Designing my kit, opinions and advice appreciated
« on: Jan 03, 2021, 10:27 PM »
I started with the "Mando Creator" and have settled on this setup for the moment.  I have been printing out sheets and coloring them in without a lot of success, however this one I am actually liking how it is looking.  I want to make a post-Imperial kit, as represented here.  I like the color palette and I like how it is filling in so far, however I'm just not sure what paint scheme I want to go with for the actual armor plates.  The one thing I don't like about the armor is the pauldrons as they make the shoulders seem bulkier than I wanted and I may switch to the "Classic" style instead.

Heh there must be something in the air, I chose similar colors for mine.

I love this pallette. You could go so many directions.

My method began with creating an in world back story for where my Mando came from, where his clan ended up post fall of Mandalore and remain during post imperial times. That helped a bunch.

Then used Mando creator to see what the different combos looked like. What kind of skills do you want your mando to utilize, do they have a weapon or fighting style they specialize in? Is there maybe something you'd want to implement that you haven't quite seen but can fall within guidelines (this is ongoing for me too because one of my gauntlets will be unique)

I went with a deep purple (darker than what is represented in my render) because my guy is a hunter of the night. His name is literally I'm a Hunter, I sing my song to the night sky. So I wanted a dark color that wasn't black, blue was considered but it's represented a lot and purple is my personal favorite color. Then for the secondary I initially stated with a seafoam but that quickly turned to a copper that as it weathers patinas into a seafoam/teal. The copper worked because I was implementing elements of Fyrnock's and their eyes are yellow/orangish. That was how I got to my mock up.

Do you have a favorite color from that pallette? Start with it as your main and play around with the tone of it. I found that every color ended up a different tone or shade than I initially started with but the color itself was the same, if that makes sense.

Sorry for the long reply thought maybe explaining my method would be helpful 😁

Thanks, I love this color pallette as well!  I started with colors I like (maroon and grey) and then added others in till I got a combo I really liked.

I will work on a backstory as I work on my armor.  I'm not going to go super-indepth with it, as I don't intend to write any stories involving my MERC persona, but I will come up with something as I go along.

I'm considering going for Gunslinger or Pistoleer down the road, so my Mando would probably be some sort of small-arms expert or something along those lines.

My favorite color from my selected palette is the maroon, and I am planning on making my soft-parts mostly out of that color.  I want to paint the armor with some sort of pattern, but what pattern and which accenting color I haven't settled on yet.

And here's an updated concept:

Is there a specific format we have to use when planning our costumes or can I design mine using my graphics tablet?? I’m a part time graphic designer

Nope, I used the creator for ease. Whatever helps you see your vision my friend. 😎

No there is no specific format you have to use.  The Mando Creator and the Mando Maker are just two common ways for folks to get started.

Thank you so much!  And lol, I've been marathoning Clone Wars as well.

I used a sketchbook and coloured pencils.

I can't draw very well, so I used Mando Creator to get the rough setup I want and then printed a blank copy to color in with colored pencils, lol.

I've got a concept finalized!  I removed the purple from the color palette and it ended up looking much better.

For weaponry built into the armor kit I am planning on knee-plate blasters, dorsal hand-plate darts, flame projector (right gauntlet), whistling birds (left gauntlet), and if approvable I'd love a small helmet blaster on the left ear cup.

I would like to eventually go for a Brigade approval as a Gunslinger, so while my basic kit will be much simpler than the following list, below is what I've come up with as a goal.

2x DC-17 blasters in shoulder holsters (will do this after basic kit approval)
2x Westar-35 blasters in drop-leg holsters (will do this for basic kit)
1x Verpine Shatter Gun carbine with shoulder sling (will do this after basic kit approval.  Wanted a slug thrower shotgun, but I couldn't find anyone making one.)
1x Vibroblade (may do this for basic kit, but for sure as part of the Gunslinger app)
1x Thermal Detonator (will do this after basic kit approval)
1x Kobold Droid Caller (will do this after basic kit approval)
1x Marksman-H Combat Remote (will do this after basic kit approval)
1x Bounty Puck
1x Tracker Fob
1x Droid Restraining Bolt
