Kainrath's Helmet WIP
« on: Apr 23, 2021, 11:06 AM »
Finally getting around to posting some of the work I've been doing on my helmet....

Trying out some ideas for the inside and figuring out the padding....

I've also been playing around with some greeblie ideas using, among other things, legos....

Which would eventually look something like this....

Is this way off base? Too much?

In my opinion it's awesome. Some pieces may be too recognizable as LEGOs though.  :cookie:

I've got them painted now and that goes a long way to loosing the "lego" look, but yes, that is a fear of mine as well. After painting them, I'm going to "gunk" them up a bit as well, and I think that will make all the difference

Definitely!
Here are the pieces primed and with a coat of hammered silver paint (i think it's actually called "antique pewter"). In retrospect, I think a coat or two of filler primer would have done a better job of filling in the gaps where the legos join. As it is I'll have to do that by hand when I "gunk it up" using acrylic paint.

I also have to say, I had an absolute blast sitting in front of a pile of legos and trying to come up with cool designs. I guess it was tapping into a childhood joy.  :D
Please do share what you come up with!

If I end up making something, you'll be the first to critique it!

I'm impressed with how well just one coat of paint takes it away from a Lego look, these are really cool greeblies! I may have to dig through my ancient Mega Bloks and see what can be found...

Indeed! It's amazing when you start looking at things through a "greeblie lens" what can be repurposed for use!

I wonder if a broken cord encasing would work? (The braided / woven cords I mean.)

I imagine so -- I've seen some neat cords used as fuel lines etc, and with the electronics and tech used in armor, there's plenty of reasons to use cords as greeblies!

Haha, yes!
Sadly, it's only the undercoat  :o  (some of it will still be visible though)

Toothpaste!
