Ralph McQuarrie concept art style Backpack Build
« on: May 22, 2020, 09:06 AM »
Hello everyone!

My main Mando build is practically complete, so it's time to start accessorising. I didn't feel like doing a jetpack, but I did want something with an 'in universe's origin, so I decided to build this backpack

I really enjoy the design and I thought it would match my new helmet

So I started doing quite a bit of thinking, and decided to go for a 'hybrid build' ; both scratch build Sintra parts, and 3d printed parts(which I all designed and printed myself). Next, I decided to split the backpack in 2 main parts. The 'box' and the 'tube'

They fit perfectly together due to the custom 3d printed brackets.
Some of the 3d printed greeblies have already been put on, they just need a small amount of bodywork.
I did quite a bit of designing and printing already. Here's what's printed to far

There's more stuff printing as I write this

The colours of the backpack will be different from the concept art version. it will match my Mando's colours (Black, grey and Turquoise). I will also make it a bit more weathered. I've done a detailed schematic on what will me printed vs scratch build, I might share that with you.

I'm not 100% sure about the attachment method yet, but I might do side release buckles.

That's all I've got so far, I will update as more stuff is done!

-Bob

Thanks! I've actually made a bit of progress.
The basic shape is basically there, except for the pipe piece at the bottom. I will be going to the hardware store to pick up some PVC pipe to build off of.
Still figuring out the colour scheme, I'll mock up some designs soon.

I had the day off so I finished the Tube part. Only thing left to do is a bit of weathering, which I'll do once the pack is complete.

Did the first pre-assembly today!

Still to do:
-figure out a strapping system
-assemble all the parts together permanently (I'm missing some nuts and bolts at the moment)
-maybe a bit more weathering

All and all, really pleased with the results so far

It's finished!

The strapping system remains to be done, I'll get going on that once I have a new backplate for my mando
