New pack for me!
« on: Oct 22, 2009, 06:32 PM »
Since my little one has outgrown the birikad, I have to come up with a new pack.

I like the design of the hardshell backpacks that are available, but I a) do not want to get something that looks like a hardshell cyclist pack and b) do NOT want to spend that kind of money for something that I'd have to customize out the wazoo.

So, I think I'm going to build one using the things I like form the hardshell pack design.

So far, all I have is a design sketch:

It's a very pretty design, but are you sure it's safe/comfortable for a baby that's been outgrowing carriers to be in something that's built from scratch? I'm not sure how much anatomical research goes into making a baby pack, but they always seem pretty specifically designed. :) I'd be worried about it falling apart under weight or being uncomfortable, or holding the baby's back at an odd position. It might be best to build around a purchased pack.

 The "baby" is 3 years old and over 40 lbs and will no longer be in the birikad (see my icon - that's a year and a half ago, and I built it on a basic baby pack framework). that would be why I'm designing a pack for my armor now. No more birikad.  ;D

This is an equipment pack for me.

Yeah,Ver'ta built an awesome pack and lugged her verd'ika around SDCC 08 with it! I sadly didnt get to see her armorin person although I met her and her husband and they rocked! But I saw the pix and it was amazing.

I'msure the new pack willbe equally as cool... minus the mini-mando of course!

Ah, got it. The way you worded your post made it sound like you were upgrading to a 'bigger model.' :P That, and your drawing looked like it had arm and leg holes to me... :D

That aside, it's a beautiful pack, I love how it follows the curve of the back.

That's the idea. While I like the basic design aesthetic of the Bobblebee hardside packs, I'm not willing to spend 2-300 dollars for something that may not fit my short torso well and that will require extensive modding and painting. Just ... no  ;D

Also, I'm fond the scratchbuilt stuff.  :D

if you keep an eye out, you can get some of these at a steal. mine was under 50 bucks & that included shipping. right now, someone has the hardshell part of the pack up for 10 bucks. look here:

they say it's the megalopolis but I don't see the lower triangle mounts so it may be a peoples delite

the same seller has one in chrome as well for 50.00:
