Painting Weathered Leathered Pouches Question
« on: Jun 04, 2020, 04:11 PM »
I've acquired a set of Serbian military surplus ammo pouches for my belt.  I'm going to recolor them black for the overall costume, but I would like to get some guidance on the best methods.  A friend of mine suggested using Angelus acrylic leather paint with deglazer beforehand and finisher after since that was how she had repainted some leather boots for a costume, but I have seen suggestions elsewhere for using leather dye instead.

Does anyone have any pros/cons that would lead them to recommend one method over the other?

Looking at the pouch, it looks like smooth, natural colored leather that you could dye. I'd suggest picking up some kiwi leather dye for shoes as an easy option to test it. If you can dye it, that'll hold better than paint, while keeping the leather looking good.

I'll second dye, after deglazing.  If you need to replace the finish sealer, use shoe polish after dyeing.

Good info! I have those same pouches that I need to make darker brown, so now I've got a plan there  :)

Great job! Does it fit with the rest of your soft parts?

Yeah.  I think it matches the other leather parts (belt and cross-draw holster) pretty well.

Hey, by the way, thanks for the details here. I just dyed my pouches last night. Waiting for them to fully dry in this humidity before I put the finishing coat on, but they came out great! Really appreciate your tips- I had 2 old ones and 2 brand new ones that were light tan, and now they're all the same color and look properly aged.
