External Audio Pickup (please help!)
« on: Oct 02, 2020, 03:32 AM »
Hi there! This is a distress call. I recently installed electronics in my helmet. I installed fans and a velleman super stereo ear kit. I’ve soldered and mounted the kit in my bucket but the problem is I’m picking up the noise from my fans. It’s a loud droning buzz and it’s unbearable. It’s not the vibration of the fan it self but the rotation of the blade that’s being picked up. Is there any way I can muffle the sound generated by the fans in my helmet? If I created a box around the body of the fan would it help? Any advice at all would help.

i am dealing with the same issues with fan noise. I got some sorbothane pads coming thap I plan to use as an sound insulations. I'll let you know how it goes.

Currently layering the mic with EVA foam, it only partially block the fan noise.

second advise is to get ball bearing fans, they will make less noise and vibrations.

Unfortunately that's the trade-off with fans and any mic in your helmet, both external pick up and voice amp. There's no way to get rid of the fan noise. Your best option is to move the fans as far away from the mics as possible. Also look into quieter i.e. slower fans. The faster they spin the louder they are.

Like Vorpal said, putting the mics outside helps, and my fans are mounted above my visor, so it isn't near the mics.

im also looking into building a noise canceller using an opamp to invert a mic input near my ear, so hopefully that will removed most of the fan noise. still working out the circuit, so its only a theory at the moment

I suppose you could also try putting the airflow through tubes/hoses, and the fans could ventilate through them via chest or back rig.

That could in theory cut down the noise, without having to drill into your helmet.

I follow for the noise canceller. but i installed the external microphone as Vorpal. instead for my fans, I built a voltage regulator to adjust the speed according to need. as soon as I get back the electronic scheme, I share it with you.

Voltage regulator, good idea! I'm currently using a pwm controller to control fan speed, unfortunately it only worked for the smaller 410 fan and not the 5015
