Mavik Winter Soft Parts
« on: Jun 11, 2020, 12:46 AM »
Got started on my soft parts for a new kit. I will be having a light grey vest made for me. I have received my white coveralls for a flight suit  and will possibly be using an old white girth belt I used for a retired kit. below is the concept are I am using  and a picture of the boots I got in

I have my base ammo belt complete now I am playing around with different ideas for pouches or other details. I started with a blank of veg tan leather and added some stitching detail to it and the color

I also have started the boot covers that will be going over the top section of the main boot that will hopefully emulate the rebel hoth trooper boot look.

The main piece I did complete was a trechvest made from fleece to emulate the snowtrooper duster. I used a pattern I had from one I use with my current kit

For your boot wraps, are they going to just wrap around your shins or will they drop over the heel of the boots? I'm planning something similar and I'm curious how you're going to do it so I can copy it. Do you plan to put attach the wraps to your flightsuit legs to keep them from twisting around?

They should stop about ankle height two or three inches over the top of the boot. I'm not sure about twisting. I may fasten them to the boot to prevent that..

Also a small update. I am planning to have some hip flaps come off of the belt that I patterned out. I began tooling some designs using the Ori'ramikad symbol as the base . It was a pretty fun project I have done one or two small tooling projects in the past, and this was by far the most detailed. still definitely have room for improvement but overall I am pretty happy with the results.

This is the idea I drew up.

here it is after tracing it and cutting it into the leather. the piece still needs dye to match the belt.

I have the belt mostly finished. I like it the way it is the only thing I am thinking  of adding at this point is some pouches that would sit on the back mostly so I could still carry my phone and some other small things for longer troops.

This turned out great. I'd ask you to make something for me but I don't want to derail your progress on your own stuff cuz its coming out so good.

I used some pre-quilted fabric for some boot covers to make the boot a bit higher and call back to the trooper boots on Hoth with the straps.  I will have to fine tune the straps a bit to make sure velcro isnt showing from the back.

Thanks for the comments,I got the suede I am using in for the neck seal and got to work.

I stared buy drawing out  six  strips that are about 2x24"

once those were cut I used a small amount of contact cement to fold over the edge to give them a bit more finished look and a little more depth for the neck seal ridges.

After that I layered them up to the width I needed using contact cement once again to attach them.

Next I trimmed the excess off and added a panel where I will be adding the velcro for it to close in the back.

All that should be left other then the velcro is adding the skirt at the bottom to be tucked under the vest so it doesnt come loose while trooping and making sure all the edges are finished.

Finally have some much needed updates. I finished up the neck seal. I ended up removing one layer from it since it was sitting a bit high on me.

I got done with my flight suit this weekend. I removed all the pockets and cut down the collar so there will be less fabric around the neck. The main modification I wanted to make was to add some suede patches for added detail once the armor is sitting on top of it. Not much of them will be visible but they will sit on the thighs and shoulders.

Slightly awkward photo but it shows how the patches come together with everything.

Are you putting fabric edging on hard armor or are you doing a soft cod?

Neither, its a rubber trim similar to the edging on ROTJ stormtroopers. It will be on the cod and backplate.

My soft parts are just about wrapped up as far as fabrication goes. I will go through what I have been able to get done this week.

Gloves- I received some flight gloves and wanted to make them fit the kit a bit better and go along with the Arctic theme more. I sewed some of the quilted fabric I have else where on the kit to the back of the hands and also painted the leather on the palms white.

Vest- For the vest I decided to try my hand at making a leather one. Luckily I had an old unused vest that I was able to cut up and use to pattern out the leather vest.  I started with some white leather but then did a grey wash on it which helped bring some of the leather grain out and also darkened it up some to help the plates stand out on the vest.

Overcoat/kama- When I did my initial soft parts try on I noticed the overcoat was being pulled to far back for not having any of the armor mounted to the vest.  I disassembled all the pieces and then added some grey pleated panels to the vest section. Which I actually prefer the look of to the original. I also cut out a new Kama to have a bit more fabric. I figure if this kit is made to operate in a cold environment a bigger kama helps  with the believability of it.

The below is the test fitting I did. Just an FYI only the shoulder bells are mounted how they are going to be.  I got some suggestions to bring the sleeves in a bit and I also want to sew down the extra fabric on the back for added mobility so it doesn't come out from the side of the back plate when I have it mounted.  I may be a bit less flexible in armor but I cant imagine it will impact that much.

Also thinking I may make a new belt in white or grey.
