GUESS WHO'S BACK, BABYYYYYY

Though I imagine most aren't gonna remember me, hello, Akiva back! While the last kit (Warden) stalled out, watching the Mandalorian, Clone Wars, and Rebels has reignited my fire for kit-making, and once I lose some weight we've got a fun kit in the works!

I'm not really sure what to call this kit, or the character behind it, but it's got a lot of little nods to characters and kits I love:

1. Pauldron inspired by Rex!
2. Live-action Bo-Katan inspired thigh plates.
3. Largely pure beskar color inspired by Din Djarin, with red accents.

The cape is likely going to be attached to the larger pauldron, maybe so it can be swapped out if I want to change the look. Weapons will be a blaster, vibroblade dagger, and a flamethrower gauntlet. Not sure what I'll put on the pouches or the ankle strap-style bandolier yet because I just drew this up yesterday for the most part.

The Balekicker returns, third kit's the charm!

Thanks! I'll be bringing my helmet to my bandmate's house on Weds when we have practice since he builds pedals and audio electronics, he's gonna help me figure out a way to hear people clearly and speak clearly myself through the bucket!

I made some updates, since I've decided I want to go Force Hunter with this kit. Still haven't named the character yet, but here's a full turnaround, albeit not fully colored. Gonna stick with black, various shades of dark red, and gray. Anything white just hasn't been colored yet because I'm still deciding lol.

My idea is that the backplate will have two grips with magnets in them that the force pike can be attached to, and I'm planning to use a thick velvet for the cape and kama since it looks close to the 'blaster-resistant' fabric seen in one of Padme's outfits from a prequel-era visual dictionary! The cape is also attached to the pauldron, which will probably be adhered to the collar plate with magnets so it can come off. Still debating making the chest plate all one piece with recessed areas akin to Post-Imp armor. So many choices!!

As it stands I think there might be too much gray, so I might throw in some charcoal here and there, IDK yet. I probably won't start physical construction for a few months at LEAST, but I might have some electronic answers on Weds!

Thanks! No physical updates to report except that I took my old NME bucket to my guitarist's house so we could look at it after practice, and he thinks he has a good idea of how to wire up a system that'll let me hear people clearly through the helmet, as well as speak clearly and keep the mic on a switch so if I say naughty words after stubbing my toe nobody hears :P He's looking at using an Adafruit super tiny amp trinket that's like.. the size of a quarter. Once we get this figured out, I've told him he needs to make a step-by-step tutorial for all us bucketed folks, 'cause it'd be super handy!!

No other updates besides that, since my big focus right now is weight loss/getting in better shape (and thus I don't want to make things that won't fit later) as well as stuff that just has to take priority over costuming for a little bit. I've also found I'll have to replace the visor since having my helmet in a closet next to a window caused said visor to warp and no longer fit.

Can you cut a welding visor with a dremel? If so, what sort of cutting tip is recommended, and are visor tints worth it? Thought it'd be kinda neat to put a silver or red tint on this, or maybe a mirrored tint of some kind, but IDK if those are worth the time/money/effort. Seen a couple folks with 'em and they look super neat, though!

Great concept!

If your visor is the thin flexible type then you can cut it with scissors or an exacto.  If it's the rigid type then yes you can cut it with a dremel, I used a reinforced cutting wheel for mine.

I hit mine with a utility knife and then used the flex-snap method to finish it off.

If you’re going to use a tinted film, you’ll probably want to use a clear visor (or at least not a shade 5 welding visor). If you put a dark film over a dark visor, you aren’t going to be able to see. There’s a vendor in the supply section that specifically sells tinted visors. Unless you have a friend in an auto shop to give you spare tint scraps, it might be cheaper than buying a whole roll of film for just one visor.

Hey everyone! No real updates as of yet- got a lot on my plate that requires funds, plus the plans to launch a business later in spring. I do still want to make this kit and intend to, unfortunately I have no actual updates except that I hit my first weight loss goal! Which means I'm that much closer to buying a dress form to fit everything on!

Appreciate all the feedback and support so far!

Long time no see y'all, only been 2 years and 2 more seasons of The Mandalorian and 2 years of me remembering then forgetting to get back into this. BUT THIS TIME I'M DOING IT. I actually realized I have a faux leather jacket I thrifted that has some perfect pieces to put on a flight suit. So I wanna start making the soft parts, and see just how much I can harvest from thrifted items. Still sticking with the Force Hunter concept, may play around with paint options still. I also have yet to name this character but all things in time.

Feels good to be building excitement over a kit again, and I can't wait to see how much more I can accomplish with the things I've learned over the years!

UPDATE: To avoid double-posting, I'll update here with the new ideas/adjustments and a pic (or a few)!

This is the color scheme I'm presently working with, but I have some variations as well that I'm still considering. Changed the era from Modern to Post-Imperial, with modified Bo Katan/Night Owl chest-plates (hopefully modified enough). I am also making my own life much harder in going for a Chiss, and shockingly, one -can- find red mesh scleras in prescription! Still planning to have a flamethrower gauntlet, crush gaunt, force pike, and vibroblade (x2 now, one in the boot and one on the back).

Also adding in half-thermal detonators, and swapping a blaster out for a slugthrower- likely the Scattergun. Also incorporated jet boots and toe spikes. Crush gaunt also incorporates a data pad (disguised phone case), and a shield 'projector' (might get rid of this, but it seems like an interesting idea at present). I haven't weathered the soft parts on these pics but they'd definitely be weathered similarly.

Alternate color schemes I'm considering:

Still leaning toward the earthy colors for the contrast of blue skin and red eyes. LMK thoughts/suggestions!

My two cents, if you're gonna do a chiss, doing fingerless gloves and or short sleeves would be neat to emphasize the alien look.(idk if short sleeve is allowed for post imperial right now, so possibly disregard that)
But I do like the earth tone color scheme, even if I'm a sucker for purple mandos.

Fingerless gloves is a good idea! I was honestly leaning more toward it being a sort of 'secret' until I take my helmet off, but having a hint that there's something non-human under the bucket with fingers also feels pretty neat- and isn't much more body-painting to do LOL

I've done a lot of beginning research into body paints, contacts, and gloves/boots that could potentially work and I've definitely found some good options. I think my first order of business is going to be patterning the flightsuit (which I intend to be two pieces that can connect at the waist but still separate easily for trips to the little Mando's room) and flak vest.

Is it acceptable to have part of the flak vest showing under the girth belt? (It's the green triangle, I was gonna make the vest with a pointed shape). Also do all the plates meet acceptable criteria for Post-Imp?

Unfortunately no, no part of the flak vest can show under the belt items.
If you're going post imperial you can make a custom cumberbund that bridges the gap between bottom of vest and belts and it can extend a short distance under(on dins beskar armor, the blue/grey padded leather thingy in the front)

Aaah, that's right. Well, I may toy with a cummerbund, but I can also just adjust the design of the flak vest. I know regardless I will have means of attaching top to pants, and flight suit to something so that everything stays connected and has minimal movement when raising arms or anything.

Today I'm gonna try and get some rough patterning done for said flightsuit pieces! I have some tailors chalk and pattern paper coming in from Amazon, and I've sourced a lot of good boot and glove options as well. Likely going to be dyeing my fabric to get the precise shades I want, so I've also been on RIT's website to see what all I need there. Excited!!

Technically a double post I know, but we've got UPDATES! I spent some time yesterday after work and the bulk of today drafting my pattern pieces for the flightsuit and flak vest. The ideas are thusly:

1. Flightsuit Top: I used a slightly loose-fitting t-shirt as the base, with the idea that it can open in the front and serve as a casual jacket type piece as well (the idea of a modular/varied use kit is definitely one I pulled from Ivven). I used a slightly slimmer-fitting long sleeve shirt to pattern the under-sleeve, with the addition of thumbholes (so that the sleeves don't bunch under my gauntlets). There is also a raised collar portion that will have snaps (disguised in some way if needed) to give some variety to the neckline. The idea is to have four small loops with sturdy snaps attached at the front and back of the top, that can loop around horizontal belt loops on the pants so that the top doesn't ride up.
2. Flightsuit Pants: I used a pair of jeans that fit me decently and traced around them (most of these pieces I traced because I don't want to destroy them), modify the waist, hips, etc. to be a little more slim-fitting but not tight. I tapered them at the calves so I could tuck them into boots and have less bulk. I haven't decided on whether I want to do an elastic waistband as a closure (since it'll be hidden under belts and things), or if I want to try something a little more ambitious, again in the event that I want to wear these as part of a casual/partial kit.
3. Flak Vest: I did destroy something for this, which was a thrifted moto jacket. It was going to be destroyed anyway as it has some cool quilting I want to paint over and use as reinforced padding on the elbows and knees of the flightsuit. I also liked the princess seams on the front and back and wanted to make my life easier so I traced them after tearing the jacket apart. It lived a good life.
4. Neck Seal: I wanted to have a separate neck seal, and try something beyond a balaclava this time (as I'd like this character to have a visible braid where she can tie in her trophies such as kyber crystals and silka beads). The idea is to use some of the quilted-type motifs from the moto jacket on the neck portion, and have it attached to a wider gorget for support underneath the flightsuit. I will also be attaching neck armor to the seal, likely via velcro.

Pictures' worth a thousand words though, but given it's all beige muslin on gray table, I thought the explanations might also be handy LOL

^ Drafting the front of the flightsuit, short oversleeve, and collar.

^Putting all the pattern pieces on my muslin. I bought 4 yards of 90", which turns out to be a LOT more than I needed. But I'll take it, in case I make some glaring errors.

^Finally, all the pieces cut out and ready to be sewn together. I am very glad I have a proper dress form these days, as it will make fitting and finding problems much simpler than trying it on me and awkwardly stabbing myself with pins.

EDIT:

I may have changed my color scheme again. I was looking at what I'd drawn up and felt more drawn to the purple but it was still a little too.. light. So I went back in and toyed with some things and I -really- like this one. The bright red visor seems like a fun tease of having bright red eyes underneath, and I wanted to do something a little more colorful (she says, with incredibly dark and desaturated colors. Can take the Mando out of the goth, but can't take the goth outta the Mando..)

I've been working on pattern modifications after work for a few days, and while I don't have any updated pictures yet, it's because I've been redesigning and changing directions a lot- I blame the ADHD lol. That being said, I think I have something I'm finally happy with! I had to add more armor pieces to make it approvable for Brigade, and I also redid the soft parts so they look more in-universe even out of armor.

I didn't include all my accessories/weapons/toys on these sketches just for ease of brainpower. I really like colorblocked looks, and PI seems to have a decent bit of visible topstitching I really wanna try my hand at. Below is with the flak vest over the flight suit.

The flak vest doesn't need much in the way of modification, and I'm thinking of using laces to close it in the back. Now the flight suit.. the top I'll have to repattern entirely but the base pieces I have should give me something solid to work from. Same with the pants- I drafted a pattern based on my measurements that works really well, so being able to make split-leg pants shouldn't be -too- hard (she says)...

But hopefully I can make more progress on this this weekend, and maybe start getting my armor pieces drafted in paper! Then ordering some fabric swatches (I'm thinking a mix of stretch broadcloth and duck cloth for the flight suit, plus pleather for the reinforced bits, then the flak vest out of duck cloth).

Really enjoying the evolution of your colour scheme! I do like the blues/purples, and the hint of red in the visor is a great idea.

For the fingerless gloves, instead of painting your fingers blue and then trying not to rub the paint off just getting into your kit, I'd recommend blue gloves underneath (possibly even built into your fingerless gloves for ease of suiting up). You can make them from nylons if you find (or dye) the right colour, and with the addition of some press-on nails (and possibly airbrush shading?) to make them look more realistic, they will help keep you from smearing blue all over everything you touch.

It's been ups and downs folks! Pics incoming but suffice to say I found three or four ways to make the same mistakes! I've made two muslins of the jacket top, as well as a first 'final' and now our current 'final'. Explanations below! I was originally going to do princess seams and such but ultimately simplified to what I have now, if I need to add darts to tailor it then I can! Once this is sorted, I'll get to work on the pants.

Front and back of the first jacket attempt- the general fit seems correct here, but the pieces are too small as they lack stretch entirely. But the shapes were looking on the right track even if I ended up getting rid of the princess seams and back seams.

Topstitching work in progress, and the final topstitching on the updated jacket fit. I ended up taking a non-stretch jacket I liked that had the fit and flexibility I was looking for, and using that to trace a pattern. Can also see the better fit and sizing of this jacket.

And finally for now, the reinforced pleather bits for the elbows and knees- I decided to make these teal, as I've changed my flak vest to teal as well to match the paint color on my armor more closely (ideally). The left pic is original black and the first coat, second pic is first coat and second coat. I used Angelus leather paint and mixed blue and popsicle green to get a good shade of teal!

More progress finally! In between furious bouts of leveling through Final Fantasy XIV in prep for FanFest, I get back to this lol. The jacket is nearly done! Just needs closures, hemming, lining!

Flat sleeve layout. They're a little wonky and things definitely aren't perfect but unless you know what to look for it's hopefully hard enough to pinpoint.

Sleeve detail topstitching. I had to switch back to usual thread because my topstitching thread was too heavy for the broadcloth. Or at least I think that's what the issue was, but this still seems to work!

Close up of the elbow patches- again not perfectly situated but I can be happy with it. The color is more teal than blue in person, and it matches my flak vest fabric pretty well! (I'll be griming and weathering everything once it's done so I can figure out the story of said weathering.)

And finally, where we left things today! I tailored the sleeves a bit more which messed up some of my topstitching pattern, but here you can see the general look once I attach closures!

See everyone next week!

Just kidding, I forgot I could work on stuff today! Jacket is lined (sans hemming and tacking), just needs pressing, closures and finishes and it'll be done! I'm really pleased with how this is turning out!

So this summer got busy and this got set off to the side for a hot minute, but we're back...

And starting all over LOL

Letting the jacket sit, I realized I wasn't happy with the quality of it, and I felt like the design could be better, and the build as well. So I went back to the drawing board, and here's what we've got now!

The new design for the jacket, intended to be closed with magnets. Topstitching design is also changing a lot from what's here, because I've convinced myself less is more LOL

Front and back pieces sewn together at the shoulders.

And the new topstitching plans. I did in fact cut out entirely new pieces from the duck cloth for this, and thankfully had just enough! Now if only cutting and pinning could become magically more enjoyable lol...
