The Peachtree Mando Kit WIP - APPROVED
« on: Apr 28, 2021, 03:20 AM »
Hey everyone! I have wanted to join a Star Wars costuming club for years, but have always been too intimidated to try. After making too many excuses and waiting too long, I finally decided to take the gundark by the ears and give it a shot! I've been slowly working on my Mando kit over the course of the last year or so with the help of the Naast Facebook group, but I've been delaying getting my WIP started and updated, so here goes! I know that some threads tend to be more detailed than others here, so be prepared for a pic heavy thread! Over sharing is always better in my opinion, just to make sure I'm on the right track. And if I am, hopefully someone else can learn from my journey! Let's get right into it.

The Design
As I posted in my concept thread, I wanted to create a color palette that was unique yet significant. So, being in the Peach State, I chose to go with a Peachtree inspired color scheme. Here's my updated concept:

For those of you who are interested in my original concept thread that has my old concept design renders, here it is: https://mandalorianmercs.org/forum/index.php?topic=193255.msg2148919#msg2148919

The Helmet (COMPLETE)
After asking around, the overwhelming majority recommended I start with the helmet. I ordered a Mando blank from Lonewolf Customs and washed it upon its (extremely quick) delivery.

The next thing to do was to glue on the ear caps. I sanded down the flashing and then used Gorilla Glue Gel to attach them.

Then of course, I had to try it on!

Note: I know it fits a bit wide on me here, but my head barely fits inside. I consulted a Russ'alor on this, and my solution will be to make a Jango/Deathwatch style flak vest with the shoulders sticking out a bit more to compensate.

Next, I used spot putty to fill in the gap between the ear cap and the helmet, then sanded it down even.

Then I sanded down the remaining flashing and gave the whole thing a light surface sand. Washed it, let it dry, and then it was on to painting! I started with a base coat of silver.

After that dried, I applied my first layer of masking fluid (I used liquid latex), and let dry. The next coat is a smoke gray.

Added more masking fluid, then on to the espresso brown.

Then, it's time to peel the masking fluid off! I've officially decided that this is my absolute favorite part of the process. Here's the reveal:

Note: on the image directly above, I used steel wool to get those little bits of paint and masking fluid up that look like they're starting to peel later on in the process.

Next up was the cheeks! In my design concept, the cheek color was intended to be a sandstone color, but I ended up accidentally discovering this brick color that I thought worked much better, so I went with that! Here's how it came out:

Now,  on to the color I was most excited to see on the bucket, the peach! When putting the first coats on, I got a little too impatient (it's a very pale peach) and sprayed too much on the first coat. That, coupled with the humidity (this part of the process was done last August) made the whole thing peel. And not just the regular orange peel. This thing peeled in sheets. Here's the carnage:

This was super discouraging at the time, as I hadn't seen anything peel like that before. But, I learned what to avoid doing, so that's the important part. Nothing a little sanding can't correct, so I started sanding it down.

What was cool about this was that even after sanding, there were some ridges that I couldn't quite get all the way even, so I ended up keeping those, and they ended up looking really cool in my weathering process later on! But we'll get to that later. Once I finished sanding the peeled paint down, I started repainting the peach. This time, in lighter coats.

After several more coats, the peach was nice and even with no peeling. Then I peeled my masking fluid off and dry fitted a t-visor in to see how I was progressing.

The last step was the topical weathering! I used brown and black acrylic paint washes, along with charcoal to achieve the desired look. Once the weathering was to my liking, I sealed it and installed the t-visor (I used a welding face mask for mine). Here's the finished product!

I also got some pads for the inside:

It fits like a glove and doesn't wobble at all, I'm super happy with how it came out, especially for my first stab at a helmet like this.

Flight Suit (COMPLETE)
Now that I have a helmet that can sit on a shelf and constantly motivate me to finish my kit, the next step everyone I spoke with recommended was to get my soft goods dialed in. First up, the flight suit! I got a pair of khaki coveralls (I'll get these recolored later on to match the colors in the concept image) for my base, here's what they looked like when they came in the mail:

After getting some help bringing it in, this is what it looked like after the first round (pockets still attached):

Still a bit too baggy at this point, I got more help bringing it in even further, and this is where we ended up after I removed the pockets:

I then weathered the suit (see last page for reference images).

I've got some more progress pics to share, but I figured I'd break it up some as my first post is super long. Next up, the gauntlets!

Gauntlets (COMPLETE)
I bought a pair of used April Storm gauntlets from Omega, and they were a perfect fit. The darts and blaster tips were all broken off, and I needed to repaint them to match my color scheme. Here's what they looked like during the sanding process. The one on the right is what they looked like before, the one on the left is fully sanded:

I then used filler primer and primed both gauntlets. From here on out though, for the sake of thread length, I'll show a detailed look at the process for one gauntlet, then show the finished product of the second. That being said, after the filler primer dried I used more spot putty to smooth over some problem areas, then sanded the gauntlet down.

Ready for paint, I used the same paint layering process as the helmet, so here's what the first gauntlet looked like after the last coats of paint were applied and the masking fluid was peeled away:

Then it was on to painting the buttons and weathering! I used the same method as the helmet to keep consistency, and here's where I ended up:

Got the darts and blaster tips roughly sanded enough for a dry fit! The gauntlet on the left is obviously not finished in terms of weathering, but it's looking good so far!

I also have the padding for the inside of the gauntlets, I got some sponge neoprene with an adhesive backing that should work really well.

Update: 6/5/21

Got the second gauntlet weathered, and I finished sanding, priming painting, and weathering the blaster tips and darts! I attached everything, and this is what we're looking like now.

Then all I had to do was seal them and add the padding on the inside:

Gauntlets finished!!

Looking good dude. Great progress.
Probably one of the most in depth WIP threads I've seen.
Keep on it. Dragoncon is coming. Maybe we can help get you approved and official by then?

That’s the goal, sir! Trying to make a big push to be ready for the next AP so I can get help shaping the armor plates. Lots to do by then, I’ve been struggling with a flak vest, but I’ll get it done.

Thanks Fenn! I was really surprised that most of the feedback I got on this was that the color scheme was really unique. I'm glad it's a bit out of the ordinary, but really happy that the response has been positive on it.

Very welcome and it's true. Personal opinion here but Mandos look their absolute best when we as makers stick with more earth toned color schemes and I think yours will look great when completed.

I am also slightly biased to any Mando that has a western ish, gun slinger type vibe and I think that aesthetic would look great with your kit.

The Flak Vest  (COMPLETE)
I'm gonna level with everyone here; I've been dreading tackling the soft parts on this kit. I'm much more experienced in armor construction, and I absolutely cannot wait to finish this part so I can finally get working on the rest of the armor. As always, any constructive criticism would be more than welcome, especially on this part. Let's get into it:

I started by drafting a pattern form an old t-shirt, and this is what I came up with (front, back, and shoulder bells):

Took several drafts and dry fits to get it fitted right, but I think it's right where it needs to be. Next step was to trace onto the fabric! The vest will be made from duck canvas (the brown material), with a quilting cotton (the beige material) for the lining. The colors will be modified slightly before it's finished, so just know that this isn't what this will look like in the end. Here are the patterns traced out:

I got some help with the sewing, and got it put together enough for a dry fit (sans side closures and shoulder bells). Here's the fit:

With the shoulder bells and side closures finished, we ended up looking like this:

In these pictures, the neckline is WAY too low to put the collar armor on, but I have a plan to correct this with the neck seal.

NOTE: when this was initially finished in July of 2021, the fit was also a bit baggy without the flight suit on under it. I have adjusted and tried test fits at an AP and the fit is MUCH better. Please see subsequent replies for a more updated look.

I also weathered the vest (see last page for reference).

Armor (COMPLETE)

Finally, we have Beskar!!! Got my armor plates printed by Bade Dunn, a fellow Naastie, and it's all finally here in the mail! Here's what I'm starting with:

I then sanded the plates down, starting with 120 grit to knock down the lines a good bit, then ratcheting up to 220, then 320 before applying the filler primer. Then finished off with 400 grit, and then painted! See final page for finished armor.

Thank you!! The weather here has been really humid and rainy so no luck in getting any filler primer on them yet, but hopefully later this week it'll clear up and I'll be able to get some progress in. The prints are pretty clean, so there shouldn't bee too much work to do.

About the fit of your vest- you might want to add a couple of darts in the back, parallel to your spine. T-shirts are tubes, while human torsos are cones. If you leave it loose, the added weight of armor might pull it away from your body.

Yeah, we gotta do something about this thing. Tried putting armor plate templates on there and it's just not the right cut right now. I may have to completely redo it. I'll keep this thing posted until I figure it out. Darts may do the trick, thanks for the tip!

The Cape (COMPLETE)

So in an effort to expedite the build and approval process, I won't be doing a back plate (at first anyways). So here comes the cape! Been looking forward to this part. I got some material from a craft store in an off-white color. I believe it's duck canvas, but it's not as thick as the material I used for the flak vest.

Now to the dye! Here's a little before and after action.

UPDATE 9/21/21

After trimming and test fitting, I wasn't happy with neither the material I initially chose nor the color I had dyed it. The material was too thin and didn't drape in a way I was satisfied with, and the color was too robust for my liking (I wanted it to look a bit more sun bleached since my Mando has a desert vibe). So, back to the drawing board! I ended up getting some duck canvas from Joann and started over with that.

Then I chose a new, lighter color to hopefully get the material to look more faded. Here was the result of the first dye bath:

Okay, so that was too faded. Took it back to the bath and dyed it a second time.

That's more like it. With some weathering that'll look much more like my original design concept. I then trimmed the material and hemmed the edges. I also sewed rare earth magnets into the ends where the cape will attach to the collar plate. Here's how we're looking:

After a bit of weathering, I'd say this thing's good to go.

The Westar 35 - COMPLETE

Maybe a basic choice, but for my sidearm, I chose the standard Westar 35. Wanted to keep with the Deathwatch influence for my character's backstory. Got this one printed for me by another Naastie (thanks vod!), and it came out beautifully. Here's what we're starting with:

I've already sanded down the print, then put a wet coat of filler primer on it. Once that first wet coat dried, I wet sanded the whole thing with 400 grit sandpaper. I repeated the process, and it's feeling really smooth! Just gotta do a little spot putty work here and there, then we should be ready for the base coats of paint!

Update time!
Finished the spot putty work and wet sanded the whole thing again. I got too excited to get to work on it when I first got it that I forgot to take enough WIP pictures, so I made sure to add a few more angles for this step  This is what I ended up with:

First coat of paint is on! We silver now  :8):

The second coat is a nice gunmetal gray:

And to finish off the base coats, some espresso brown on the grip:

Finished off with some weathering! I also added some scorch marks on the tip that I'm pretty happy with. Here's the finished prop!

The Westar 35

Maybe a basic choice, but for my sidearm, I chose the standard Westar 35. Wanted to keep with the Deathwatch influence for my character's backstory. Listen, if it's good enough for Lady Bo-Katan, it's good enough for me!

What's Next: spot putty work, then one final sand before applying the base coat. Then on to painting and weathering! More to come soon...

Blaster is looking good. 3D prints are great but they are a lot of work to fill and smooth it seems ha.

How is your character going to be tied to the deathwatch? Going to add some symbols associated with them to your kit or has he "cut ties" with them?

Blaster is looking good. 3D prints are great but they are a lot of work to fill and smooth it seems ha.

How is your character going to be tied to the deathwatch? Going to add some symbols associated with them to your kit or has he "cut ties" with them?

So he was a zealous member of the Watch, but he's cut ties with Deathwatch after Maul's coup and the Siege of Mandalore. The idea is that he's kind of a drifter like Din, but more specifically during the first days of the Empire. I'd like to eventually do a second kit for this character in the Post-Imperial style to show some evolution. But this is the start!

Right on. Lone gunslinger vibe. I dig it.

Personally -  I would suggest keeping the traditional style chest plates but perhaps incorporation a full shoulder pauldron and shin plate(s) or thigh plates with some shin bandoleers or something to evolve the kit (I'm a Mando traditionalist though so I'm biased towards the very non-Mando looking armor from the TV series, at least in my opinion lol)
