Sabine's Gauntlet (Also over-engineered)
« on: Mar 12, 2020, 03:22 PM »
In keeping with the theme of over-engineering my props (see: Over-engineered Thermal Detonators), I've also been working on making Sabine's Gauntlet a bit more... computer-y. This is what it looks like right now, after just getting it bodged together enough to work at C2E2 2020:

So far it features such exciting features as:

  • It lights up!
  • It (usually) tells the date and time!
  • It can read files from an SD card!
  • It can make my thermal detonators blink (in theory).

I reached the limits of the little microprocessor inside, and half the electronics on it are added after the fact, so I'm working on a V2. I've sent an email to the people at CrystalFontz where I got the display to see if they can make an inverted (light green on dark) display, and I'm currently drafting a set of new features I'd want it to support. Future (near-future?) plans include:

  • Two-way prop communication for helmet fans, lights, thermals, my friend's thermals...
  • ^ That'll also alert me when I need to charge up some batteries, or tell me how long into a troop I've got before I lose helmet fans.
  • Images + text read from SD card.
  • Notepad entry (there's a PS2 keyboard connection)
  • Push-to-talk / radio control for my helmet com thing that is also still living in a breadboard

I thought I had posted a build thread for this somewhere, but I can't recall. I'll dig through RL's forums and see if I'm not cross-posting from last-year me.

Also, for those interested in the guts of it:

  • ATmega 328p
  • 2500mAh LiPo battery with on-board charge control
  • Holtek HT12E encoder + 433MHz TX module*
  • Loads of 3D printing and spray paint

Oh! If there is any interest in the 3D models or print files, let me know. Right now they're a bit specific to this project, but if you just want Sabine's gauntlet with a painted or printed backdrop or whatever, it should work well enough, just pardon the extra holes. I'm going to refine the actual gauntlet part of the gauntlet, since it's very difficult to slide over my hands, so I might make a latch closure.

The Story So Far...

Here's a dump of the photos so far, from breadboard to first (current) prototype, though I don't have photos of the extra stuff glued on top (SD card, etc.)

^ The first build, with an Arduino and a breadboard. Hey, it lights up!

^ Moved from an arduino + breadboard to a very messy perfboard setup. In retrospect, This is Not The Way.

^ Custom PCB arrived, and  most of the components were fit in. The missing items on left side weren't populated yet since I was afraid of hand-soldering surface mount things, but since then I got a hot air station and it's my new favorite thing!

Anyway, thanks for reading! I'll update this if/when I make the next revisions.  :sabine:

This is freaking AMAZING!! I LOVE practical props like this. I am in the middle of a rather large electronics project for my helmet which includes some Adafruit goodness, not a functional screen like this, but I have a my phone in my gauntlet and if all goes well, I'll be able to control certain gadgets from that. Looking forward to seeing what else you do!

Heck yeah! My roommate has the phone-in-gauntlet thing going with his Mando kit, and it's super fun. I'd love to see what you've got going on in your helmet!

I've posted other updates in the parent thread on the Darksaber and thermal detonators. Right now I got my thermal detonator circuit playing audio clips, but got distracted beefing up the audio circuit to play some smooth tunes. I'll leave those files in there, so my thermals may end with a bang, or they might end with some sweet tunes. Who knows?!

Ya, the large datapad on my wrist certainly draws attention and even more so when I show off some of the screens I have for it. I just updated my WIP thread for my helmet interior project if you'd like to take a look it's actually in this same board...but here's the link
