Nika's Weapon Thread W.I.P.
« on: Aug 21, 2018, 12:07 AM »
My first W.I.P. Thread, I've never really made any props, so I'll have a plethora of questions.

I got these two Westar-34/Jango toy blasters on Ebay for $3.99 together! I'm going to keep the wiring/sounds inside, I don't mind the cheesy blaster sound(if that's ok?) What do you use to 'seal' blasters? I've seen some say they seal it before painting. I noticed when its sealed it's more smooth looking.

I was also thinking of having like a flame thrower kind of blaster. I want to find an old pressure washer gun thingy. Are flame thrower guns approved prop weapons? (Answered: Yes they are.)

Scuff the jangos with 300 or 400 grit sandpaper, then primer, then paint.

Flame thrower style weapons are allowed, just don't build an actual flame thrower. Keep In mind you need tubing and a reservoir somewhere on the kit to make it make sense, and you will need to add greeblies and modify the pressure washer. PVC pipe may be your friend here too.

Thank you Sep Ho’ban for the tips n’ advice! I’ll get sandpaper first for my Jango blasters. For primer, I’ve never bought any before, does it come in a spray bottle or paint bottle?

I promise I won’t build an actual flamethrower :) I went back to the pawn shop today for the pressure washer thing but unfortunately it goes with the whole pressure washers that they have for sale outside. I’ll edit my first post with the one I saw at Walmart later :) I’ll look for tubing/hoses and bottle/reservoir for flamethrower. I really want to do a flamethrower :)

Spray Can, if you're going to use spray-paint to apply your colors, be sure to buy the same brand primer as the paint you're going to use.  If you're adding color with acrylics, primer brand won't matter as much.

Thank you vode!

I've only been working on my two Jango blasters at the moment. No flamethrower for now. I put bondo on my blasters, sanded, primed it with a coat of a really cool hammered metal spray paint that was recommended to me from a friend, and I spraypainted today one side black, tomorrow I will do the other side. I can't wait to sand and paint/add battle damage after finishing the black! I'm thinking of doing wraps around the front of the handle, not sure what color wraps yet, but I added a picture of where I'd put some wraps. I want to add some kind of small red accent color, but I'm not sure where.

I got these yellow reflective adhesive strips from Walmart, I was thinking of adding them like in the image below. I think they had red ones too, not sure if those would look better. I drew on some brown wraps, and a possible small trophy or just beaded string on the end.

*Update below Nov. 22, 2019*

So months later I went back to the same pawn shop, and behold, they were selling the pressure washer gun by itself now that I wanted to use for a flamethrower prop! I have no idea to take the heavy stuff out from the inside... I want to add some kind of fuel looking canister attached to it or either on the back or side of my belt with a hose attached to the flamethrower gun. I really like the look of the barrel. I'm not sure what else to add or take away to make it look more Star Wars-y. I will have to maybe sand off some of the words on the side of it too.

At Lowe's I saw this pvc thing. It looks like it could be a detonator. I'll have to sand off the words. I'll have to close the ends since they're open & make the top clip onto my belt. I want to put a red button on it somewhere, maybe on the side? If this turns out good, I may get more! One of my friends on Instagram used this to make detonators as well I found out!

Lastly, this one isn't really something I NEED to make, but it would be a cool piece. This is in the mandalorian armor smith's tool cabinet. I just like the look of it. Not sure what to make it out of?

PS: I forgot to mention I forgot to do the toothpaste method or anything before spray painting my westar-34s/Jango Fett blasters black ;-; Should I repaint them the gray, do the toothpaste and then add the black, OR should I rub some silver in certain areas? That gun metal spraypaint was so cool, so I'm partially considering not having it black anymore, and just do a blackwash over the gun metal gray?

Just a suggestion for sanding these (as I recently did the same). Take a Dremel with sand add-on to get rid of these words. It's much easier than trying it by hand.

Thank you! I’ve used a dremel before, it does sound much easier to get those words off. Sounds easy enough to do this weekend  ;D

Update: Nov. 25, 2019

I used a dremel to sand it. Now it's really scratched where I sanded it. Would I use bondo to make it smooth?

That's not really necessary, ner vod. Just wet sand with a higher grit sandpaper (I like 220!). It's not gonna remove anything, but it will smooth out those rough scratches.

I would use Bondo-brand "Glazing and Spot Putty" (only $4 at Walmart for a tube). Let it dry/harden and then sand that down by hand until it's smooth.

I'm new here but I do a little bit of smithing in my spare time, basically it looks like a brick layers hammer with a bend in the back and the tongs are literally polished smithing tongs.

@Ritpak Ordo, I would love to see some pictures, thank you!

And @3mandos, yes that's the same bondo I have, yay! I'll use that to smooth over the dremel scratches on the pipe thing(thermal detonator).

UPDATE JANUARY 12, 2020
Here is a crude coloring of a concept look for my Westars. Leather strapping around the handle(I have a bunch of leather scraps just for this). Black color and metallic gray/silver, and not sure about red.
