Trying something new!!!

Ever since the Mandalorian aired I've loved the new era. As a bonus, it will be a lot more comfortable to troop in than my current kit 

With some photoshop magic, here's the rough idea. Almost all of the armor will be 3d printed for this one, so I've got a lot of sanding in my future. I'm sure the design will shift a bit as I go.

First little pieces!

I accidentally sized the first hand plate a little too small, but I resized and got something much better  Printing vertically instead of flat also helps hide the layer lines and make them easier to fill in the painting stage.

These are fresh off the printer with no cleanup except minimal support removal. ESUN PLA+ filament.





For soft parts so far I've got these boots already and just ordered these gloves. I'll likely end up dying them a bit darker to match the boots.

Alright time for a big ol image dump.

Got the shoulders printed and I've been working on getting them smooth. I start with a rough sanding of the print, then a thick layer of filler primer. Then another quick sanding round and another thick coat of filler primer. Used some glazing putty around the edges were the supports left some gaps, then hit with normal black primer, another round of sanding, then grey primer. I'll tweak a few spots  and give it another round of sandpaper before I start the actual paint but I'm pretty happy with it.













While I was working on the shoulders, I also put some work into the handplates. Since they're smaller they didn't need as much time to fill. Hit with one round of filler primer, sanded, then normal primer, base colors, and weathering. I like to bang up the base payer of paint and put a few divets in pre weathering washes so the dirt has some good places to settle.









I also started the chest printing but the upper chest had an alignment issue and I got stuck with this weird gap. Likely from a bit of lifting from the build plate during printing. I'm going to reprint in a different orientation to try and correct it, as the models line up perfectly.

As far as the chest plate goes, I had a similar issue on mine. Or at least, so I thought. Turned out I didn't take the curve of the chest plate into account when pre assembling it.

Yeah I tried the mess with it but I think it's just that I printed it standing on those inside edges. Something warped.

Got the shoulders all smoothed out and started the real paint! Layered silver, grey primer, red, then iron. Masked off with salt to get some realistic chipping, as I'm trying to do more dirt damage than crazy chipping with this kit.





Of course my painters tape didn't get the memo and decided to ruin things by tearing up a ton of the red layer Fixed it with a second pass of red in a few areas and then we were off to weathering!!! I added back some silver to my chipped areas and did a heavy black wash + rust details.







Here's the pile of progress so far! Taking a small break from the chest plate while I print the helmet. Getting a lot of stringing for some reason so I'll have to tweak my settings a bit.

It's the Ironside bucket! It's sold on this thread here  So far it's been great to print!

Bucket is 99% printed! Just the keyslots left which are printing now. I'm very happy with the quality of these files. Xol did a fantastic job.

Also finalized the bucket color scheme and decided on a character name

Fiberglassed a few inside spots for stability (especially the dome which I had to print in 4 parts). Then got started with the bondo glazing putty to smooth the majority of the print lines! Usually I'd use just filler primer and a ton of sanding like the shoulders but the bucket would take a good 3-4 cans of primer due to size and detail. This will get the majority of the lines after the first pass of sanding and then I can can focus on smaller parts with filler primer.





Obviously not all covered yet but I wanted to let the first half dry before I turned it over too much.

Continuing slowly but surely filling this beast. Got a good first pass at sanding and then a coat of filler primer! Still need to touch up some spots so it'll likely be at least two more solid coats with some putty here and there. Especially the dome seams.

Update time!

Gave the bucket a silver coat as I find it's the least forgiving when it comes to imperfections. Found I needed a bit more sanding in some high spots and the dome seam still wasn't perfect in places. Gave the entire thing a thorough wet-sanding (hence the visible lines from the layers of paint) and filled the dome seam more. Hoping to get another primer coat and possibly they first color coat on it today.





Also reprinted the chest and finally got good connecting edges by changing the print orientation. Only downside is it will take more filler now. Got most of the way through the first go of glazing putty until I ran out. I'll pick up more later this week.



EDIT:

Oh! Forgot to mention that I got my gloves in! Ended up going with a different pair than initially planned and I really love the look. Just need to weather, hide the logos, and actually attach the hand plates.

It's been a bit but I'm still at it! Got my base colors down. Just need some cleanup in a few spots, detail painting, and weathering

Got the chipping portion of the weathering done last night. I added it via brush instead of my usual latex masking, so tried something new. Not sure how I feel about it yet, but ill continue with the airbrushing and washes next and see how I feel about the outcome.

The newest mando episdoe had me so pumped that I banged out (almost) the rest of the paint! Weathering all done! Just needs the orange killstripes.
