going to stay unpainted for a while:

Test fit of the mask with a prototype cowl.  The actual cowl fabric is much nicer looking, and is similar in color to the leather I'll be using for the kama.  I'm thinking the mask will attach directly to the cowl via magnets, so I can remove it easily and pull the cowl down like a hood.  I'm hoping the loose-fitting cowl will be acceptable!

Cowl and mask from the side:

Cowl from the back:

Next up on the to-do list:

-Cut and shape ab plate
-Design and fabricate bracers
-Finish armored loincloth
-Design and fabricate knees

I honestly am not sure why I bother making a to-do list if I never manage to stick to it .  I haven't done too much on this kit in the last few weeks, but I did get my flight suit, boots and gloves, so I figured a soft parts test run was in order.  I still don't have the armor harness done (because I haven't been able to order the hardware I need yet), but basting pins are sufficing for test fit purposes.

Here's all the soft parts together so far.  Still using the prototype cowl, the real one will be a darker color similar to the kama. Kama and loincloth will be mounted to a thin leather belt, and another belt will be worn on top of them to hold the pouch and strap. The strap will eventually be turned into a holster for an air filtration canister, connected to the mask via a hose:

And from the back (the shoulder straps are just pinned at the moment so it's fairly crooked in the picture):

Here's a prototype I threw together for a pauldron harness.  The "shell" that serves as the left shoulder bell will be mounted to a partial rabbit skin, which will be sewn to leather straps.  The straps will connect at the chest and back to metal rings for mobility:

And pauldron rig prototype from the back (the angle of the shoulder strap needs to be tweaked, I know):

I'm hoping next week I will get to order the hardware needed to finish the harness and pauldron rigs, and make the actual cowl.  Once that is done I can work on the mask attachment, the hose attachment and air filtration canister, and all the stuff on my previous to-do list.
